Has anyone had blocked ears, which is not due to earvwax build up and what was done about it. I have one ear that l can't hear anything and the other one makes crackling noises when l swallow. I have tried to sort it myself with earcdrops, but no good. It's been like this for a couple of months.

Really you should get this checked out. You say it’s not due to ear wax but actually you have no idea if that’s the problem! Ears shouldn’t be cleaned via cotton buds, although we all do it. But ear wax can be far down ear canal, too far down for regular cleaning. You need to get ears checked. Not sure where you live but in England (as opposed to Scotland) it’s doubtful NHS will deal with this but gp can have a look down ear. Boots opticians and Spec Savers sometimes do ear tests and may clean dodgy ears. But they can definitely check what problem is. Due to difficulties getting face to face gp appointments I think I would be ring those 2 options to see if they do tests.

I get very blocked ears. I've worn hearing aids for the last 15 or so years but had this since before then. My ears get very wet inside and I can only assume its part of my lung problems. Sounds daft but I find if I bend over (as if you're inspecting the ground in front of you) and hold that position as long as you can it temporarily helps. Also use a saline spray in my nose and think this helps too. I've been to ear, nose &throat specialists at hospital, they couldn't help but maybe you should ask your GP to refer you to them as a start. Good luck and take care.

I have PCD including bronchiectasis, and my only live ear gets blocked with mucus at times. I Nebulise twice a day, so inhaling steam with medication for about two hours occasionally helps sinuses and ear. I also steam carefully over steaming spout of kettle, sometimes helps. Many years ago a grommet was put in my left ear, within few hours it was totally blocked, but I had to wait 7 months for it to be removed by which time the nerve had been killed. I’m sorry cannot be more helpful, good luck! Jean

Hi Falcon68,

I take a prescribed nasal spray and antihistamine daily for allergies and find I get blocked ears (and nose) for weeks on end throughout the year (not too sure if it's extreme pollen, dust, mould etc?) . I take extra doses of my nasal spray which eventually unblock my ears.

I have bronchiectasis, small airways disease and allergic rhinitis.

One doctor told me the ears, nose and throat are all connected and affect each other. Maybe talk with your doctor about it. If your ears are clear then ask about a nasal spray, antihistamine or both and make sure they are ok with the medication you are on..

Hope this helps.

Hi Falcon68. I suffered too with my ears and got numerous infections and blocked ears. The nurse at my practice advised me to use earplugs when bathing/showering and "Dry Ear" spray after bathing. This just dries up any moisture left in the ear. It works for me, no more infections or blockages. Good luck. John

I have chronic sinusitis which causes my Eustacian tube to block. It is worth asking for a referral to ENT. The ENT consultant advised Neilmed use (nasal wash) and Budesonide added into the Neilmed. This has helped the sinusitis (and the Bronchiectasis a bit) and improved the blockage in the ears. I was down for surgery to release the fluid in my ears but it sorted itself out with the treatment above. They also checked my hearing and discovered I had moderate hearing loss and now I have hearing aids. The hearing test at the ENT department also identified blockage in the ears at first, but subsequent ones have improved.
