DVT with intravenous AB

On Friday, I had a PICC line inserted into my right arm to administer Ceftazidime ABs every 24 hours by Hospital at Home nurses. My hand hurt from the moment the line was inserted and by Tuesday, I was experiencing numbness and pins and needles.

Long story short, I had an ultrasound and a four inch blood clot has been found extending into my neck and I'm now on Apixaban blood thinning medication for the next three months.

My question is - why have they left the 'dead' line in my arm (I do now have a cannula in my other arm to continue the Ceftazidime treatment)? The line is causing extreme pain, but 'has' to remain for 3-5 days. Why? I feel as though I'm going to lose the use of my hand at this rate.

I'm so sorry to hear of your experience. I'm afraid that's probably a question for the medics.

I can't answer your query Poirett but after my hip op in September I had a canula put into my wrist which was really painful and everytime they put something in I was in agony so can sympathise with what you went through. The next day I begged the nurse to take it out which luckily she did. My wrist was sore and bruised for almost two weeks, my vein has now disappeared which is very strange. I wonder if the line was inserted wrongly and that was why it was painful, perhaps ask your nurse to see why you have to wait so long to have it removed or give the helpline a ring 0300 222 5800 x
