Time to Man-up?

โ€ข25 Replies

I'm sick of hearing of toilet rolls

Don't you remember when

It used to come in boxes

Mainly used by men

So lets bring back those manly days

With backsides made of leather

Who used a loo out in the yard

No matter what the weather

It seems that we can't post pictures anymore so you will have to follow the link to see what I had in mind. theguardian.com/artanddesig...

Yes, it was like wiping your backside with scented tracing paper!๐Ÿ˜‚

Yes, and the thought of it triggers memories of the aroma it had.

Your post is very ambiguous CDPO. Which aroma were you referring to?

โ€ข in reply toCateran

That is very ambiguous question, why don't you say what you mean, before or after. ๐Ÿคฃ

Oh, I was attempting to be fastidious Don, as ambiguity is always nuanced, like my sense of decorum, before and after a visit to the khazi...

Ha ha. The aroma the paper had obviously. The clue in the aroma IT had, not the other.

From memory, the Aroma was a disinfectant smell, it was quite unique and I donโ€™t mean in a good way,

I also remember at school in the mid 70s to the early 80s they had an even less luxurious, ๐Ÿ˜€but similar toilet paper minus the aroma, but I canโ€™t recall what that brand was.

The Isal stuff was like tracing paper, could be dodgy if you had the trots.

โ€ข in reply toCDPO16

Those in the know used to keep sheets in their pockets and keep crinkling them up. Without going into too much detail, they were much better to used after a week or so. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Well, I wasn't in the know sadly. It would be a very handy tip now though if these products were available in the absence of comfy bum!

Outside toilet? Bloody luxury!

Outside toilets at my school (clitheroe) had rectangles of newspaper at first.then we got bronco. But 6 toilets shared one roll. We had to pass it along under the partitions. With about 350 children wanting to use them in playtime / dinner time there was always a queue. Sometimes the toilets got full. I donโ€™t think washing hands was heard of then ( early 50s) about 56 we got indoor toilets and washbasins.

Amazing we all thrived in general, I loved that school though. Our teachers had fireplaces and would make our milk into cocoa on cold days thanks for bringing back memories

Hi Don. There is a dictionary somewhere on line, of euphemisms for toilet terminology. Hence my nuancing. Oh what larks, Pip!

When I was a kid dad was a postie and ours wasn't Bronco or Izal but each sheet was stamped with Government Property - can't imagine why :) . It was useful as tracing paper and for playing combs I seem to recall.

My very first job was with the post office and I always wondered why there was never any paper in the loos!๐Ÿค”

I know he got around but I don't think he got north of Watford so probably not him but a kindred spirit :)

I worked for the GPO long enough to know that everything was traditional. If it happened at one office it happened at them all.๐Ÿ˜‚

I will have to find my fan . Thanks Don

I dont remember the bronco but i do remember the outside loo across the yd at my grandmas. It was a plank with a hole ,across the the top of what i suppose was a nightsoil loo. No flush. There were 3 houses round the yard but what I do remember vividly most is the smell of one of the neighbours an old lady . A witch to a child , Actually identified that smell over 75 years later when i opened the bottle that i bought for sterilizing the coronavirus- it was surgical spirit. The witch appeared Was she drinking it --- or using it for rubbing alcohol fori her aches and pains
