Hi all, I know we are asked not to be political so I am simply stating this as fact.

It just seems odd that - yeah I know we're a lung site but we have lots of non-lung posts too - that the most massive change in the Western world in recent years has just taken place and no-one is acknowledging it. Barring legal challenge outcomes of course, but even the Republicans are going on record saying that no fraud happened. So . . . Biden is president elect of the U.S.

Hope everyone is enjoying the sun we have here in Kent.

Perhaps but Black people in the main are happy. Van Jones, Black reporter on CNN which we have been glued to in recent days, was almost sobbing with emotion while trying to announce it. It means a lot to many Americans, but it remains to be seen what will change. First ever woman AND person of colour as vice-president elect. That has to mean something.

A Jamaican woman VP elect.

My best friend in all of the world is a Jamaican lady whom I met in 1982 when she came to Florida from Jamaica with her fiancee and helped me in my home. She went on to become a senior nursing sister and formed the first nurses' union in the US.

Anyone who is a child or closest friend of one of these awesome breed knows that America must get ready to

Do As It Is Told!

Go Kamala!

OMG yes I found Van Jones piece very moving. Absolutely agree with your post 02. I thought Biden’s speech was very statesmanlike and uniting and I just loved Kamala Harris’ phone call to Biden when she was out running.

It is sad political posts are invariably shut down, as many are interested in politics and it effects most areas of our lives. They do tend to get heated sometimes, which is a shame.

I wish Joe Biden and Kamala Harris well - a huge task.

I saw that on the News this morning Jean. Many are happy I suppose but Biden has a huge task on his hands to unite his troubled country. I wish him well.

It’s a bit overcast here on the south coast but we’re happy enough. Enjoy the sunshine. Xxx😘

There being a woman of colour as Vice President elect is, I feel, a positive step. I too hope Biden can unite America successfully, as you say a huge mountain to climb. Hoping also for some acceptance of and undertakings on climate change.

I am looking forward to Trump stopping his petulant foot stamping and childish ways ;) xx

Yes I am pleased that America seems happy with the president they have elected. The scene of masses of them celebrating is very touching and I am glad so many of them are relieved and can now look forward to a better future.

I think it's great that the vice president is female, and black as it gives hope to all of us women and hopefully will go some way to unite the racial attitudes in the USA.

The interesting thing is that almost half of voters in the US voted for Trump. (I was not one of them.) But I sincerely hope that we find positive ways to become a more united country.

Same seems to be true in most elections. How many times have I heard the winning party say ' The British people have given us a mandate....' when, in truth a good 60% have voted for someone else entirely, but of course that vote is split.

Stayed up all night being a bit of an election junkie. The free world heaves a huge sigh of relieve and keeps its fingers crossed that Joe Biden totters over the finish line. Whether Uncle Joe can unite a country deeply divided remains to be seen.his hands may be tied to some extent by still having a Senate controlled by republicans and many of his well thought out policies may be thwarted by them.i hope for the sake of the world this doesn't happen and also uncle Joe can forgive our leaders for leaping into bed with the Ex president in the interests of our so called special relationship.

Serious Ski's? not for long. :) x

Not quite over yet it is 48/48 as I reply, with 51 seats needed for control, 4 uncalled seats to go:

Please think a bit deeper. I live in the states. The virus is out of control here. We now have an incoming President that has stated covid 19 is his main priority. We need that for our health sake & possibly our life. This virus isn’t slowing down. I’m very vulnerable to die if I contract the virus & I feel less anxious & a sense of hope that we will have a Govt that works together as a team. Not chaos & a hostile workplace where very little got accomplished as there was so much infighting & fear of losing ones political positions.

Exciting to follow and very confusing - what a strange electoral system they use if you don't need to win the most votes to win! They now have a very similar situation to us here in the UK where the country is still split (fairly evenly) over Brexit.

DJS6 profile image
DJS6 in reply toSgt_Pepper

You also don't need to win the most votes to win a general election here in the UK!!

in reply toDJS6

Correct, and I think Blair (in 2005?) gained fewer votes but many more seats & hence easily won that election.

Huge relief for some normality & congratulations to Joe & Kamala! 👏💕

If only for covid reasons, I’m relieved for the US & especially our vulnerable American members. Watching CNN yesterday, they had a graph showing the virus is out of control in virtually every state.

