hi everyone hope you are all keeping as well as possible , ,,,, normally i don’t have a productive cough of mucus ,,,unless i’ve got a chest infection , ,,,but ,,,,approximately over the last 3/4 months i have had a LOT of rubbish on chest to ,,,cough clear ,,, no symptoms of a chest infection at all ,and the mucus is clear/creamy colour ,,,, i’m aged 75 and I have ,,,Asthma, Bronchiectasis,COPD, ,,,,,,,,,( as well as other conditions not related to my chest ,) ,,, Over the last 18 months like everyone else i’ve been much less active than i used to be ,,,,, i used to do my own food shopping aswell as going to the gym twice a week , that all stopped when COVID CAME TO THE UK , ,,, I don’t know if being less active and being indoors more has any connection how i’ve been the last few months , or is more a case that lungs have got worse , any advise would be appreciated,

Hello Nanny1086, I'm not sure what could have caused it, it maybe because we have been less active. Have a word with your GP or nurse about it they can advise you. Please let us know how you get on. Have a good night and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

Hello, i can sympathise , i feel the same. I’ve had 3 nasty bouts of flare ups in the last 18 months, no chest infection, just congestion and cough and breathing uncomfortable.I am sure it is because our normal lives changed because of covid being here. Staying in away from people and not being as active.

I hope you get relief soon, i am taking a linctus for my cough and honey and lemon in all my drinks.

Having to use inhaler more frequently too.

Take care, 🙂

I had issues a while back due to chronic inflammation in my sinuses, which caused a post nasal drip. It settled with steroid nasal spray which they prescribed long term. About 4 months after stopping the spray, I started coughing up copious amounts of creamy phlegm in the morning, which had been worsening over the months. Restarted the Monetasone nasal spray and it has settled it right down again. I also have asthma as well as pulmonary fibrosis and fused ribs with no chest expansion, which makes every cough painful. I have an inflammatory arthritis which also affects my jaw, and ENT feel

the inflammation is from the nearby jaws inflaming the sinuses. It’s reduced the coughing up phlegm by 80-90%

hi Maureen thank you for getting back to me , seems your health problems are far worse than mine ,,, at my next telephone appointment i’ll mention it to her about the steroid nasal spray ,,, i’m trying hard to avoid a course of steroids as i get no sleep at all with them , take care Maureen,

Have you tried antihistamine these help to dry up the mucus and give a little relief. I went on a low dose of Doxycycline for 6 weeks and this helped to clear a deep seated infection. Hope you find something that works, keep chasing your gp x

hi there , i am on long term antibiotics Azsythromicin , 3 days a week , ( have been for over a year now ) and i take an antihistamine tablet every day for my allergies , ,,, i’m thinking it could be a deep seated infection that a possible course of doxycycline could clear it up , ,,,infact I've got them as my rescue pack ,,, so i’ll start them today , thankyou for the advise , stay well , x

Not everyone is turned off by mucus, I was very amused by Professor Rob Wilson who in a video session on ERS said with huge enthusiasm: “I love sputum! I can tell so much from it!” I sent him my cartoon about sputum lots in which Kate mused about respiratory consultants love affair with sputum pots and how confusing it was as the pots looked like yogurt, mousse and icecream… confusing when Kate had mislaid her glasses. hi Katina ,,, i love your sense of humour,,, 😂 ,,, but i still find it very embarrassing when i have to take in a mucus sample to my health centre ,😚,,, x

That’s dreadful that you are struggling so much. The enforced changes to routine may well be an influence so l hope that getting more active again restores what is normal for you. I love Katinka’s take on it and must find the cartoon.

I am on permeant ABs but in spite of that I have the same symptoms as you.Use steam and your flutter (if you have one) to help shift problematic Mucus do it twice or three times a day.

I don`t want to aggravate my throat or chest by overdoing things.

hi , i’m sorry your struggling aswell , i to have a flutter devise ,,,and at the moment i’m not using it as it’s no struggle to move the mucus ,,,, it’s just it’s not like me to have such a productive cough ,,,without infection, keep safe and take care ,

Ni Nanny. I was in a similar situation where I knew I had alot of debris in my lungs but could not cough much up. I spoke to my Respiratory nurse and I was prescribed Salbutamol Nebuliser and Carbocisteine Tablets taken Daily x2. These have sorted out the problem and my airways are much more clear. Might be worth asking your GP about this. Good luck :)

hi , apologies for the delay in my reply , i’m pleased your problem has been resolved,,,sadly mine is still ongoing ,,,very tiring,,, i’m on my 2nd week of doxycycline antibiotics hopefully they will work ,, i’m trying desperately not to take steroids as i never get any sleep when i’m on them ,I think it has to be due to being inactive and staying indoors ,,, as for 13 years i went to the gym twice a week ,,,church on a sunday ,, did my food shopping and had a day out with friends every week ,,,,, since covid started back in march last year ,,, ive only left the house when i’ve had to for dr appointments or a short walk , ,,, i normally only have a productive cough when i’m ill with a chest infection ,,,, so this all new ,,, another appointment next week ( phone) ,,don’t know how she can examine my chest over a phone ,,, 😳 , sorry for rambling on ,,, stay safe and stay well , 🎈

Do u do lung clearance to shift the mucous? Ive bronchiectasis, asthma, allergies.this year ive swapped to prescription antihistamine for rhinosinusitis, and just take otc loratidine if needed.I clear my chest approx 2hrly to shift mucous.whn ive an acute flare up/infection,the quantity is awful..i hope u do take steroids if needed - personally, inflammation in my lungs does accompany infection x
