Wow you got your FEV1 up from 68 to 93%. That’s good. Your FEV1/FVC ratio is likely close to the LLN so likely you wouldn’t get a diagnosis of COPD with those figures.

No I was confused when I found out I didn't understand this fev thing I do now my fev1/fvc is 68% thats what I thought but my fev1 alone is 93% well it was Feb 2020

My response still stands, I’m 52 and the LLN of FEV1 / FVC for my age is 67.6. Have a look at this and you’ll see; btw the NHANES III seems to be the preferred set of values for spirometric interpretation today. cdc.gov/niosh/topics/spirom...

Hi Bryan ,how did you manage to improve your FV1 ,please tell me what you did

bryan45735 profile image

I gave up smoking

My fev1/fvc ratio 68% its 2% from normal my fev1 is 93% doctor says I will probably have a normal reading next time

Superzob profile image
Superzob in reply tobryan45735

Calling the ratio "2% from normal" is a bit misleading. The "normality" is actually a range which applies to 95% of people - 5% of people will be perfectly healthy outside that range, and some people within that range will not be. It's really a guide to the most appropriate treatment (which is what actually matters) and, if that improves your lung function, then that can only be good news!

Damn good figures there Bryan and with an FeV1 about 75% better than mine i think i know what i am talking about.I imagine the last time you visited us folks told you all about healthy living, exercise.no smoking etc etc and nothing has changed in that direction and those figures sort of indicate you have taken it all on board and it's working for you.Well done!

Now all you need to do is work on the health anxiety issues you had before and crack on with life, even with my figures i am not anxious because i believe in positive thinking and just ploughing through life as if there is no tomorrow.

Keep well and you will live forever.

Thankyou, yes my anxiety is a huge problem I do suffer from dysfunctional breathing thats what the doctor has described it my breathing doesn't feel right because I'm thinking of it 24/7 my doctor told me he isn't concerned im not on any inhaler ect I still walk alot there's nothing else I can do to look after my self im waiting for cbt therapy for my health anxiety, doctor did say when I go for a spirometry next it could Possibly been a normal reading now I don't understand that one minute I have mild copd next minute I don't

skischool in reply tobryan45735

Perhaps now is the time to stop worrying about it,try and think of the more positive things in your life and the things that you enjoy doing.concentrate on those and i am sure if you try hard enough your health anxiety will almost disapper overnight.

👍😊

Hi, Bryan. Diaphragm singing and controlled breathing exercises can really help with dysfunctional breathing. The British Lung Foundation has a page where you can find the groups nearest to you. If still isolating or not in the UK, you can find some great free resources on You Tube too.

My Consultant told me 12yrs they are only numbers. It's your attitude and the way you live your life is important. Dont concentrate on numbers just be Positive .Sheila💕👍

There are some whose condition is less advanced than mine ,I have severe COPD. It was severe 12yrs ago also. They are in a wheelchair and on 24/7 oxygen. I go out every day and enjoy life and am grateful for each day. I concentrate on what I can do and not what I cant . I am not interested in running a marathon only in getting some excercise.

There is always someone worse off so be grateful, that's my attitude. Positivity attracts Positivity, keep away from anything or anyone negative.

Enjoy your day, the sun is shining looks like its going to be a lovely day.

xxSheila 💕💕🙌🌞👍

Hi Sheila how come there are people who are less advanced but in wheelchair ect x

garshe profile image
garshe in reply tobryan45735

Because they are feeling sorry for themselves and choose that road to go down my Consultants words. I have got myself off oxygen and managed my anxiety through sheer determination.

You have to be Positive and live life to the full . I was diagnosed 12yrs ago with severe COPD but still going strong. This is me at 77 photo taken last week.

Sheila 💕👍🙌🌞

Enjoying life to the full.

Thank you I know when first diagnosed I did like others and Googled COPD. Big mistake as it said life expectancy 1-3years. 😱I nearly died there and then.

Well here I am 12yrs later and all because I chose to live my life .

I know there are others who unfortunately are wheelchair bound and on oxygen and my heart goes out to them.

There are others who dwell on their condition and are very negative.

We all get our off days but I always remember the ones worse off than myself and try and make the most of every day.

Have a lovely day in the sunshine xxSheila 💕🙌🌞👍

I'm dwelling only because one minute I get told that wow 93% fev that's fantastic thats not even copd you may never progress this is from a British lung foundation nurse then I get told its dysfunctional breathing just because my fev1/fvc is 68% which is 2% off a normal reading so what is it copd or not x

garshe in reply tobryan45735

I am not qualified to give a diagnosis . That will have to come from your Consultant. Good luck and try and not concentrate on your condition. This is causing you Anxiety and your breathing will cause panic attacks. Sheila 👍

Well I dont read posts with links attached. I can make my own decisions. Some on here think they know it all, spend all day researching and then posting it all on here,.... so Boring. Better they got out and about and lived their life instead of doting on their health issues. Life is for living, live it.

.hope you are well. Enjoy the sunshine xxSheila 💕🙌👍🌞🌞

I suffered with Health anxiety and terrible panic attacks during Lockdown. Last Dec I was prescribed oxygen for 16hrs a day as my oxygen dropped to 77. This really upset me but I knew it was because I had been shielding for 10months and no excercise.

I had the Baywater Oxygen man to give me a longer tube for my oxygen so I could walk around my house and out into the garden.

Every day I walked a bit further and my oxygen level increased. I am now off oxygen and my oxygen is 94/95.

I go out every day walking around shopping centres to get my excercise where I can talk to people and I love it.

I have learned to control my anxiety and my Panic attacks have stopped

It is all about overthinking a situation, thinking about it makes it happen. I would look at the stairs and think I cant climb them I will be out of breath .I now breathe in on first step and out on 3rd etc slowly but surely. Remember to keep breathing and not hold your breath

Anxiety is all in the mind and causes panic attacks. Also remember you cannot die from a panic attack. Also remember COPD is progressive not Terminal, you can control the progression and slow it down.

Good luck and stay Positive. xxSheila 💕🙌👍🙌🌞

Bryan, I too have struggled with serious Anxiety related to my breathing, I too have similar numbers to you. On thing that really helped me was this video

youtu.be/mq25NrkzG44

If you practice daily it really helps to train you to stop taking those deep breaths / sighing which never come leading to the circle of dysfunctional breathing and anxiety.

Just been listening to video, thanks for putting it up ck101

Hi Bryan, those percentages are very good as others have said. If you have copies of your spirometry results, you can check info on the spirometry calculator here:

patient.info/doctor/spirome...

I always do get copies of my results, just so I can compare year to year and for further clarity.

Having said that I've not had a spirometry test for 2 years now because of the covid situation, my doctors are still not seeing patients on routine checks apart from bloods (and annual cancer checks at the hospital)

Keep well and breathing easy.

My Respiratory team are still working at hospitals. I had appointment in March ,June and I have another next week Sept 1st..I can also telephone them anytime and they will call to my house. Fortunately I am ok but knowing they are there for advice is reassuring. My appointments are for oxygen checks as I dont need the oxygen anymore but they keep a check every 3 months. Didnt need the blood test in June as my oxygen was 94/95 so back on track . Hopefully same this time as feeling great .

Good luck and stay Positive .stop dwelling on the numbers as they change every time.

Enjoy the sunshine it will do you more good than researching .
