Portable air con this summer?

As this summer is promising to be hotter than the last few summers I'm wondering about portable air conditioners.

I haver Aspergillus, Bronchiectasis and bullous emphysema.

After a bit of research it seems that there are two types.

1. mains powered with an exhaust pipe that goes to the outside of the room. 1.5 Kw / 2.7 Kw. So expensive to run long term.

2. Mains powered or 12/24 v DC powered these use water in the cooling process and need topping up with no exhaust to the outside. . Therefore the water loss must raise the humidity in the room this is not good if you have fungal infections.

Not expensive to run especially if you run them from a small solar power supply.

Does anyone have experience or views?

Best regards to everyone.

Sitting in the car with the engine running and air con on cold is for the third year running is not an option.😱😱

Hi, in my opinion the aircon that is the most efficient and safe is the best option, but it’s whether it is affordable.

No, sitting in stationary car with engine running is not good, even with aircon on.

I hope you manage to get sorted.

I have a hepa filter air purifier on almost all the time in my main room, it helps.

Hi Banjostrap ... I Have Bronchiectasis usually with Pseudomonas, Staphylcoccus A or Aspergillus ... I'm under a specialist hospital that are great so I'm very lucky.firstly I was bought a Himialayan Salt Lamp but didn't notice how good it was ...so didn't always use it.

Then on an audio call with our newish GP he told me has has been recommending HEPA FILTER AIR PURIFIERs he says they make such a difference...and he told me the nasal spray I'm on is as good as water... so prescribed Dymista nasal spray ... which is really good .. so I treated myself to a hepa filtered Air Purifier... ...

Lovely man ! So I've got the three things besides my Ventolin Accuhaler, Seretide Accuhaler and for mid day Spiriva inhaler ..

I would recommend having both air purifier and Salt lamp if you can afford it ...

To use at different times ... I use the salt lamp all night and air purifier daytime ..

Each one cost about £40 each .. you're worth it

I have a vented portable one but just use when I have to regardless of the electric charges it helps a lot

It would be good to check out how much electricity it would use because on the instructions of the one I bought it claimed to use very very little electricity...

I had the water air cooler type for years…. As you say water spores collected on the filter. But it was also useless in an average size room …and had to keep the door shut .

Ive never had the other sort .. but friends have one and it’s very efffective .

Hi, I have bronchiectasis and asthma. I have a vented pipe out the window aircon. I stopped using it as it was great to cool the room down, but after a while gave off heat from working so hard and made the room stuffy. It also made the pvc window frame very hot, but it's about 10 years old and may not be working properly anymore, so the newer ones are probably better.

The last couple years I've used an hepa air filter, when it's hot I run the dehumidifier for a couple hours before going to bed, then a fan running through the night as well. I did put frozen bottles of water in front of the fan when it was really hot and very low humidity, which I found worked well but not an option for you unfortunately.

I know someone on another site had something installed to regulate the temperature in the house, but he's not able to type at the moment so he wouldn't be able to answer if I asked him what it was, but maybe someone else knows what it could have been.

Sorry, I've been no real help.

hi we recently bought an air purifier which is giving us relief at night and the air feels cooler! My husband suffers from constant rhinitis which medication isnt helping- it has helped! Good luck in your search!

Hi... tell your husband to request a different nasal spray because the one they give him doesn't help, I was on Nasonex for years then the practice put me on a cheaper one which was as good as tap water ... the new GP there changed My prescription to Dymista nasal spray ... its really good .

You're welcome ... another recommendation I'd like to give is treat yourselves to a genuine Himalayan Salt Lamp and if possible a portable Hepa Filter Air Purifier ... they're around 40 each but definitely worth the effort ...I also use Neilmed nasal rinse at least once a day .. I bought that on the recommendation of a Doctor at me hospital ..

For me the Salt lamp keep my chest clearer and the Air Purifier cools the air down in the room ..

I know this means spending our own money when we often feel we should be able to get from NHS but sometimes it needs to be done to help ourselves ..

Good luck x

thank you, chest wise he is fine, just the nasal drip which we believe may be due to the statin he takes!

Hi Banjostrap, we live in a SW facing flat so overheating is a constant. 20 yrs ago when we first moved in we tried a portable ACon, it ran on the principle of ice cubes with a fan running through the ice therefore the air was cooler. It lasted about 45 mins before we needed to top up the ice. Not having a never ending supply of ice we soon became very cross this this so called ACon. After suffering 2 more years with fans and this annoying ACon we decided to bite the bullet and buy proper Air conditioning. It wasn't easy to find a company who would install AC in a domestic home but we finally found a company and have never looked back. If you cannot go down this road I can recommend Uni-view blinds these come in white or black, black is the best. They are relatively cheap to buy and really do keep the heat from the room. They are used in Hotels and Airports in Spain. If you google Uni-view blinds you will find any number of suppliers. Good luck and I wish you a cooler lounge and bedroom. Take care, Maximonkey

I use a mains one with exhaust out of the window it's noisy but soon cools a room down all night .I don't care about the expense if it helps breathing

Hi all. Thanks for your replies. Lots of useful info there. I'm leaning towards a mains powered air con to go in a room that overlooks the garden and a Bosch HEPA filter for the bedroom.

Best regards to all and thanks again.
