Was just wondering if it's normal with pulmonary fibrosis to get very tired and listless, I asked my consultant and he said everybody can get tired, not a very helpful answer x

Hi. Feeling fatigued and short of breath is very common. With myself I've noticed more now that I become very tired quickly with minimal exertion . Not every day is the same but being tired to some degree is always there 🌹

Of course everyone can get tired. But this symptom should be put in context with your health condition and what may be done to help. Someone in perfectly good health "can get tired" if they stay up all night at a party but not the same thing. x

I agree with you consultant, that "anyone can get tired" however people with 'pulmonary fibrosis' need to know can that make them tired.

I have fibrosis and other complaints and am often tired - I think anyone with an illness can feel tired, in particular I think in winter. I am no expert but I would have thought, yes it could well be normal.

With most lung diseases everything we do is an effort. Often we are at the limit of our resources. One of the tests I did came up with the result that “Your breathing reserve is minus 13%.” I said “What does that mean?” “Well, you have no breathing reserve.” Yup, I understood that. So, yes, tiredness is part of it. Be gentle with yourself. Allow extra time for any task. And explain to your family and friends how it is.

All the best

No, not very helpful at all 🙄. I'm usually feeling a bit that way myself. Little and often is what to aim for to rebuild some stamina (that's what I tell myself but saying and doing are different things). ××

Hi I have bronchiastasis and pleural effusion bilateral and I’m very tired so yes, I’d say it can affect you definitely.

Everything I've read about this condition highlights fatigue, along with joint pain. Listless would make sense, connected with lower oxygen. Of course, it's winter too, with SAD at play. Everything's connected! I'm actually enjoying having a physical reason to curl up with a book by the woodstove, cat in lap and doze!

tiredness unfortunately is a common side effect of most chronic illness, it just means we have to adapt our lifestyle accordingly

i find that if I am having a "good day" I will try to do more and then find that the next day I am shattered even though my doing more is probable much less than many people achieve in a couple of hours. xx

I do sometimes wonder about these consultants and the comments they make. I have bronchiectasis and rheumatoid arthritis and suffer fatigue quite alot and its not just tiredness its more like a bone weary condition. On days like this I dont really do anything but rest up and push myself on the good days. Its something I think we learn to live with x

'Bone weary' really sums it up Irene although some days I'm sure that I was born tired!

That's true Irene. I feel a long winter coming after a poor summer. Hope I'm wrong xx

Oh I hope you are too Carole, we are all in need of a good summer. With my hip being so bad last year the garden is sadly neglected and needs a good bit of work doing so am hoping we have a nice spring/summer to help me get back out there. The house absolutely stinks of garlic and rosemary as I cooked a lancashire hotpot for tonights dinner, thats all I have done today and feel worn out lol . Have had a busy few days x

Hi, What a silly thing for your consultant to say! Of course everyone can get tired but that's different to feeling constantly below par. I have lung conditions as well as other health and life problems and get very tired very easily. Think any long term progressive condition will make you feel exhausted. I try not think about the dust I can no longer reach and the fact that I can no longer wash the floor, walk very far etc. It's not easy and I think it must take time to accept that that's the way it is. Take care of yourself xxx

I think you've had enough answers to show that your consultant's comment was most unhelpful. I have bronchiectasis and find a busy morning means an afternoon spent asleep. Bet your consultant can't say that. xxx
