UK dropped WHO guidance on alcohol-based hand sanitisers before lockdown.

Alcohol-free sanitisers used in some of England's schools could take up to six times as long to kill the virus. Official advice on what hand sanitiser to use against coronavirus was watered down by the government 10 days before lockdown and no longer matches World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.

WHO says hand sanitiser should contain at least 60% alcohol to be effective against COVID-19 and has published tests showing it takes 20 to 30 seconds to kill the virus on hands.

A Sky News investigation has found hundreds of thousands of bottles of alcohol-free hand sanitiser, which take up to two minutes to kill coronavirus, are being used in schools, homes and businesses.

I think due to shortages at that time a number of compromises where made. Any sanitiser was preferable to nothing would be my guess.

In which case they should have done a U turn, there has not been a shortage for months now, it is freely available on public transport in shops etc.

I went out yesterday to buy all the kit I need to start my singing group up again when our local church hall opens. Had no problem buying 63% alcohol sanitiser in the discount store. Nothing in the major retailer with the big blue sign.
