Does anyone else take Azithromycin 3 times a week prophylactic? Just wondering if you have to take your rescue antibiotics due to chest infection, do you stop the Azithromycin?

Yes I was told to stop Azithromycin when I take other antibiotics, and restart when you finish taking the other ones.

Hi revcathfrog,

I have been taking Azithromycin 3 times a week for 7 years. Had the same question as you in the beginning. The answer was to continue taking them as well as additional antibiotics for a bacterial flare up.

I see here folk have given different responses which makes it confusing.

Perhaps ask your surgery or community pharmacist? They should give you a definitive answer.

Go well.

Thanks Pauline, problem is can't speak to GP or respiratory consultant now. I have decided to take rescue pack and keep taking Azithromycin. 🎄

Oh yes appreciate that. Hadn't realised that you are using the additional AB's right now.

Good thinking to double up with them both for the time being and get answers when everything is all back open.

Hope you feel better very soon.

Go well,

Pauline

my Respiratory consultant put me on daily Azithromycin, and told me to stop them when have flair up. I keep Ciprofloxacin 750 and Septrin Forty. At present I had to take the Septrin for two weeks, but sputum still green and felt off, so sent sputum sample to doctors surgery and started Ciprofloxacin. Think I’m bit better, hope it continues, don’t want another course of I.v treatment. Best wishes, Happy Xmas. Jean x

Hi I take it 3 times a week . But It depends on the infection and antibiotics provided. For instance it is not advised to take azythromycin when prescribed ciprofloxacin. Some antibiotics are fine to continue with azythromycin. But always consult your gp.

Hi,

Yes I too have taken azithromycin for at least six years now and have been told by consultants not to take whilst on doxycycline or other antibiotics whilst having an exacerbation.

Best wishes

Joan
