Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis

My husband was diagnosed with Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis last week. Can I ask if anyone has managed to identify the allergen responsible for their HP? Is there a test that can be done?

Sorry I can't help you with this myself. Try using the search box at the top of the page or the list of related posts to see what others have posted about your condition.

All the best,

M

For me it seems to be dust & feathers. But it takes ages to work out the trigger as tests don’t seem too helpful, & then trying to avoid triggers us even harder.

Also things like compost, mould etc not good for me.

Horse stables because of bedding/hay etc…. Life changing as always kept horses.

Hi, thanks so much for your reply. It sounds very difficult to get to the source of the problem, and quite frustrating. I’m sorry to hear you’re having to change your life style as a result.

We have changed feather duvets and cushions for fibre ones to see if that helps but otherwise at a bit of a loss.

All the best for Christmas.

we have moved from an older property to a newer one as mine seemed to be connected to doing improvements in the old property.

We now have all solid or wood floors. Hypoallergenic bedding(mattress protector)etc

Vac with HEPA filter & damp dust

Daughter has the horses & I have to avoid stables or wear mask.

Probably never know if the changes have slowed down progression & im on many drugs now as it’s caused fibrosis!

Also I kept poultry in past so that’s another possibility.

Good luck with trying to get to the bottom of it. Hope you have a good consultant?

It sounds like you’ve done everything you can to help with your condition. It seems so unfair you’ve had to change your life so much, but I really hope it will help.

I’ll look into a new vac with filter, so thanks for that.

I hope he’s a good consultant, but time will tell!

I wish you all the best.

If your husband has good days and bad days, try putting together a simple symptoms and events diary. Include date, time, food & drink, event, weather, place, symptom score (not necessarily in that order, and notes are fine). You may pick up a correlation. All the best.

hello ☺️

There’s 4 main allergens which tend to cause HP. They will automatically test you for these and ask questions. Or in some cases the allergen isn’t one of those and is harder to identify. It’s taken two years to identify mine but it was process of elimination there wasn’t a test.

To reassure you, I’m 34 with a very severe case of HP but I live incredibly well. It’s a crap condition but isn’t all doom and gloom! My specialists are excellent and I’ve recently completed a pulmonary rehab programme which was brilliant and very useful!

Feel free to message me if you need a chat. I know how daunting this can all be! X
