Hi Woofly, I can't help conerning the price of a stair lift but I am under the impression that there are a fair few pre-owned ones about. One that is still in good condition may be an alternative option worth giving some thought to. Pat

Cheaper if you have a straight stair if you have a small landing it costs a lot more to put in a curved rail. Refurbished ones should come with a warranty, some companies let you rent the stair lift.

I got a refurbished one from a company on ebay. They great with all the questions came and put it in for us no mess showed how to use it. Got a little seat belt if needed. Worth a look. I paid £500 with fitting.

You got a bargain there , it usually costs that just to put one in secondhand.

My husband has disabilities from spinal injury and fell down our stairs March 2019. So we realised we needed one. Phoned the company on a Wednesday morning. Chap came that afternoon, very thorough, thoughtful and sensitive. Van turned up at 7:30 in the morning on that Friday, my husband came down on it an hour later. We could have had a reconditioned one but opted for new. £2500.

Thats about average for a straight stairlift.

Thanks. That’s reassuring, we just couldn’t face checking out lots of companies.

I just read your post 2 months ago . Ì did not know they were that much. That has taken my breath away. I will need two as my house is 3 floors. Live on 1st floor and have small turn at top of each staircase. This week my knee has given way and cant put any weight on it. Have to talk to doctor tomorrow if I can.

You can get them through social services, but it can be slow and probably means tested. A re-conditioned would be much cheaper and likely to be very good. Sometimes the previous owner may not have had it very long. Maybe had to go into a care home? They obviously have to be hugely safe and they are simply on a sturdy rail thing that is attached to the stairs. I wasn’t surprised at the price when you see what have have to do, and the mechanics involved. I am sorry that you are having mobility problems and I hope you manage to get something sorted.

Have you checked with your local social services.

It may be that they would fit a stair lift for you. Depends on how urgently you need this. Lots of delays due to Covid. But worth asking.

I will look on the Councils webpage, but I doubt VERY much if I could get any help where I live. If you are living in council accommodation everything is provided! but if you have worked your socks off and managed to save enough for a house, NO HELP what so ever grrrrrrrrrh

It really depends on your Council but the ones I know of would not view owning your own home as a barrier for services and adaptations.

If you live in social housing you could see if they have aids and adaptions budget especially if an OT has completed assessment for one

You may be eligible for funding for a stairlift and possibly other adaptations, although I anticipate quite a wait. If you google the name of your local area and ‘adult social care’, you should be able to find contact details.

Did you know you can rent them? Mine is £350 a year inc service repair and fitting. Try North East Stair lift on line. Good luck

When I had mine put in a couple of years ago it was £875 or thereabouts. I got mine from a local company.

I wasn’t keen to have one put in but Mother insisted, I’m very naughty and rarely use it, but it’s great to take things up and down the stairs!

I had 13 stairs, on a straight run. I bought a reconditioned one from a St. Helens firm for £500 fitted with 6 months guarantee. The next year I had to have it refitted at my daughters house. He charged £140 because it needed slight adaptation.. it was in very good condition. I have been very pleased. There was a Liverpool firm who cameout to quote too. He said £450, but had to wait for them to find one.

We used a company called Bronte Stairlifts who were brilliant. Our stairlift for a 13 step straight staircase cost £475.

We got quotes from Stannah and Acorn and they were both charging about £3000 and a charge for fitting and delivery. Even a second hand one was going to be about £2000. The man from Bronte delivered our stairlift from 250 miles away in Yorkshire and installed it all for that amazing price of £475. It was like a miracle. That was over a year ago and our stairlift has been going strong since then. We literally saw the exact same model in a catalogue that a salesman left at our house and it would have been thousands of pounds rather than just a few hundred. I can't praise Bronte enough.

I will see if they deliver to the S. West. Thank you very much for the info

Hi Woofly, we are just in the process of having a stair lift fitted.

Ours is a curved staircase and we had to have a socket fitted for the stair lift and a smaller radiator in the hallway, to give clearance for the stair lift chair.

We went through Age concern who use Handicare to fit the stair lift.

Age concern get some money for us using them, which is good.

Total cost £4200, but we have 2 year guarantee and they come out 365 days a year if there are any faults.
