Hi, I'm new this site.I've been on Rivaoxiban for about 10 years. I always get a really bad headache or a bad nosebleed, I have been told from the hospital to take it after breakfast with water. If I take it on an empty stomach I'm bad with my headaches they can last most of the day,so I take paracetamol. If I knock myself I get severe bruising.

I've copied my list of foods you can take in moderation. You need to be careful of the following foods that has vitamin K

Asparagus.

Broccoli.

Brussels sprouts.

Cauliflower.

Green onions.

Kale.

Parsley.

Spinach.

Hope this helps.

Hi Seahorse, Are you sure about the vitamin k caution? My understanding is that this is pertinent when taking warfarin-hence the regular blood checks, but with the new generation blood thinners this caution is not needed.

This too, is my understanding. I've been on Rivaroxaban for 3-4 years now. No problems whatsoever and have even taken it outside of meal times.

Hi Seahorse and welcome to the forum. Hubby and l are both on Rivaroxaban 20mg and suffer no ill effects. We can eat everything you listed too without problem. As Troilus mentions l think it’s Warfarin that causes problems with vitamin k.

Hope things improve for you. Take care xx

Hi Seahorse1a - i was on Rivaroxaban after suffering bloodclots in the lungs. After recovery I thought i was going to be taken off blood thinners but no - told to be on for life. So after discussion with consultant she has put me on Apixaban which is a bit milder (not sure if the right word!) but still bruise and bleed. I looked into the food thing too. The list of veggies are all things i love to eat and have carried on eating them. I wish doctors would tell people more about the potential side effects of drugs and what to avoid. Those veggies help with clotting apparently. Maybe it was advice with Warfarin but not with these later developed anticoagulants. Maybe a pharmacist could advise?

Hi Seahorse - Vit K does not react with Rivaroxaban which I take, it does interreact with Warfarin and I think Vit K is given as an antidote for a Warfarin bleed.
