We have one of those little heaters that you plug in and it quickly heats up the room. Economic to run too.
Heating on low here too. Stay warm. 🥰❤️💜🤗
I'm still in shorts for walking I just get so warm otherwise I wear wet gear on rainy days though...I quite like those heaters you stay comfy and warm 🥰
Is that the little ones currently advertised on social media's for about £55? X
Yes that’s right Pat xxxx
Thanku.do they seem cheap to run? X
Yes they do. Don’t need it on for too long. We also have the teddy bear blankets from Dunelm. Pete really likes them.
Gd to get cosy.im thinking about those heaters, for family really.thanx Sassy xx
Hi Sassy, are the little heaters by ecowarm pls x
Ours just says Pro X on the box but I believe there are many on the market that are very good. Hope you find something you want. Xxx
There's one called Alpha Heater which is really being pushed on social media. Invented by an American jet engineer. I thought it sounded too good to be true - it plugs into a socket (though U.S. plug needing a convertor).
I get cold without noticing, then realise I am trembling with the cold and it takes ages to warm up again. I guess that "old lady body thermostat problems"!
I’ve heard of that Jean. This one is very similar and works well.
Don’t get too cold, that’s not good. Don’t know about thermostat problems but you’ve not got an old lady body I’m sure.
Love and warm hugs, Carole xxx🤗❤️🔥
Im what they call 'lean' Carole, ie too skinny but with a large abdomen which I think is due to insulin resistance (being as im prediabetic). Im trying to watch and notice when Im getting colder. I guess this is on the edge of hypothermia and you hear of old people sinking into that without realising. I smile thinking of you and Pete in your teddy bear blankets. Love to both of you xxxxx
Just a thought but have you taken a lot of prednisone during your lifetime? I used to be a nice shape but now my arms & legs are stick thin and yet my abdo is kind of solid (ie not fat, just big!), my little waist has entirely disappeared. I’ll be 42 til next week. Right now I’ve also got that steroid moon face but hoping that’ll go as I reduce back to my normal pred dose
I'm body shape is a similar profile to yours ED. I have to work hard, ie eat when I dont want to, to keep any weight on. And I have taken a massive amount of steroids. 2018 I was hospitalised twice with pneumoniax2 and respiratory failure, so loads of hydrocortisone via IV over three weeks each time. And other earlier hospitalisations plus countless courses of prednisone since early adulthood. I think its probably why Im prediabetic as its certainly not because of lifestyle things. Ive always had a good diet with very little sugar or simple carbs, and always exercised.
My stomach is also hard but with a kind of blob of fat on top of it which I assume is due to insulin resistance. I would have thought the moonface would resolve when you no longer need the medication. My father had moonface from loads of steroids due to intractable lupus, and his face would "deflate" during better patches. I do hope you can get out of hospital soon. Nice to be in touch
I came out this morning! It was supposed to be yesterday (long story) so all my drugs & discharge stuff was ready to go today.
Oh yes I know the moonface will go but I can only wean by 5mg each week so will be a while yet. Bloody steroids, they’ve saved both our lives by the sound of it but do so much hidden damage. I don’t even find they work very well anymore, other than IV.
Btw, you were asking about Hungryhufflepuff. She is a very valued member here who keeps sheep. She has not been on for a while and I believe has communicated with a friend here that she needs to take time out. I for one would love to hear any news of her.
Sounds an interesting woman! I do hope she comes back. I’m very fond of sheep actually, such benign creatures, and shepherds reckon they have personalities and befriend each other. It’s difficult, in a group, when someone you’re fond of goes awol. It’s surprising how much you can gel with someone you’ve never spoken to, let alone met!
If I have one if those days when I can't get warm even with the heating on. Rather than turn it up I put my cuddly dressing gown on over my clothes.
