Breathing propels everything we do--so its rhythm must be carefully organized by our brain cells, right?
Wrong. Every breath we take arises from a disorderly group of neurons - each like a soloist belting out its song before uniting as a chorus to harmonize on a brand-new melody. Or, in this case, a fresh breath.
Amazing things our bodies.....so much we take for granted ....things like blood pressure changes automatically when we stand.
I am aware sometimes how my breathing pattern can change, when I am stressed for example. But I can also consciously calm and slow my breath if I try, but to think that our brains are doing the needed adjustments unconsciously is amazing.
I have just ordered a new book on breath work, I will wait and see if it helps .
I learnt the other day at pul rehab class that your shoulders also govern how your lungs function. There are muscles there that do that , so not just deep breathing to tummy .I find myself sitting hunched up tensed, and try to relax. I obviously need some relaxation classes as well.
Interesting that the report mentions breathing disorders in autistic children. I was diagnosed with ASD 18 months ago (a little late in the day!) and coincidentally I've noticed how sometimes my body forgets to breathe.
