.y goodness leannah that's sounds dreadful. I would be wanting to know what it is. This parasite does not sound nice, it certainly needs more investigation. I do hope you get it resolved quickly please keep us updated. Have a good day and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

That sounds horrendous. I think you need an urgent referral to a Tropical Disease Hospital. I know there is one in Liverpool and London. Are you in the UK?

I'm in Staffordshire and have spoken to infectious disease on the phone I had to wait 3 monthes for the appointment by that time the problem was in full swing and I'm having palpitations and have blood in my sputum but coughing out worms and what took like eggs I want it to stop but don't no how I can help the situation

This is serious and I cannot believe how negligently you are being dealt with. Please contact your GP, show them photos of what you are coughing up and insist on a referral. Possibly A&E? Anyone who actually looks at this stuff must surely take it seriously.

My gp sent me and my 2 children to the a &e the week I thought I caught it but as it was so early and because she was scared it could be rat lung worm ..but when we got there they did nothing no tests nothing and sent us home , since then I've had symptoms from headaches blood in my stool and caught up blood pain in my tummy vomiting and no appetite or energy but the biggest symptom I've had is a feeling in my chest like a crushing in my heart then palpitations. It got so bad I called an ambulance one night and no ambulance came I waited 8 hrs and fell asleep ..since I've had an ecg and the day I went I didn't have the pain and also I'm having a monitor holster on for 24hrs now but as of yet I'm yet to have the feeling, I'm lost what it is or what I can do the infectious disease dr said he didn't want to give me drugs as there toxic but he hasn't had a sample or seen the pictures .and BTW I've sent out 13 samples in total with my gp and the lab keep saying they need re doing so that took up monthes waiting I think I've been going through this now since august

I've just coughed this up 10 minutes ago ..they are like segmented egg shaped strings ?!?!

This is just 3 coughs I've just had ..do you agree it's not usual sputum

This is what's stuck in my throat each morning numerous of them until I clear it all I feel it climbs up my throat from my lungs and asophagus

This isn't normal sputum I had my snail tested and it came back as a nematode ova seen in the lab result so it's some sort of roundworm larvea or egg??????

More of the same surely sputum wouldn't be in strings like this every single time I cough

They probably keep testing samples to monitor the level of any infestation.id ring gp tomorrow and tell him exactly how u are feeling - ask what tests + samples are indicating and ask for urgent treatment.are yr children infected?I'd be extra scrupulous with hand and toilet hygiene + dont share towels

leannah profile image
leannah in reply to Patk1

They don't seem to be having symptoms I was thinking at one point my 5 Yr old daughter could have it but she hasn't had any symptoms and it would be obvious like mine if she did im sure .yes I bleach my sinks they aren't allowed to touch our last pet snail and we use separate toothbrush holders and towels etc im obsessed actually that I keep everything clean for them

I forgot to say for monthes now I've been asking my gp for medication for this and sent her photos and samples in but she made me wait 3 monthes for a referral to infectious disease then I only got to speak with him on the phone. Its a big joke he sounded like he didn't think it could be anything from Africa but the snail was wild caught and imported(has since gone) but thats another story I was told it was quarantined and lied to by the kids I brought it off

What or who do you mean by infectious disease? Who did you speak to?

leannah profile image
leannah in reply to Jaybird19

I'm in the uk the department t at the local hospital the consultant at the dept of infectious disease..that is where my gp has referred me to..we don't have the same places to go to in the UK as in the states .these things aren't very common in the UK but are definatly getting worser due to no legal rules on importation of these creatures in the UK..I no in America they are not allowed to have or keep these snails due to the risk to environmental factors and infections but in hawahii they have alot of cases a year of rat lung worm and its deadly

You do need urgent attention Leanna and I agree with Katinka46. A specialised tropical medicine hospital needs to be examining you. I do feel for you and hope you get the help you need very soon. Xxx💜

I want it to stop im having palpitstion but I have to go for blood tests and xray on Wednesday I wish I could just get treatment ..how can anyone diagnose over the phone its silly

These are worms im coughing out too I've been on at the gp for help

I think I would go to A&E leannah. You shouldn’t be left untreated while you have a parasite in your lungs. Take photos and a sample of the worms with you. At the very least you will be given an X-ray and possibly a scan and maybe something to kill the parasite. I do hope you get sorted ASAP.