I often watch CNN & really like Jake Tapper & John King, their analysis of domestic & global issues is excellent.

My opinion of Trump & his policies isn’t relevant here, but it’d be a mistake to think he’s going anywhere. He & his family have enormous influence in the GOP and, with a few honourable exceptions, most senior Republicans have still declined to criticise his blatant attempts to undermine democracy. He remains a very dangerous man & will doubtless now be hellbent on revenge. So, although I was ecstatic at Biden’s success, I remain very worried. My hope is that the IRS gets him for tax evasion.

O2Trees profile image
O2Trees in reply to

Hahaha - tax evasion, like Al Capone you mean Hanne? Ive heard on two different current affairs programmes that people are suggesting he may start a radio station - e.g. Trump News. I agree he wont go easily. The fame and the adulation of his base are addictive.

Good to see you here. I know things havent been easy for you but I hope you're going on ok (whatever that means). Take care, xxx

in reply toO2Trees

Was just improving but then had shingles to add to my woes, & because of covid it was very difficult to get prompt treatment, which with shingles is essential or it won’t work.

This is what gets me about the “I won’t wear a mask” libertarians, they’ve no idea the effect the virus is having on normal nhs services! Oh no, much more important to preserve their “right” to carry on as normal & lock all the vulnerable & elderly up. But if they’re in a road accident or have a cardiac arrest, they’ll expect a hospital bed.

I’ve just been watching more about Biden-Harris policies & am greatly encouraged by their determination to waste no time, but how much can be achieved if the Senate stays red, who knows. If you haven’t seen it, there’s a good article in the Guardian today about the wonderful Stacey Abrams theguardian.com/us-news/202...

We are all in this together! And yes, we with lung issues should be most grateful to have more scientists to help !

I have a friend who I have known for over 30 years,. When it came to "Brexit" we are on opposing sides so we don't discuss it although she will occasionally give her views on what is happening so I just don't respond. We don't discuss politics either, we decided long ago not to, it is not worth losing a friendship over. I just hope that after all the rhetoric that has gone on both sides in America they can some how come together for everyones sake.` When Trump won in 2016 he insisted that the voting couldn't be

rigged! That is all I am going to say on that subject.

Not taken as political. As you say you were just stating fact.

I am delighted with the result. Looking forward to seeing what Biden and Harris can achieve. Regardless of politics the response of Trump has been a huge embarrassment to not just the republican party but the whole country. Will be so happy when Trump and his family go.

Annie31 profile image

I am not a Trump supporter by any stretch, but I do find it odd and disquieting that a country the size of the USA could not come up with two candidates to compete for the role of President in a more appropriate age group. I was listening to a prominent member of the Senate yesterday who was also thinking and saying the same. He was of the opinion that presidential elections would be better undertaken by those in their forties and in his opinion the best presidents they have had were JFK, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, all in their forties.

I have family and friends in the US and they are conflicted over the result because they support both Trump and Biden. It's because they live in different states, lead different lives and vote according to their beliefs on how these men will affect their lives - much the same as here I believe!

There's much in the media to suggest that Trump doesn't get on with different world leaders for one reason or another, but I also read a list of world leaders who Biden has crossed with in his previous role and seems reticent to deal with because they don't follow his line of thinking! This list was quite long! He thinks Boris is a clone of Trump - why? I happen to think Boris has played a clever game with Trump to keep him on side and surely that is what diplomacy is all about. Teresa May did the same, nobody is telling me that these two people felt comfortable in his company as intelligent human beings but they did their job! Her Majesty had to do the same, entertaining him, but these things have to be done whether it's liked it not.

From a personal point of view I find it difficult to reconcile that Biden wants to deal with Iran when this country is holding a young mother of two on flagrantly trumped up charges (excuse the pun), not once but twice and imprisoning her in other words holding her hostage as a political pawn in their sick game of political football. What civilised country allows people to be charged for the same offence twice? Nobody from whatever super power has any effect on this country, Hunt, Rabb, none of them have had any effect on getting this poor woman out of that backward thinking country. It makes no difference who you support from whatever country you deal with -- do you think Harry Dunn's family will get justice just because Biden is President, I don't think so! The little man has no impact anywhere in the world and the sooner we all realise that the better we'll all be!

I'm not as bitter and twisted as I sound and I apologize, but just very disappointed in all the unfairness and injustice in the world.
