For those taking this drug through winter three days a week do you take 250mg or 500mg ? Does anyone take it for five days on occasions ? I am finding three days. Mon, Wed, Fri not quite enough at the moment. Thank you.

Thank you. I thought maybe some people took 500mg as I find 250 not enough.

They have said that I can also look at moving to every day if needs be ... however looking around Google at research papers it appears there's a greater chance of becoming antibiotic resistant and them stopping working if you take them every day.

Yes always my worry too.

Yes, especially as I have become (they believe) temporarily antibiotic resistant in the past after a particularly nasty bout of tonsillitis.

However I've been taking azythromycin for 7-8 months now and things have been better.

Hi Dottie, Pete takes a 500mg Azithromycin three times a week but has on occasion taken it for five days especially if he’s felt a bit chesty. If you’re not happy with the dose then speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Xxx

250mgs for me on 3 days per week November to April. Many years ago after 2 - 3 years of infections and many different antibiotics a good gp at my then London practice put me on a cure regime of Azith 500mg daily for 4 consecutive days then 7 days without, I had to do this for three whole months which gradually & finally worked. It was the beginning of the end of 5 x pneumonia and all the infections. It took many months to rebuild my immune system by throwing everything at including Manuka honey at £50 a pot.

Ah this all makes for interesting reading. Sounds a good plan and so pleased this worked for you. Gp sounds very good. Yes I am a bit fan of Manuka. As soon as cough and sore throat I am on it. Thank you.

Unfortunately I moved out of London 9 years ago, the practice I'm at in Gloucestershire is pretty rubbish. Anyhoo, I'm the only one I know who's been prescribed Azith as a regular antibiotic albeit in the past but it worked at that time when I was poorly over 4-5 years. The consultant dismissed Azithromycin when I saw him, claiming Azith does nothing by dry up mucus and labelled that gp as incompetent. Im very glad I have it for 3 days out of a week though. It most definitely helps prevent many infections taking hold.

I'd suggest that if the 250mgs isn't doing it fir you at the moment could something else be brewing for you?

Yes London has some really good places. I thought Glos would be Ok but that is based on someone who lived there years ago and they were not lungs. I agree that sounds an odd comment from your consultant. But nothing surprises me anymore. Thanks again really helpful.

Thank you to everyone for these interesting and informative answers. I assumed we were all on the same dose and days. Now I have more options and more confidence to plan what to do next. Very grateful to you all.

I'm on 250 three times a week all year round, but my last bad infection was in the summer.

I’m just about to do that exact thing. I have Azith 250 Mon Wed Fri and now I have a prescription for pred and Azith for 5 days. I obviously won’t double up on the Azith with the 3 times a week but can go back to that after the 5 days.

Sorry to hear you are struggling Dottie.I am on 250mg 3x7. If this is not having the desired effect I would see my GP or prescribing Pharmacist to increase the dose. They may decide to write to my respiratory team at the hospital. Hope you are feeling better soon xxx💗
