hi,I’ve suffered from sciatica over many years.

I discovered by trial and error that a sports physio can reduce the sciatica pain.

The GP prescribed Amitryptline this helped me to sleep

It also relieved the *electric* pain which used to run down my legs.

I hope you get some relief from this horrid pain

Hi sorry that you are struggling. I have chronic sciatica and know how difficult it can be. However I’m not sure this is the right group for you to seek support and information. This group is predominantly for people with lung conditions and whilst some members may discuss other issues/health conditions (as I have) there is limited information here. One forum that maybe helpful to you is called Pain Concern suggest you have a look there.

surgery if specific exercises don’t work, it’s normally a disk pressing on the spinal cord so it’s useful to know which one so exercises can be targeted

I've had it many times, usually caused by a fall, or big bump that's knocked my spine or sacroiliac out of alignment. GPs (mine) only offer painkillers rather than treatment to the cause. I see a McTimoney Chiropractor to help realign and between times a therapeutic massage irons out the muscles pinching the sciatic nerve. I also do specific stretching exercises for those muscles. That was when I could afford it........

Nowadays I'm nearly 2 stone overweight & I feel it's true what they say about death by sofa. I'm stiff all over & everything hurts & feel too sorry for myself to get stretching & motivated.

😢😢😢😢That is sad to hear. I hope you can haul yourself off that sofa soon. 💐💐💐xxx

🤣, bless you Chris, I'm alright really im sure it's just temporary my house sale chain broke twice last year so I'm a bit stuck, mentally I'd left Cheltenham. I'm over in Cambridgeshire now with family so there's never a dull moment. Lovely uplifting walk through the oldest parts of Ely and cathedral grounds today was smashing in the sunshine with a just 2 year old holding my hand 🤗

That sounds better. It's sad to read that people like you and Knitter, who are so ready with encouragement and advice for other people, are feeling down. I love Ely cathedral. I know a man who was a guide there and might even have been able to fix a sneaky tour of the lantern. Alas! I couldn't get up there if given the chance now.

Have you had a mri to identify what is causing the pain? I’ve had spinal stenosis for years. Mine caused by several places in my lower spine being squeezed by bulging discs and wear and tear. I’ve had spinal injections, they work for some. In my case it stopped the shooting pain down my legs. I’ve taken codiene when the pain was really bad. I used a tens machine which helped and finally nortripyline for the nerve pain in my legs and to help me sleep through it. During this time I’ve done Pilates regularly and walked slowly as much as I could. Finally two weeks ago I had spinal decompression surgery. If I can help you with any of this let me know.

Why has it taken them so long to sort the problem?

I was with pain management for years having different injections Then of course there was Covid. Been on the waiting list for surgery for over a year. I’ve met people who have successful outcomes with the injections. The first step has to be to establish the cause of your sciatica though.

Hi I have always used osteopaths. I have used graduates from The British School as they are a bit more rigorous

Hello, I find this helps. Lay on your side on the floor if you can , if not lay on bed. Curl up by bringing your knees up as far as you can, then uncurl and stretch backwards still on your side as far as you can. I was told to do this by my sports physio.s wife when he was on holiday and I was in agony. Watch how a cat curls up and then stretches itself backwards. I do hope this works for you.

I've used both physios and osteopaths, but find that osteopathic treatment tends to be more effective. It's a good idea to choose one recommended by people you know, or an experienced registered osteopath.

I’d suggest you take a look at the Nerve Pain Drs on YouTube. There’s plenty of advice on the many videos they’ve done on treating and supplementing for nerve pain and nerve damage, including infrared light therapy, diet, supplements and treatments etc.

You could try Urgo - Electrotherapy Lumbar Belt - TENS Technology - Pain Relief . It helped my son a lot.

I was loooking into Radiofrequency Ablation (nerve burning) for my Lateral Recess Stenosis, but I'd have to have two stints of 30 to 40 minutes each, laying on my front. Decided I wouldn't handle that. Now got 6 Acupuncture appointments in April into May, hoping that works.

Hello,

I had a terrible bout of Sciatica during the pandemic. I couldn't walk but could drive !! Amitriptyline really helped and so did a couple of sessions with a private physio. Then I did a self referral to local NHS physio via Direct referral service. They triaged me via a questionnaire and gave me specific exercises to do. Getting fitter since the pandemic has really helped.

Hope you find some relief soon .

Go well,

Pauline
