Any info on Drugs that interfere with asthma and COPD?

I have an asthma-COPD overlap. Several drugs seem to worsen my breathing. Proton pump inhibitor (stomach acid suppression) is one of them (sometimes even antibiotics). Though the interference of asthma drugs with heart disease is well documented, the interference of other drugs with Lung disease is not well known. Any experience and expertise in drugs that interfere with breathing will be useful for the community.

I used to take Proto Pump Inhibitors as reflux was a side effect with corticosteroids. I now take Slippery Elm Bark capsules instead, which work really well for me.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will explore the option. May I know what PPI you are on? Do they affect your breathing?

I used to take Omeprazole but not happy with the risk of Osteoporosis with long term use. I cannot remember whether it affected my breathing or not. It was actually suggested to me on this forum :)

Ibuprofen can cause breathlessness in some people.

drugs.com is good for checking interations and the information leaflet that comes with the meds you are taking should list possible side affects. That's not everyone will experience all listed side affects, some people don't get any side affects at all.

Thanks for the info.

Most of the sites provide a list of side effects from the official leaflet which pretty much comes from the trial study in a particular group. I am in for the crowdsourced info as my side effect is not on the list.

Indeed, changing the drug seems to be a much easier option.

I take pain meds regularly following an RTA in 1977. My GP has prescribed me the receptor specific NSAID Etodolac as I have problems with the cheaper standard ones like Naproxen and Ibuprofen. I do take omeprazole to buffer stomach acid too, but make sure I have a very low salt diet to avoid hypertension as the drug is potassium-losing. My GP took me off beta blockers as soon as I was diagnosed with COPD as they interfere with the beta agonists in the inhalers I take.

Hi, don’t know if this is helpful but my doctor said I couldn’t have beta blockers either for the same reason but has now prescribed me one as he said there is now a “new generation” of beta blockers which are ok to take.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I had a similar experience with Ibuprofen. My GP said it's alright to use beta-blockers as the lung delivery of beta-agonists is pretty much local.
