My prescription is take 2 x 3 times daily when I have a chest infection and at other times as required for any mucus building up, usually 1 to 2 doses daily at the moment.

For myself I find they work within an hour.

You do need to drink plenty of water with them to help with the med to help keep the mucus thin.

It could be you still have a chest infection or covid-19 virus after affects ?!

Maybe chat with your doctor, regarding the excess tiredness and other symptoms / the repeated flare ups.

The carbocisteine won't stop any flare ups but they will help (along with water) to keep the mucus thin and more easily coughed up.

An Edit: - I guess carbocisteine does help avoid flare ups by helping the patient to cough up phlegm that could, ( if left in situ) cause an infection.

You need to eat as healthily as you can with a chest infection and at other times to help your body immune system cope with the infection.

Try not to stay in bed all day every day, get up for half the day to help try and avoid any complications such as pneumonia.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi I have them 3x1 a day for 6yrs continuously they help enormous with plenty of water a day 2litres approximately .the tiredness goes after a while once you get used to them and have a pattern of clearance of mucus to relieve your lungs of all the mucus build up.I hope you feel better soon and find some relief with the carbocysteine.

Carbocisteine 2 capsules (375mg) 3 times a day for my elderly mum helped enormously and worked quickly (again keep hydrated) - (Apparently they can be single dose 4 times a day if not so needed) but I can't see on the side effects tiredness and lack of appetite on the leaflet that accompanies the pills. Do you do the Active cycle of Breathing exercises or use an acapella to bring up the phelgm? Try not to swallow it but put it in paper, if possible also(not possible for my mum) as that can go into your stomach and possible cause issues. But I think really you need to speak to a Doctor to find out the cause.

Would tend to agree that carbocisteine unlikely to cause tiredness & lack of appetite. Maybe speak to a chemist or doctor. So easy to feel down with a chronic illness. If you feel up to it try to distract yourself... I usually make some cakes.. But if feeling poorly you should seek more help. Good luck!
