Soft bite sized diet

My Other Half is coming out of hospital and needs to be on a soft bite size diet, so no bread or chewy meat. Has anyone else been put on this diet and wondered if they had any ideas what to eat? Doesn’t help my OH is a fussy eater in the first place 🙄.

I was on a liquid diet for 4 months followed by a soft bite sized diet for many more months. It helped when they referred to it as ‘fork mash-able diet’ although be mindful of ensuring its cut into the right size.

Think of things like - mashed potato, tuna mayonnaise, egg mayonnaise, baked beans, spaghetti hoops. You can melt butter and/or cheese into stuff if someone needs to gain or maintain weight.

Bread is hard to swallow and sometimes potato can be too but I ate potato mashed really well with baked beans mashed into it which changes the consistency.

Soup is always good because you can bulk it up with meat or lentils or whatever.

Eggs, porridge and thick custard - not together, of course!

Fish - cod and haddock - poached in milk is super soft. I admit I ate a lot of fish fingers!!

I was given a sheet of examples which I can send if it helps?

Thank you crashdoll for your reply, that’s really good to know and some good tips. However, I’ve just found out he’s now on a level 7 easy to chew diet so that makes things a little easier a few more things he can eat but still on the mashable with a fork idea. Thanks once again x

Similar diet when recovering from Crohn's surgery. Previous answer very much what I ate, added was a treat of chocolate eclairs, cut up very small, after removing most of the pastry, needed chocolate in some form, and éclair choc easy to melt.

Hi BusNut, if your other half has been told to follow a specific diet when he goes home I would suggest asking to be referred to a dietitian (hospital based if he's still an inpatient).

They should be able to provide you with some advice and leaflets etc, and also some ideas and more specific suggestions suitable to his food likes and dislikes.

I had this after a hautus hernia repair plus osophegas tightened. I found poached egg with toast (no crusts) and soup with toast. Or mashed potatoes with meat cut up small and steamed veg. Careful with bread as too much can give indigestion or get stuck. Plenty of cold or warm drinks too.