So do I 🤣🤣🤣
A warm, even temperature is best for sensitive lungs and mine just don’t cope with cold air, so when I get out of hospital I’ll be turning the heating up, & if it’s less than 5° I leave it on all night anyway. I think the media have panicked people about fuel bills. We’re all getting £67 monthly, so I’m not worrying about it. And pensioners will receive an extra £500 or £600
I agree. I am on a fixed tarrif until May anyway. No matter how warm my body is, it is the temp of the air around me that affects me most. I know that everybody's circumstances are different but do feel that the media are panicking everyone to the point where the vilnerable are making themselves suffer and putting their health at risk more than they should.
So the heating stays on.
Yr v fortunate to b on fixed tariff. No,it's not down to media.hard cold facts are gas+ electric prices are VERY high and will b going up again in January.add in increased shopping prices, high interest rates on mortgages, increased rents, high fuel cost - lots of people are struggling
And I’m sick of hearing the phrase “heating or eating”! We’re a young family (40s), on a very modest income, but are cautious with money eg all meals home-cooked, usually in the slow cooker. We have regular treats, but haven’t had a holiday in years. We’re happy though!
I really sympathise with the elderly on low incomes and with struggling young families. But I also believe in individual responsibility, so I often ask myself, why do people have more children than they can afford? why do they live to the max of their budget and not save a little each month? why borrow money at very low interest rates, for a new car or a holiday, which you can’t afford to repay if rates go up, thereby putting your home at risk? It’s madness, yet I see so much of it in my own family. There are some things no one can foresee eg illness, redundancy, bereavement, but the modern trend to live for today & not plan for the future is responsible for a lot of people’s woes
I agree with your attitude, it's common sense really, but seems to have largely disappeared since I was younger. I grew up during and after war, everything was rationed but we survived with make do and mend etc. Best regards, Jean x
't fault your comment,it'it'sit'it'sspot on.on.Add to that people take on mortgages for bigger houses than they can afford.afford.This is greed.greed.Thay have good incomes ut are rendered poor because of the repayments.repayments.Better to take on a lesser mortgage and live more comfortably instead of an incessant struggle.struggle.This greed is at the base of a lot of people'people's woes.
Yes, the media have moved on from covid “you’re all going to die and let’s lock down forever” to “heat or eat”. I accept, as Littlepom says, everyone’s circumstances are different but I grew up in a cold house (see my response to Don) and I’m b*****ed if I’m going to be cold in retirement. We’ve had the heating on for weeks. Yes I’m in Scotland and yes it didn’t get up above 3c today and no we are not, and never will be, adapted to it; we have not grown hairy bodies!
I was open-mouthed yesterday when I heard someone on the radio say they were putting the heating on for the first time. Blackbird is wearing shorts! Great, I am so jealous, but we are still all one country and I really believe the heating allowances should be graded by degrees of latitude. HungryHufflepuffle would be quids in! As an aside….I miss her.
Yes evolution has let you down there, teenie, you Scots could do with a layer of fur! On the question of the cost of heating though, my relatives from northern climes (only Lancs) don’t stop complaining about the price of everything whenever they visit the south (especially “a brew”), so there’s that to consider. And housing costs are astronomical. Church mice have nothing on us 🤣
I think Blackbird must be very hardcore, still wearing shorts, brrr x
I still wear shorts at this time of year due to my dog walking business I get very warm in jeans or trousers when moving around and driving so shorts is a good solution..when home I put my normal joggers on for comfort and warmth as I tend to become cooler when not moving around.. not hard core at all 😂😂😂
Only if they are on pension credit. The only thing I got extra apart from the money we all get of course is £300 extra fuel allowance. It's usually £200 for me and I got £500.
oh, I thought all pensioners got the winter fuel allowance
I think I’ll get an extra £150 because I get some pip
All state pensioners get the winter fuel allowance. If living alone you get £200 under 80. A couple would get £300 between them and a single one over 80 gets £300.00. I think those on pension credits got an extra cost of living rise which is nothing to do with the winter fuel allowance.
