Something else to cope with

My husband went to his doctors today suffering from sinus problems. I had seen mention of some bronchiectasis sufferers having this problem. Our practice nurse eliminated other causes following two recent courses of antibiotics for a chest infection.

It now transpires that 62%+ of bronchiectasis sufferers have severe sinus problems as the sinuses become inflamed. He now has to have a steroid nasal inhaler to use twice daily until the sinus clears and then once daily thereafter.

Needless to say he is feeling pretty miserable and wonders how much more this condition will impact on his life. He was diagnosed about 2 yrs ago and now that winter is upon us is struggling.

No doubt there are people a lot worse off but it’s hard for him to shake off the low spirits, especially as the cold, damp days restrict getting out and about.

Hi, My wife has bronch and also suffers from sinusitis. She uses, several times a day, na nasal wash of sea water. Seems to do the trick and keeps infection at bay. Good luck and take care, Chris.

I agree. My sinus issues worse this time of year. Colder, heating on makes for dry air which effects my nasal issues and hence sinus worse. Nose and lungs and my Bronch all connect. Good luck with spray it does help.

hi maninblack. I have bronchiectasis/asthma and last winter I was ill a lot with infections. The last infection was sinus so I was prescribed a steroid nasal spray which I took 2 squirts in each nostril twice a day until feeling better then lowered to one I’ve just had to revert back to 2 squirts in each nostril 2x daily as the weather seems to be affecting me and my head was feeling rotten. The cold weather affects us and I was interested to find out the bronc sufferers can get sinus problems. X

Thank you for your reply. This is exactly the same treatment my husband is starting. I hope it works and we will watch out for flare ups. Hope the spray soon sorts out your sinus and that you have an infection free Christmas.

Hi, I have Bronchiectasis and suffer from blocked, itchy & wet inner ears and a blocked nose. The Ear, Nose & Throat specialist said that its to do with the Eustachian tubes that go from your nose/ears to your throat being dysfunctional (which I suppose must therefore affect your lungs?). Wasn't aware at the time that it was to do with Bronchiectasis because I've always suffered from ear problems (I have hearing aids). But so many people have said they too suffer from nose or ear problems that it made me realise they were connected. Just another thing to deal with 🙄. I totally understand just how it is making your husband feel. Take care xxx

After having several infections and alot of fuss with over production of mucus the ent sent me for ct scan which showed all six sinus's infected and had been for a long time. He gave me a low dose of Doxycyline for 6 weeks whuch helpled alot. The steroid nasal spray did nothing for me. I keep my sinus 's clear now with Sterimar twice a day to wash out the gunk and if I get too much mucus I use Otrivine nasal spray or antihistamine. If my sinus's get infected now my gp gives me Betnesol drops. Its a nightmare keeping your sinus's healthy but if not then your chest gets infected and ends up being a merry go round. I ended up having a sinus op and it did help for a while . I hope this helps and hubby starts to feel better soon x

I had sinus issues before I was diagnosed with Bronchiectasis. If your husband’s sinuses are really bad he should get a neilmed sinus rinse bottle and use daily. Make up the solution with salt and bicarb as per the nhs website. Sterimar spray is also useful. It’s really important to clear the gunk from your sinuses otherwise you could end up with an infection. Mine were so bad I’ve had a couple of FESS ops on them and are better than they used to be. BTW neilmed is recommended by every ENT doctor I’ve seen. Code me is good when the pain is really bad.
