Hi Pauline, honestly none of us can answer your question, first because we are not medically trained, but secondly because there will be so many different clinical symptoms and/or conditions to consider for every individual. We are all different and none of us know how long we have got, though I realise that saying this won't address your anxiety. I would suggest that you telephone the Asthma and Lung Conditions helpline on 0300 222 5800 and talk this through with their very kind and knowledgeable nurses. I hope this will be helpful. Do take care, very best wishes, Jean
It's to help you maintain acceptable 02 levels in body.talk to yr nurse or gp re yr concerns.theyre best placed to answer u.my opinion is its to help u live, not die xx
I think the suggestion t ring asthma uk is a good idea. Perhaps you could ring British lung Foundation as well .
Are you on 10 litres now? Has it helped ? Don’t know what support is available but m your area.
Is it possible you could contact who ever advised upping your oxygen.
The number is the same for both Asthma UK and Lung Conditions Community, Oshgosh, something I find irritating but par for the course since the amalgamation. Although maybe there are separate nurses to address both. There is some overlap of course but I preferred it when you knew for sure that you would get a nurse who was expert in one or the other condition.
I hope someone can set your mind at rest. Best wishes xxx
I am on 10 litres and have been so for some time. Talk to someone in your respiratory team. It may help to write your questions down so you dont forget anything. If you dont understand an answer ask until you do. Grab all the help and support you are offered and if not offered ask. I am still here after a year on 10 Litres and am determined to be here a lot longer yet. I do not know if allowed but pm me and maybe we could chat. Take care x
Hello Chalky. This is a difficult question to answer.I have a friend who has been on high flow oxygen for about seven years now and although her quality of life is not great , she still manages to have small outings and maintains her sense of humour.
This must be a worrying time for you. I am wondering if you have a respiratory nurse? They may be more informed about your condition than we are. Also your doctor would probably be able to answer this question but I must add probably not with accuracy as honestly no-one really knows. I would say please talk frankly with your family about your concerns too. We often steer away from difficult conversations worried about upsetting others. Yet, these honest discussions are definitely necessary.
Ultimately though none of us know what the future holds. I just try to live everyday and enjoy the small joys in life and leave the rest to the powers that be.
Sending very good wishes.
Cas xx ❤️
Hi Chalky 2, I think your best plan is to contact Raven_88 & also talk to the team who run this group , they are the ones who can talk you through what you need, wishing you well & hope you get the answers you need 💐🌷🍀xx

There are some excellent posts here Chalky2. I really understand your worry as I felt the same when I had necrotic pneumonia. It is something worth dicussing with your GP and care providers. Best wishes from JJ and hope you feel better soon xxx
Lots of useful help here but mostly we would all advise talking to you COPD professional (or your GP if that is all that is available). But partly this will depend on the method of delivery. Is it by canular or mask? If mask is it a tight fit or loose? Are you on O2 all day or by number of hours? Its really very complicated.
The O2 in the air you breath is only 19.6% of what you breath in; the rest is vastly mostly the inert (inactive) gas nitrogen. You take in around 10-12 litres of O2 per minute so even at 10litres per minute it is essentially support (additional) rather than total O2 supply.
I would like others recommend taking advice from your COPD team and especially the oxygen specialist(s).
hi, I agree with most comments on here. I was born with PCD, have managed to have normal life until recently. Hope your doctor/consultant gives you best advice attention and help. Best wishes, Jean x
Hello I'm on 15 litres of oxygen and have been for nearly a year. Cant have any higher. It protects your organs if your sats were low. May only be short term, everyone's different.
Hi, you don't say what condition you have. If it's Pulmonary Fibrosis contact Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis or speak to you consultant or respiratory nurse who will offer lots of support. Good luck and keep positive.
