Met Office issues first ever extreme heat warning for UK

The Met Office has issued its first ever extreme heat warning for the UK with temperatures possibly reaching 33C in western areas.

The amber warning is in place for much of Wales, all of south-west England and parts of southern and central England.

“Many areas will continue to reach heatwave thresholds but the amber extreme heat warning focuses on western areas where the most unusually high temperatures are likely to persist,” said the Met Office’s chief operational meteorologist, Steven Ramsdale.

The warning is the first under the Met Office’s new extreme heat warning service launched in June.

Hi 2greys.....I'm certain that I'm not alone in longing for the temperature to drop - personally the low 20°C's is my optimum for comfortable living. Maybe I'm a party pooper? 🐿🌈😷.

Well if you are a party pooper then so am I, I am more comfortable with my breathing at the low 20 C's as well.

That's amazing. It's been a three-jackets kind of day here today (+ two pairs of trousers and a woolly hat)

Where do you live?

We live in Wales and got an e mail saying about a heat warning.

You may get a blink of sun around 4pm today and a scorching 12 degrees. It’s a bummer for you when the rest of us are wondering how few clothes we can get away with without frightening the horses!

Well the sun didn’t shine but it did get to 12 degrees 🏝 With the heater and dehumidifier on, it’s just managed to get to 17 degrees indoors. A veritable heatwave 🤣

Unusual temperatures?how soon they forget ,1975 and 76 ( especially) were consistently hot temperatures over weeks , hose pipe bans ,car washing bans. grass was turning brown yet not one climate change activist reared their heads , climate change is a money making scheme ,ive no doubt the earth is slightly warming as it does after every ice age and perhaps human activity is helping this warming , but to me until they can quantify what is natural or man attributed they need to stop this scaremongering , we have seen through our age differences in the winters from our childhood to now but it this down to us ? Or natural phenomenon, im very sceptical when specific points in time are used to bolster a certain political agenda but im probobally wrong but let's start classifying climate change against weather patterns.when sceptics are shut down and ridiculed i am always pessimistic, follow the money I say ,its there you will see corruption .Signed daves brandy and port ,lol 😆 dave left the building half hour ago

in reply tosoulboy118

They should stop scaremongering and exaggerating shouldn't they?

Absolutley and provide imperial data over hundreds of years and not selective short term data like the famous hockey stick example ,which is now discredited, all I ask is people do some critical thinking and search the data yourselves and not accept data from interested parties .

in reply tosoulboy118

Golly, are you a climate change sceptic?

Lol , follow the money and you're experience of weather in our life time .

I think 2greys ’ summary of the problem the world is facing is better than anything I could write. The most recent example is the floods in Western Europe

But some people agree with you. Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro, Nigel Lawson. Some of them eg Matt Ridley even make a living out of it.

Simply put. The UK is an Island on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean our climate is modified by all that water. The Gulf Stream Drift is slowing down so that is having a cooling affect on the water, counteracting the effects of global warming in the UK, so we see less of the increase in the temperatures. Go deeper into the continent away from the Atlantic and boom, record temps are there Siberia above the the Arctic Circle has seen temps of 35°C, Canada has seen close to 40°C, all records. The Arctic sea ice is less than half of what it used to be. It is so easy to be fooled about what is happening in the world because the UK temps are being tempered by the cooling water that surrounds us.

The Permafrost in Alaska and Siberia is melting and release millions of tons of Methane into the atmosphere the same is happening in the Oceans, Methane Hydrate a crystalline form of methane is also turning into gas adding that to the atmosphere. Methane is around 20 times more powerful than co2. The warmer it gets the more Methane is released which increases global warming that produces more Methane ie the tipping point has been passed for Methane, it is in a runaway mode. GLOBAL warming, not so much UK warming, is very real.