leannah profile image
leannah in reply to Fircone

I have a xray booked for Wednesday morning, I'm praying it shows up on it. I'm not having the obvious abdominal thing you would assume with a parasite and keep thinking to myself is it just mucus but then I think If so why do I feel a moving sensation in my nose like a tickle and when I touch my nose there was always a ball (singular) like these strings but just 1 in a tiny blob of jelly on the tip of my nose ...which is something I not had before. But also that was my first symptom then I saw little white worm looking things in my nose and coughing up when I had had my covid mask on .when I took it off they were at the entrance of my nose clear as day stuck to my nasel hair ...

leannah profile image
leannah in reply to Fircone

I went yesterday to the outpatient clinic to have a chest xray and also bloods taken ..I contacted the consultant who asked for me to get these tests done to let him nobi had had them and now awaiting the report ...

leannah profile image
leannah

Because of this I'm having chest pain and palpitations and now im not allowed to have my second covid vaccination because they think it could be pericarditis but im almost certain im having it because of these worms and I'm scared now I will get covid because I'm not vaccinated and I'm really vunerabke due to being house bound and having other illness its a crazy circle I feel I'm trapped in

Fircone profile image
Fircone

At least you have an X-ray booked. Once you have a diagnosis and start treatment hopefully your chest pains will subside and you will be allowed your vaccinations. I shall be thinking of you and do let us know how you get on.xxx

Hi There

Could I just add here that when you have normal lung disease like many of us on here have (bronchitis/asthma/bronchiecstasis) the sputum and phlegm are often very stringy, different colours and or tinged with blood. The thin strings of mucus are coming from all the thin tubes in the lungs, and they have that strange elastic quality, so you may have a normal chest infection ( and or sinus if it’s in the head as well) and the snail may have nothing to do with it. It would be unusual for giant African snails, which are sometimes kept in nursery schools, to be cross infecting a human.

Obviously I’m not an expert in Tropical diseases, but sometimes we need to look to the most likely causes first.

Good luck!

The snail was picked up from the wild in africa and tested positive for nematodes ..I understand and hope and pray that this is the case but its actually becoming a big problem among snail keepers now to catch these parasites I was lied to by the seller and told it was clear and quarantined but it wasn't

Hi I would definitely overplay it to the hospital to get the treatment you need, everything you have suffered since it started ,your worst experience just to get an answer.any kind of lungworm can be serious.

Have you looked at the American health site . CDC.? They have lots if information . There are a number of parasites to found in lungs and they cause other problems like intermittent diarrhoea and changes in blood cells .

leannah profile image
leannah in reply to Jaybird19

I had blood taken yesterday so I hope it will show any blood cell changes I also has a chest xray too I will keep you guys updated

This is the parasite ( the actual one off the snails body ) I've seen them moving and swirling upwards I feel it looks exacally the same to the worm like things I'm having too what do you think ?

This is the actual parasite I think I have caught taken off the body of the snail.

Why do you have these creatures ( snails).

The large problem snail I had the parasite off it was meant to be a pet but the seller lied to me and told me it was quarantined and ok to be handled by my children thank god they didn't handle it

The first day I had the large snail ..now gone to a new home and the rest passed away

So sorry you're having all this trouble. Can't understand why you have not already been referred for a diagnosis. Keep persisting- it's all you can do. They cannot discount the possibility that your children are at risk. Good luck.

Hello leannah,You clearly need urgent care. Before seeing anyone, would it be a good idea to collect a significant sample and show it as evidence. Also many ppl have simple microscopes for their children and they are relatively cheap to buy.Have a look through one.You wouldn't need great magnification for these samples.Perhaps even have a look through a good magnifying glass.Another idea, send a sample with an explanatory letter to a centre for tropical diseases.Provide your 'phone number for quick contact. I think that your samples should really encourage your doctor to take this seriously. Also any doctor's practice worth it's salt should have a simple microscope on the premises.Insist they use it when you bring the sample.Be sure to explain what you know about 5hese snails. Do some research so you are well armed.Do not let this go!!!Protect other in your family from contagion. Good luck and best wishes to you.

Thank you alunrob I do no quite alit about snail parasites and have been studying to find out information..I have a microscope but my son lost the USB adaptor needed for it. I'm really convinced that this is a nematode I never had these symptoms before or any nasal irritation and it's the same things all the time ..thank you im due to go for a chest xray this morning and have bloods taken butvhes testing me for schisomiaiasis!?! I'm sure that it's not this parasite but he is also testing my immunity and wants me to take a hiv test? I don't no why I don't have a partner or travel and gad one about 5 years ago whilst in hospital as a routine ..maybe it's a thing the infectious disease team do to every patient..I will keep you updated once I find out anything but these images aren't normal mucus ..what do you think I've added more from yesterday
