I was worried about that when my little granddaughter's op site grew a massive infection 4 weeks after a major op on head (Metopic Craniosynostosis). I asked daughter to find out the name of bacteria. Luckily it was a streptococcal bug, she had about 8 weeks of IV abs.I would think antibiotics are given as a matter of course after serious operations.

I hope your relative will be alright

Sorry to hear of your relative's woes. My father had a hip repaired a few months ago and when I went to see him he was hooked up to a drip. I surreptitiously looked at his notes: "Hospital acquired Pneumonia" he was on IV antibiotics. I was cross that this just seemed to be the norm, but also that I, obviously on oxygen wasn't warned!

Hope she's soon well, xx

Sorry to hear your news , it seems that hospital acquired infections are becoming more common as the use of antibiotics is reduce in all areas. In most cases now hospitals use intravenous infection control. I always get bladder infection following reduced fluid intake prior to operations , we are all different and as we get older our system does not work as fast. Hope the infection soon subsides as the cancer bit is bad enough without infection too.

anti biotics are now being regarded as use to be saved as w ehave had no new ones discovered for many many years . when i had hospital aquired UTI t was given routine first line antiboitc naladixic acid . it was resistant of course so then had ? pimethicilin which i had never heard of !

I retired 26 years ago from work in ta routine microbiology lab . I was dubious about this new name until i found it was a combination drug of two quite common antibiotics.

( including the one i was about to request myself ) This was brilliant. Relief in a day almost . Definitely need to read more and keep up to date before I start making comments about things i have not met before. ( To know a little can be sometimes worse than not knowing at all.)

but it is serious that we havent found more, and also serious that the farmers can use them indiscriminately when their use is being restricted for us humans . Resistance can develop very easily .
