The introduction of standardised packaging for cigarettes in the UK, combined with stricter taxation measures on cheaper cigarettes, has led to a significant fall in sales for cigarettes, according to new analysis from researchers at the University of Bath.

By analysing sales data over three years from May 2015 to April 2018, the researchers from the Tobacco Control Research Group found that pre-legislation, cigarette sales (calculated by individual cigarettes) declined on average by 12 million a month; after legislation, this decrease accelerated sharply to 20 million a month.

I know a number of people who buy their tobacco abroad in the E.U and never buy any in the U.K. They have two or three cheap holidays a year and buy local tobacco at a fraction of the UK price. It will be interesting to see how many have given up as Covid as completely cut their normal supply.

Hi there 2greys and as an ex-smoker, I found the post and link you provided, very interesting reading. It seems that the UK Government (for once got it right and jumped on the bandwagon), following Australia's actions to plain packages, but advertising all the consequences of smoking and the damage it does. It's 3 years since this action was taken and although making your own roll-ups has increased, people are not so interested anymore. Can you even do it whilst wearing a face mask?😂😂😷😷 ..... That's meant as a joke!! 🐿🌈

It would be interesting to know the statistics for countries that brought in plain packaging but where smoking is still socially acceptable and quite common
