I think I've only posted once in 10 months ,I have been in so much pain I haven't had the blast to do anything ,in November last year I was suffering badly for months with siatica couldn't put my foot on floor ,this was just getting better when I bent down to tidy some books and fratured my spine in three place ,inbetween all this I got diagnosed with rheaumatiod arthritis, so I've gone through some pane of late , getting back to ventilin, I feel as if my breathing has got worse putting that down to lack of excerise, do others find that ventilin does very little for copd ,I think it maybe more for asthma, wondering is there an alternitive to ventilin for copd suffers who don't have asthma, I take my spirva and fostair 8 o'clock I'm morning, there is no way they would last me untill 8oclock at night ,I take fostair agian 4oclock day ,wondering is there an alternitive to ventilin that I could use in between, thanks for listening Alice

Good to see you Alice but so sorry to hear of your health problems. Sciatica is awful but to fracture your spine too sounds horrendous.

Pete has COPD and was told he also has asthma so I can’t be of much help I’m afraid. I’m sure you’ll get some replies soon. I just wanted to say hello. Xxx🩷😘

Oh dear, that’s a shame. Pete has regular Dexa scans for osteoporosis. Hope you have support with that. Take care xxx

Hi Alice I just bent down to pick up something I dropped Dr thought I had pulled a side muscle it took 4 months before I got an X ray and was told that I had 6 spine fractures T 7 to T12 that was 18 months ago I had a Dexa scan after waiting another 4 months and I too have osteoporosis all this happened a week before my husband died so it was an horrendous time it has left me with pain in my knees a curvature of the spine so use a stick for support now, but I am thankful it is not anything worse so like so many on the forum we plod on, take things steady and take care .

I am on fostair 100 mart. That means I take fostair morning and evening and up to 4 other doses during the day.

Spreading the fostair over the day helps me and reduces my need for ventolin.

Alice70 profile image
Alice70 in reply toHomely2

Is fostair mart the same as fostair 100/6 ,so how many puffs altogether in a day do you take ,I sometimes sneak an extra puff during the day

Homely2 profile image
Homely2 in reply toAlice70

For fostair 100/6 mart , I am allowed a max of 8 doses a day of fostair 100, under a dosing regime called mart.

So I take two when I wake up, two when I go to bed, and two at lunchtime, leaving two in reserve for attacks during the day.

When my asthma is under control I just take one in morning and one at night.

My issue when under fostair 200 was that it did not last the day, I then had to resort to heavy use of ventolin, which then became ineffective for me. Fostair 100 mart regime gets around this, so now if I have to use ventolin it is highly effective

The issue with mart for me is that when my lungs get heavily inflamed the fostair 100 cannot handle it. I am then allowed to switch back to fostair 200 at my discretion.

Hello, I'm on duaklir genuair and the brown inhaler plus salamol as a reliever (wish it was ventolin) but my duaklir genuair I don't wait for the 12 hrs as I take it 8am and then 3.30 pm but that works for me. Maybe have a word with your gp. 12 hrs is too long and you only end up clock watching. Good luck 👍. Let us know how you get on 😉

Thank you ,thought salamol was the same as ventilin

Hello Alice 70. I too have copd. And Asthma and I find Ventolin doesn't help me at all when walking. So I was told by 2 health professionals that it could be heart related and not given an alternative inhaler to try. I am waiting now for an appointment to check my pacemaker settings incase it's that. Hope you get some help with your breathing. Any other illness that affects you from getting around like normal will not help your lung function and makes breathing worse. But when you have had back problems you can't help it. It's a vicious circle with some of these health conditions. Take care. Brian

Hi Alice70I found I couldn't take ventolin, so.i was put on Turbutaline, it's still a blue one, but it works for me, can take it 4 times a day, its called Bricanyl Turbohaler, 0.5mg/ dose, perhaps your consultant or Gp could change you from Ventolin.

Good luck

Trish.

Hello Alice. Sorry to hear of all your problems. I think you need to talk to your GP. First to see if there is a better regime for your respiratory problems. I found the respiratory nurses in my area very helpful. Secondly to help with the pain. Some health authorities run a pain clinic, who may be able to give you some tips. I wonder if gentle physiotherapy would help. Best wishes. xxx

I've been told to rest my backup till this big one heals which the two small ones have ,when I have asked to speak to respiratory team in the main hospital ,they don't seem to know what I'm talking about, thanks for reply Alberta

Hello Alice 70, you are having a rough time. If your back is due to osteoporosis there are treatments for the pain worth asking your practice nurse or GP, if you feel you need help. Secondly on the Ventolin subject I take this but its not for Asthma I take it for my COPD cough so it is only for symptom relief . There are other inhalers but this is the main one of choice by the GPs and NHS although its usually used for Asthma or panic attacks. When my cough is really bad it does not work . My advice would be to talk to your surgery about it as we are all different and you may need a change if your breathing is worse, anemia can affect breathing too as can the heart so its not good to presume its one thing as it may be something new. It can be daunting as we get older remember COPD can effect the efficiency of your body too, so take care , and with what has happened to you give yourself time to recover and don't be afraid to ask for a medical opinion as to your current health issues. Good luck with Ventolin issues and hopefully you will begin to feel better in the near future. Thinking of you xx

I should try again to get help. One thing you learn on this forum is that you have to be persistent. Good luck. xxx

Hi Alice

I take Spiriva in the morning and Fostair twice a day, BUT can take up to four extra puffs of Fostair during the day. Not all at the same time! Once I’ve used the four puffs then on to Ventolin. I very rarely need the four extra puffs. The Fostair during the day seems to be enough. I’m also on carbocisteine three times a day and Montelukast at night. Maybe have your inhalation method checked and see either specialist nurse or doctor. My asthma nurse is very goo and keeps an eye on everything with me.

Alice70 profile image
Alice70 in reply toSuziElley

I think if your asthmatic you are able to take extra fostair ,I'm not asthmatic so I've only been told to take two puffs morning two at night

SuziElley profile image

May be worth asking about? In any case, maybe you should try to see your doctor and get checked. All the very best 🙏🏻

I didn’t find ventolin to be of much use for me. I have Bricanyl now instead and find it better than ventolin. I don’t find a huge benefit from it but it does help some and was better than ventolin for me anyway.

so sorry your having such a difficult time and having so much pain. I just wonder if your pain is adding to your breathlessness. Until recently I had been waiting for hip replacement, the pain was constant and intense, I found the pain really affected my breathing, which has now improved since have hip replacement. I was advised by respiratory whilst waiting for operation to take up to 4 extra puffs of fostair a day even though I have ventilin, which respiratory advised I could take up to 8 times a day as well. As always though I would urge you to take medical advice on what would be suitable for you. Hope your soon feeling more comfortable and breathing easier, take care x

I think you need to speak to your asthma nurse or your GP, I’ve had sciatica after a fall. Amitryptline took the electric pain out of it’s been painful. I’m currently in hospital when I get out will be going back to sports physio, who is worth every penny. I hope you feel a little better soon