As stated I got my usual £200 plus an extra £300 this year for the cost of living.
oh, I get it now. I’m surprised ALL state pensioners get it because where I live a lot of them are relatively well off, but I suppose it’d cost more to means test it than it’d save. Anyway they’ve worked all their lives.
I hope you’re being careful with your scooter in this freezing weather! If you breakdown you’ll turn into a snowman ⛄️
I've warm lightweight fleece blankets on arms of settee.theyre perfect for me x
I’m with you blackbird , I slip my feet into an electric foot warmer on the settee then cover with a fleece throw that retains the heat and warms my whole body ( two dogs lying on me helps a great deal too ) Having said that I also agree with Eleanor digby , I’m careful but not worried about heating bills , if the heating needs to goes on it goes on ! Over the past three months my bills have been £20 over the monthly direct debit I already pay even asfter the £67 provided by the government but I’ve just received the extra £500 winch means I can stay straight for the next 25 months ! Even with the current drop in temperatures I’m pretty sure I can get through the winter debt free 🤷🏻♀️😊
Right so we are all coming to your place pop the kettle on please 😂😂
you’re all very welcome as long as you all promise to visit me in debtors prison if my calculations are wrong 🤔 and we’ll all get free heating there .. it’s a win win situation 🥳😂
Two pairs of socks, cotton first, then wool. Two jumpers if need be, plus track suit top!
In this weather I put the heating on for an hour to take the chill off, then put the halogen heater on for an hour in the living room. My fleece dressing gown keeps me warm along with my fleece bootees. I have a throw on my settee and that keeps me warm till bedtime. Hot water bottle also helps. I made a curtain for my front door as well as this helps to stop the draughts. I have wooden blinds but also have curtains on all windows. With all the help from the government I wont have a problem getting through winter this year. I dont like being cold but then I dont like being too hot either x
Just remembered the teddy bear blankets from Dunelm. They do a whole range of things. Xxx
I have wheat bags you warm up in the microwave. An oblong one that I put on my back (under my top and trousers but over my thermal vests!). Helps keep me warm and great for soothing lower back pain too. A cuddly one for when I'm resting and also wear a woolly hat indoors when (like today) it's really cold. ☃️xxx
Oh my goodness where are you to be wearing a woolly hat indoors sounds very cold 🥶
😅I live in Sussex but am all skin and bone so feel the cold. I'm known for wearing many layers. If I'm seen out in a T shirt it must be a scorcher! 😂xxx
I lived in Sussex many moons ago worked at Goring Hall Hospital as a theatre sister and I lived in Angmering 🥰
Wow I remember when Goring Hall was a boarding school - I went in to the grounds for fete days. And more recently the ilex (and the rife) were two of the places I used to walk my dogs. What a small world! 😊❤️
thermal ware ( t shirts & socks) and fluffy dressing gown or hooded fluffy tops over my clothes. Wheat bags. There’s so much fluffy mess out there to choose from now.
Re the small ceramic heaters. A recent survey on morning TV showed that with regard to cost and efficiency the small ceramic heaters were excellent value but did note that the outer casing could get very hot and should never be left in an empty room or in reach of pets or children.
After reading about heated throws on here, I treated myself. It's wonderful! I whack it on to high for a short time to warm through then turn it off and the residual heat is usually enough to keep me warm for another couple of hours.
Also, I can recommend M&S leggings and vests - the the stretchy ones that claim to keep you warm - the label says,Heatgen'. The stretch in the leggings makes them really easy to pull on and off, same with the vest. I'm managing them easily with one hand at the moment. I have them on under trousers and tops as an extra layer and forget I have them on as they're so comfy.
Also, Primark have long sleeved, cuffed pj's made from a slightly fleecy fabric, almost like a fine velour. They are not the most attractive but the cuffs on the sleeves and legs help keep the heat in. Can't wear the tops at the moment as can't get my cast through the cuff, but the bottoms are keeping my legs lovely and warm.
