Thanks for that link and we should both as a nation and individuals do what we can to help these poor desperate people in their hour of need.Ski's and Scruff's x

in reply toskischool

Thank you. I hope no one minds my posting this, but I thought many here might like to help but don’t know how x

Who could possibly dislike you posting this plea for humanitarian aid to a country that is being invaded by an aggressive neighbour for no justifiable reasons.x

in reply toskischool

I can think of an ex member who would probably have reported my postas “political”. But you’re right, none of our lovely friends now would do so x

Thank you dear Hanne. I’ll contact my MP tomorrow and see what else I can do. Such desperate times for Ukraine. Xxx💜

in reply tosassy59

Yes, this’ll be my 2nd letter in a week! I’d like to see more sanctions, even though they’ll cost us. We have to stand up to this tyrant or he’ll be picking on the Baltic states next, with consequences for all NATO members of course

Thank you Hanne, I really appreciate the link. This should not be happening and obviously any help I can give will be done. Desperately sad xx

in reply toleo60

And frightening. He’s already threatened the use of nuclear weapons against any country which tries to stand in his way

leo60 profile image
leo60

I remember how frightened I was as a teenager about nuclear war. My kids don’t really get it, they just say “oh he won’t do it “ but Putin is a mad man and why Europe’s leaders even tried diplomacy with him ….. 🤷‍♀️ All that time wasted! Xx

in reply toleo60

I agree. I didn’t believe his protestations for a moment so goodness knows why some of these “experts” said he was too cautious, or had too much to lose etc etc. He’s an ideologue!

All those homeless families lining up at the borders with their children and grannies. Such a heartbreaking sight

We should stop money being sent to India from the UK .... this is simply being transferred to Russia as payment for armaments. Russia do not want Rupees from India - they want Dollars and Euros from Germany for their gas....if India think Russia will protect them from China - they have another think coming.🥵

LiveSalt profile image
LiveSalt in reply toAlbertisadog1991

I think Russia and China have just signed a 30 (?) year contract for gas to China, and China is buying grain from Russia in huge quantities, and probably Russia is banking on selling what's rightfully Ukrainian produce also, ha! Just like they used to under Stalin 🤨. One man has just turned the world's clock back 40 years.

in reply toLiveSalt

That’s exactly what he wants to do grr

in reply toAlbertisadog1991

And to think we’re reduced to scratching about for a trade deal with Modi!

Thank you for the information. It's terrible what is happening to Ukraine & they need any help that can be provided. Very scary situation!

in reply toJane2005

It is. I’m just hoping he might’ve overreached himself this time, and misjudged the mood of the Russian people too

Thank you so much for this information Hanne62. My niece in-law's mum & sister are in Obolon, northern suburb of Kiev where tanks are moving in & explosions all night. So terrifying for them

Thanks C, apparently whilst on the phone this morning all was quiet & sunny with birdsong but a few big bangs in the distance. Nephew & Sasha have been trying to persuade them to get out for weeks but they wanted to stay. Now its too late.

It’s all so sad and I hope they will be ok. Such a worry P. Xxxx💜

in reply topeege

Oh lord. I’m just watching the latest news now, swapping between cnn and bbc. It sounds as if Kyiv is on the brink now. The residents must be exhausted and their nerves in shreds.

It’s ironic that his justification for the invasion was that Ukraine is “ancient Russian lands” but he seems to have no compunction about murdering its citizens!

Thanks for the link Hanne, we all need to stand together on this x

I think most people feel very strongly that Putin can’t be allowed to win, not this time.

Blackcat99 profile image

Thanks, Hanne - will definitely act on suggestions. This is horrifying, like watching a re-run of Hitler’s invasion of Poland, and I can’t believe the laid back attitude of Western governments so far. This has nothing to do with political beliefs, just common humanity.

in reply toBlackcat99

Poland has agreed to take however many refugees want to go there. Also Hungary, I believe, despite Orban’s previous support for Putin (I expect he can see which way the wind is blowing & fears for his own position!) I hope other countries will do their bit to offer sanctuary to refugees too

I think 99% of us stand with Ukraine to put this idiot in his place. Its disgusting and upsetting to see the situation unfolding. I feel so helpless just watching on the tv. I see 1 Labour mp has received a death threat for backing the Russian invasion. Can't think where her brains are. Brian

in reply toBingo88

Oh, I didn’t know. Which one is that, Brian? There are naive (or just wicked) apologists for Putin everywhere, unfortunately. What a world.

Bingo88 profile image

I can't remember her name unfortunately. But can't understand anyone who would side with an invader of another country. Hope you have a good day. Brian

Thanks hanne. It’s an awful situation. X

in reply towatergazer

It is. Tonight there’s movement to eject Russia from the Swift banking system. This has been held up by self interest on the part of a few countries but it’s essential imo. It will affect ordinary, innocent Russians unfortunately but hopefully make Putin extremely unpopular, much more so than at present. Sorry, I’m rambling!

Thank you for this Hanne. It is so important for us to be aware of the people who have no control of their own lives. Grace

in reply toWalkwalkwalk

We forget humanity at our peril, don’t we, Grace. Already over 100k have left their homes behind, with almost nothing. I hope ordinary people in all other countries will support the Ukrainians with humanitarian aid, and let the politicians deal with financial penalties for the regime

Putin said he wasn't aiming at civilians but I think they would recognise a multistory apartment tower block which they hit with a missile today. He is a psychopath who's trying to hold onto power in Russia a lot of younger Russians are risking their lives protesting against his war! He will be a pariah hopefully sooner than later. I don't think he will stop at Ukraine and God help us all if he tries to take back the other old soviet countries as they are now members of NATO and we could be at war very soon

in reply toGlasgowgirl1947

Like all despots he’s surrounded by yes men who’ll only tell him what he wants to hear. Also he seems to have become isolated and paranoid lately, if the length of that table is anything to go by! I hear there’ve been more protests around Russia today. The young people are especially brave, as you say. If only the protests would gain momentum. Even better would be for the Army to refuse to fight. I live in hope

Thanks for this. My (reasonably useless) MP will be getting a letter.Did you know Lithuania has declared a State of Emergency? If Russia pushes through from Belarus to Kaliningrad the Baltic countries will be undefendable despite being in NATO since there will be no land access from Europe. A Lithuanian girl who lives here says her family is very worried.

in reply toteenieleek

No, I hadn’t realised that, til your post prompted me to google it! I hadn’t noted the strategic position of Kaliningrad either. Undefendable on the ground, certainly. Latvia looks to be at even more risk. I just saw a weapons expert on Sky, explaining what each example of military hardware is capable of. Absolutely terrifying, even though the guy was careful to stress it’s unlikely Putin will use some of these weapons. Well who would’ve thought Assad would gas Syrian children? But he did.

Thank you for the links Hanne

Sorry, everyone, I’ve become very boring, if not obsessed, on the subject of the Russia-Ukraine conflict! I’m going to get back to lungs now 😊 x

teenieleek profile image
teenieleek in reply to

Not boring at all! I had to get a map out too for Kaliningrad. I’ve been to all three of these Baltic states (not to Finland) and once you’ve been a place and enjoyed it, it becomes more personal somehow.

P.S. I’ve been to St Petersburg too and, selfishly, am very glad I have because the prospects for a visit in the foreseeable future are remote. It is a beautiful city and I would have loved to have seen more of Russia. Ah well..
