I’m hoping someone has had this done spacecat as I have them in one eye and was told they don’t need to be dealt with yet but the thought terrifies me. My friend had both eyes done and said she felt nothing and now doesn’t need glasses!

Both eyes done years ago (first one then the other after month/s), they will adjust the bed the way you like.

No pain at all, you will notice the difference for better in few days😏...only precaution is hygiene and using medicines as prescribed.

The intensity of colours and the sharpness of vision will live you surprised.

I had both done 12 yrs ago separated by a few weeks. I had drops to numb my eyes. Felt nothing and the result still lasts. The worst part was lying on my back without coughing.

Pete is due to have one cataract done on the 29th and the second one to be done on the 26th November. He’s very nervous but they really need doing. I’m keeping everything crossed. Xxx

Good luck to Pete for his operation. I am waiting for my cataract operation. Was referred by my optician last August 2021 and told 2year waiting list. I rang the hospital a few months ago and was told I will have to have aConsultation first and they confirmed I was on the list. Still waiting xxSheila 💕⚘

Thank you Sheila. Pete decided not to go on a waiting list and is paying privately. He’s very nervous but I’ll be there waiting for him after the op. He’s scared he’ll cough but the doctor has reassured him about that.

Hoping you don’t have to wait too much longer. Have a lovely day and a good weekend.

Love Carole xxx🥰❤️

Pete will be fine. My eye sight isnt that bad and was surprised I was told I had cataracts. I don't wear glasses only for reading .Have to wait for Consultation to find out . I telephoned and was told to wait for phone call re appointment so not a priority it seems. Apparently they are working weekends to catch up on the backlog. Its been 14 months already. xxSheila 💕⚘

I had both mine done last year: April and June. Yup, in anticipation it is scary, but it really — REALLY — is nothing to be scared about. You won’t feel a thing. It is weird, but an amazing operation. Within an hour or less I was able to see stuff my eyes had never seen before. I think we are all somewhat squeamish about eyes. The staff know this and do everything they can to make patients feel relaxed. Good luck. Xx

Hi Spacecat,

My mum has had both her eyes done just on three years ago now. Like you, she was very nervous beforehand but said there was nothing to it. She was very worried as she can’t lay flat but the staff were lovely and adjusted the operating table for her so that she was flat enough for what they needed but still comfortable. As Littlepom said, they put numbing drops in the eye, so she didn’t feel a thing and the results were fantastic! She could see things clearly almost straightaway. They did the second eye a couple of months later and she almost ran into the hospital in her keenness to get that one done too😄 She had to put eye drops in for a week post op both times but that was it.

Mum’s gone from wearing glasses and then contact lenses for many years to not needing anything at all and is thrilled with the results. The only trouble is I now get scrutinised when I visit and she is able to spot tiny specs on my clothes that I can’t even see without my glasses😂

Wishing you all the best for your op, TC x

had both eyes done 3 days apart last year and the anxiety beforehand was much worse than the procedure. It didnt hurt took about 20 minutes each time and had normal vision back within a couple of days

I`ve had both eyes done, about one year apart, with no problems at all. Live in France so had the choice of "varifocal" lenses. Result no need for specs either driving or for reading. Brilliant outcome.

I had the op 10 days ago. I hate anything to with eyes so was really worried about the it. I had drops to numb my eye. The wait for them to work was almost the worst bit. When I was on the operating table, what I can only describe as a sticky jay cloth, was placed on my face with a hole over the right eye. The procedure took less than 10 minutes and was absolutely pain free. The only painful part of the whole thing was when the surgeon pulled the jay cloth off my face - it was like a very sticky plaster!

I would recommend the op to anyone. It was definitely pain free and I won’t be worrying when I have to have my second eye done.

I was terrified and in pieces the night before my cataract surgery and on point of cancelling. My wife took me to the hospital and said the nurse he needs a sedative. She then sat by the door to ensure I didn’t try to escape.😀I then sat with several other people in a small waiting area after my sedative and we had drops put in our eyes. Some were having second eye done and saying what a difference it had already made to their vision. I was last in the operating area. Wor my own clothes and kept my shoes on to my surprise. Waterproof sheet put over me. Eye is held open by a sort of clip. The only sensation is of water running on your face. All over very quickly and clear plastic shield taped over operated eye to be kept on overnight. Eye drops 3 times a day for a month - luckily I had my wife to administer them. What a difference - hadn’t realised colours were now clear in that eye and I got impatient for second eye to be done 6 weeks later. That was a piece of cake - refused sedative offered too. When I think how worried I was pre procedure, I was an idiot.

hi, I had both my cataracts done last year, first one no sedation, but had the eye numbed of course, no pain whatsoever felt whilst they were doing it, second one the same, I too was very nervous, but couldn’t believe how well I could see straight after the operation, understand your nervousness, I was exactly the same, but would recommend it to anyone, it’s certainly enhanced my vision, good luck, wishing you well 🌻💐😊 xx

One of the best things ever for me having my cataracts done. As particularly at that time I was inclined to uncontrolled coughing, I thought the joggling about wouldn't be good idea, so asked if I could be sorted under a general anesthetic, which they did. Only one eye at a time sorted, but after a couple of weeks of drops and settling for each op, my sight is better than I can remember. Go for it, and don't worry.

Spacecat1 profile image

Was the sedative a tablet how long are you asleep does it help with coughing.

Lutontown profile image
Lutontown in reply to Spacecat1

Not a tablet, a total anesthetic injection. It does mean you have to lay about in recovery after the op., but that wasn't a problem for me. Other than the coughing worry, I preferred to be asleep rather than be aware of what was happening during the op.. I assumed that whilst you are under, coughing is suppressed.

Had both eyes done, under slight painkillers, few weeks apart, 13 years ago. No problems, warned surgeon might cough because of PCD, had short physio work on chest beforehand. Difference to sight well worth ops, and could renew driving licence being able to see required 21 metres. Good luck Jean x

I can understand your fear of having this done Spacecat1 , I will be the same when my time comes. Most times when having things done the first thing I do is close my eyes lol, well you wont need to and they numb everything anyway . I know a few people who have had this done and they have all said how easy it was and pain free. Will be thinking of you x

My experience is different and unexpected. Surgery itself was perfect, no pain or discomfort at all. The issue was at pre tests, the Doctor said "you will be having a distance lens inserted", zi asked "why". She said it was excellent for driving, I replied that I rarely drive! She then said it was good for theatre and cinema, Twice a year I go to theatre. My right eye does not need surgery. So I have one distance lens and one shortsighted eye! Visual imbalance has changed my life. The NICE Guidelines state "the lens type used for cataract patients should be discussed with the patient so that the patient has the best option to suit their lifestyĺe". This did not happen for me. The majority of patients are longsighted, therefore distance lenses are successful. I have been shortsighted for over 60 years. My advice is to discuss filly with a doctor.

hi Spacecat1

I agree with littlepom the worst part was not coughing, I also had both eyes done within a short time of each other, a few drops in the eye felt nothing. (NO PAIN whatsoever)

I chose being able to read WITHOUT glasses as I love reading, however, I need glasses to drive and watch TV.

The Consultant explained it would b one OR the other.

The freedom it has given me is wonderful.

Go for it.
