Could a simple pill beat COVID-19? Pfizer is giving it a go.

While the focus has been largely on vaccines, you might have also heard Pfizer is trialing a pill to treat COVID-19.

It almost sounds too good to be true. Indeed, the results are very preliminary—but it's a promising approach.

Where most antiviral agents we've tried to treat COVID-19 target the inflammatory and immune response resulting from infection, Pfizer's pill directly targets SARS-CoV-2—the virus itself.

Mounting our defense against the virus

Much of the illness associated with COVID-19 is due to the intense inflammatory and immune response that can occur with an infection. The most successful treatments so far have targeted this overzealous immune response.

Wow good news

I believe the main drug discussed in the article is the mRNA treatment that’s been mentioned over the last few months. Sounds potentially promising for the majority, but many people (although the number involved is still less than 300 in total) that have had anaphylaxis to the Pfizer with no allergy history have been told to avoid mRNA vaccines, so it makes me wonder if we’d also need to avoid an mRNA based treatment. Would be a bit sucky if that is the case and it works!

A major boost to distribution and storage problems as a pill I would think.

Interesting however with the issues surrounding mRNA vaccination I am wondering if these will be repeated with a treatment Saying that any ammunition which helps prevent the more serious problems of covid is welcome.