For riding my mob scooter, I have bought fleece lined, waterproof over trousers from Cotton Traders. I have yet to try them out as haven't been able to use the scooter due to the broken wrist. I think I'm ready to get on it again now. The steering is no problem but didn't fancy jarring my arm on the dreadful bumpy pavements!
Cotton Traders also have some great, fluffy lined bobble hats and matching gloves. Got them for the scooter, too, but will only be able to wear one until the cast comes off, so I will wrap the dodgy hand in something or other and drive one handed.
Sorry, don't have any suggestions to offer the blokes.
Xx Moy
I have just ordered some M and S heat gen tops and footless tights , and a furry hooded blanket too.
Bought with some of the money my late mother left me …..can’t believe I still have to depend on my late parents for clothes in my old age !
I have generously sized, lined curtains. Down to the floor in the living rooms. They really help to keep the heat in.
what a lot of ideas. Our central heating is on at 19-19.5degrees. Hubby says it’s cold and will have a hot water bottle too! He has his car heating on at 25 degrees whilst mine is lucky to be above 19 X
Lots of ideas here. I find I'm feeling the cold more than I used to. I'm mostly layering up, pop socks under normal socks, wrist warmers, full gloves under thermal fingerless gloves, leg warmers, vests, long sleeve t. shirts, gillets and tank tops ( my new favourite!) I did get warm today in zumba (seated), and after removing my scarf, zippy top and fleece gillet only my p.e. shirt and vest were covering my modesty 🤣
Some great ideas here, I’m feeling warmer just reading them all! As for me, I’m in the fluffy throw club😊 Ordered some from Dunelm for the chairs but apparently they’re for the cats, who have glued themselves to them, so I had to get another one for me! I do have the heating on as well, at a lower temperature than I normally would but on nonetheless. As others have said, breathing cold air aggravates my lungs, plus I have arthritis in most joints and they get very stiff and painful in the cold. Think I’m built for a nice temperate climate really, with no extremes either way!
Im a bit late to this brilliant party. Lots of great ideas. I wear so many layers i sometimes wonder how I can walk around. Trouble for me as I was replying to Sassy above, is that I can feel fine, then suddenly realise that without having realised it I am shaking with cold. Think my body thermostat must be screwed as it often happens when the temperature has not fallen. Im thinking a heated throw would be best way for me to go so thanks to whoever suggested that one. Hope everyone's ok as its even colder than when Blackbird first put up this post
Hi 02Trees, I can suddenly feel cold and it's usually after eating. Was told it's because after you eat your blood goes to your digestive system and leaves your extremities cold (especially if , like me, you're thin). Does that happen to you maybe?? xxx
I am thin, Nula2, and really feeling the cold just now. Always have but its way way worse this year. Without wanting to be overdramatic, it almost feels like hypothermia. Your point about blood going to the stomach is right, Im sure. x
Oh that's miserable for you, and it's SO cold at the moment. I wear lots of thin layers indoors (thermal long sleeved vest with a thinner sleeveless vest on top then a jumper, cardigan and finally a body warmer). Take care 🙋♀️xxx
Hah!! This is what I wear:
A thin silk vest. A long ribbed men's vest which covers my bum. A cotton tee-shirt. A double layer long sleeved cotton tee-shirt. A thick black V-necked knitted sweater. A thick woolen sweater. A woolen fleece lined gillet.
2 pairs of high wasted knickers. Silk long johns. Jeans. Woolen socks.
AND IM STILL COLD and that's even with my dressing gown on top of the whole lot !!!!!!
Hope you're ok today x
One more thought - anyone heard of putting a candle inside two flowerpots whose widest ends are put together? Keep meaning to go to the garden centre and get some new ones. A friend on FB swears by this.
I’m confused, what’s that for? Is it heat? More information please! X
The terracotta of the flower pots gets hot and gives out heat. Ive not tried it and I think - see knitter's reply below - you would need to be very careful, have a stable base, not somewhere that could be knocked over.
But tempting if it works - getting heat from just a tea light sounds very attractive. But I am going to look up dangers.
