Prednisolone.. ventolin with symbicort.

Does anyone with copd and asthma use Predisolone, I was told just recently by a specialist that they can't prescribe them for these conditions. Though I have been using them for about 9 years now and every other doctor has prescribed them for me.

My condition has worsen over the last few years and I for some time been taking Ventolin 10 or so minutes before taking Symbicort, l believe it helps open the lungs so the Symbiort works better.

I also read an article the if you take the two together it reduces the chances of a asthma attack by 30%.

I would be very grateful to hear your thoughts please.

Thank you.

I have recently had a course of prednisolone for a COPD flare up. I routinely use my ventolin 10 minutes before my fostair and have done for years. I find it hard to believe that a specialist said that pred couldn't be used.

Yes I found it hard to believe also.

I got so stressed with this idiot that I didn't even ask to see, I told him he didn't know what his taking about and walked out. I told the reception it the hospital, either I see another doctor and get the medication I come in here for or I just go to another hospital. I got everything 15 minutes later.. but it has been playing on my mind so thanks for your reply.

Pete has used prednisolone for many years and still takes 10mg daily. He has COPD, sarcoidosis and asthma so I don’t understand why the specialist would say that it can’t be used. Pete uses Ventolin via his nebuliser and a Salamol inhaler. Xx

I seem to remember seeing him 9 years ago and complaining to administration about him, so it most likely he was trying to get back at me..I will most probably complain about him again when I have the time.

I have bronchiecstasis and asthma. I’ve taken 10mg of prednisolone daily as well as ventolin, followed by ciclosonidum and fluticasone in the morning and spirava at night instead of the fluticasone.

I think there is a cost-benefit analysis to be done with pred. For me there are terrible side effects like skin thinning, face swelling, appetite enhancer and insomnia. Consultant wanted me on it long term years ago for asthma and bronchiectasis and I refused. I'm not dead yet! In fact, I'm well through being careful and taking supplements. Fostair and Incruse are suiting me fine. However, there may come a point when pred might extend my life and in that case I may change my mind. Good luck with the fight!

I'm prescribed prednisolone PRN, not for my COPD/asthma as our GP doesnt give rescue packs anyway, but for allergy flare ups. I dislike the side effects, which can be quite drastic so only take it when I need to for allergy flare up - ie. angiodema or worse.

I do give careful consideration to the medications I need to take, luckily prednisolone does seem to be very helpful for me, but I only take them when I feel it's best that I do..I will stay off them now until I think I need them as am feeling much better and can do a small amount of water exercise that helps with my breathing a lot.Thank you so much for your reply.

Hi, I have Asthma not COPD and I had been told to take Ventolin to open my airways before taking my preventive inhaler. Then a couple of years ago I was told this was wrong and I should only use Ventolin if having an attack. The reason being that if you are admitted to hospital the salbutamol inhaler will not be so effective as your body will be use to it. I was told I should only get through one Ventolin inhaler a year. My doctor changed my preventer inhaler to Fobumix which is dual action and works if you have an attack too.

When I saw a specialist 9 years ago, who is a professor, he recommended that I should only take ventolin when I really needed to take it, as it was not good for the long term if taken regularly.

But in the last couple of years I feel much better when I take ventolin ten or so minutes before taking symicort.

It may have been on this forum that I read an article saying that people who took both together were 30% less likely to have an asthma attack..

But in any event, I think the long term is already here for me, so am happy to take the both together.

For me and other family members with my condition it has been used in acute setting, along with antibiotics. I would check Nice guidelines and see what it says there. x

Nottobad123 profile image
Nottobad123 in reply to Dottie11

I only used to use them and antibiotics whatever I was getting infections, but in the last couple of years I take them regularly in the mornings and have a break from them when I feel my breathing is easier. I've just started water exercise for an hour every day again and I can feel the benefits from that already.

Yes I have had the same for 9 years, I have to go back to see a different doctor this for my shoulder, I will definitely be going to see the hospital administration to make a complaint about him..

Hi Notobad, Predisilone are part of my rescue pack I can reorder without asking the Dr…i use use 40 mg X 5days course about 4 times a year with antibiotics, Symbercort and Ventolin…..and have done so for at least 20 years. The only downside I experience is sleep deprivation as a side evect

I take 10mg every morning, two puff of ventolin and wait 10 minutes or so before I take one puff of symbicort. My condition has worsen dramatically in the past year due to a damaged shoulder and have not been able to do any exercise at all..but I gave been trying very hard to do water exercises with one arm in the last few days and am feeling the benefits already.Am glad I posted on here, it's made me feel much better.

I was prescribed a 5 day course of Prednisolone along with antibiotics just over a week ago, for a chest infection.

Nottobad123 profile image
Nottobad123 in reply to Welshcatlady

For the past 9 years I have always had and taken prednisolone and antibiotics every time I felt my chest was had or was getting an infection, but in the past a year or so, I've felt it better to take 10mg in the mornings to help with inflation as my breathing has definitely worsen due to the lack of exercise through injury. Am trying hard now to start exercising and with water activities.

Normally prednisolone is prescribed along with an anti biotic for an infection or exacerbation. Would not recommend long term use as the side effects are very powerful, as with all steroids and cause long term damage, weight gain, skin thinning and bloating being among them. With the NHS in such a chronic state I'm always wary of doctors refusing certain established treatments as they often use arbitary excuses to hide cost cutting motives. Good of you to stand your ground, but beware long term dependence.

Luckily I haven't had any side effects from them other than they used to make me very hungry and I did put on a lot of weight, but that was some years ago and I soon got that under control, am fine now with a healthy bmi.Am not in the UK so I rely on private hospital when I need medication that I can't get from a clinic.

This was the first time in 16 years I've had a problem with getting what I needed..but I got it just 15 minutes later after walking out of his room.

Hi chook. After a recent dog attack on one of my dogs I really overdid it trying to save him (which I did) I haven't been the same since. With copd the first thing they tried me on was prednisone steroids for a week, so yes they do still prescribe this for copd or asthma so don't be fobbed off. There are a few new doctors about that I have heard of just in my area and believe me they shouldn't be practising. Be firm. Good luck 👍 😉

I think I was more concerned about others who where new to this terrible disease who would believe what he was saying to be true.. it's my thoughts as well that he shouldn't be practicing. Am relaxed now..😊👍

Exactly, what would we do without them and the antibiotics. Luckily after 9 years of this terrible disease I have learned enough to know what I need to help myself get better. Hopefully I can go for another 10 years 😁👍
