Bronch w/ stomach acid?

You know the feeling of having bronchiectasis and at the same time like you have lots of stomach acid? I mean I was bearing the pain in my chest, back, in the lower ribs and sometimes in throat. My doctor said that the cause of those pains sometimes is the acid that goes up from my stomach. At the same time, I was worrying if again, I have an infection bcos of back pains, chest, etc. Etc. I am so overthinking and I don't really know how to navigate or to know what was really the cause of all those pains. Sharing this coz don't what to do. 🙂 Thank you.

Hi iamgg. I don’t know much about the management of bronchiectasis I’m afraid, so I do know a bit about stomach acid so maybe I can say something useful.

Did the GP give you any medication for it? I’m thinking of a ppi such as Lanzoprozole. I take one (two a day in a flare) but unlike most people I take mine at night as recommended by my ENT consultant as this is when I get most pain and there were signs of reflux at the back of my throat. On top of this I use Gaviscon Double Action on an as needed basis.

Apart from medication I watch what I eat. Spicy foods are a no no for me. I love curry but my stomach does not so it is not worth the pain. I also find I can’t eat oranges anymore. I restrict my fizzy drinks, don’t eat too much in one go and I don’t eat (or drink anything except water) for at least two hours before bed. It all sounds a bit of a chore but I quickly got into the routine.

Start with trying to draw a link between the foods you eat and your symptoms. A bit of trial and error but if you are consciously aware you’ll find your own list of things to avoid. Once you start managing your diet you will very quickly see the benefits .

Hope this helps for now. I am sure there will be someone who can offer you more specific advice related to reflux and your condition but maybe this is a starting point for you.

Yes, my gp gave me sorts of medicine for stomach acid but I didnt take it for now because she also given me prescription of antibiotics for my cough and chest ache because maybe I am having chest infection or stomach acid? Not sure but for now, I will finish my antibiotic and if the pain won't go away and my stomach isnt good again, I will buy medicines for stomach acid.

Thank you for giving me tips. As much as possible, I do not take soft drinks, coffee and spicy foods which are the main reasons of stomach acid. It helps somehow.

I'm a bit surprised your doctor didn't prescribe Lansoprazole or something similar.. If the pain persists you'll have to go back. This needs sorting.

My doctor prescribed me meds for stomach acid and at the same time given me antibiotics for my cough. For now, I feel that my back and chest ache is somehow gone, thats why I'm confused if it is due to my stomach acid or chest infection 😅 for now, I am taking antibiotics and let me finish it because I don't know what will happen if I take the two at the same time.😅

Really? I also notice when I had bronchiectasis, my stomach produces a lot of acid and its not good. I just knew now that they were somehow related.

Sometimes I don't know what was really the reason why my chest or back aches, is it about my stomach acid or my bronchiectasis is getting worse. This is so hard to identify sometimes.

Yes but I have to take the antibiotics first, I am feeling well now, but if my antibiotic is already consumed but I am still suffering from chest ache, I'll take meds for stomach acid.

I have bronchiectasis and suffer from stomach acid. The pain in my back was so bad it felt like a heart attack. I used Gaviscon for a while but didnt help enough with the pain. My doctor gave me Omerprazole which has really helped and I very rarely have these pains now. I take these even when on antibiotics. I hope you find some relief x

I went into St Georges Hospital for an operation a few years ago and afterwards they asked if I had any other aches and pains. I said "no" but I did suffer with acid reflux for 40 years and they gave me Omeprazole - no problem since, taking one a day. The relief was magical!

My immunologist was concerned that my infections were caused by reflux. I was getting a bit of heartburn at the time. He told me not to eat anything for the four hours before I go to bed. It certainly helped me. I hope you feel better soon.
