Coronovirus - Should asthmatics and COPD sufferers be taking precautions when we are out and about? We are told that masks are being snapped up at pharmacies so how are we supposed to be dealing with this hazard?

We’re keeping an eye on the news and making sure we use a light scarf around our mouth/nose, hand hygiene is a must as is disposing of tissues properly. Other than that, we’re carrying on as normal.

Try not to worry too much. Xxxx

Hi Hun, I was never able to Buy any Masks at Pharmacies 2 years ago, so I went on Amazon and Bought two Boxes (100 each box)of Disposable Blue, I have used them and are part of my Staying safe along with Hand Anti Gel. You will read all sorts of advice, I just have mine with me all the time, Especially at GP & Hospital waiting Rooms. xxxx

Yes, that's a good idea, keeping and using masks if visiting surgeries and hospitals. People may laugh at us but our immune systems are very open to picking up things easily. I haven't thought about using a mask as yet but I'm following the news closely and keeping abreast of health bulletins, and following their advice regarding hygeine

Exactly, Hacienda! These things we must do during ordinary times to keep ourselves well. J

I take precautions in the winter chest virus season anyway. As I work in a tourist destination I have withdrawn for a couple of weeks because we are having Chinese visitors. People in my town are generally concerned solely because there has been no stop on tourists coming from affected countries.

So glad you decided to give it a swerve for a while. My sis lives in York, which is also a tourist spot and they have many students from China. As you know the first positive case was in York. Do you remember the first H1N1 outbreak (swine flu) in 2014? 9 possible cases were reported in the paper, as being in hospital, with only one testing positive. That was when I was staying in YorkWell it was me and it was horrid. When I got home and walked into my GPs he looked at me and said “I might have known.”

Think you have defo done the right thing.

Love cx

Yes I remember the swine flu. Horrible. No I'm not taking the risk.

There is a huge amount of search results concerning medical face masks, they will only work to stop the spread if you are already infected . The only ones that will work to protect you would make breathing all the more difficult and have to have an airtight seal around your face, not suitable if you already have a respiratory condition. Personal hygiene and avoiding crowds is really the best you can do. Search Link:

My greatest fear would be schoolchildren who get exposed and carry it back to their homes, especially if they have siblings that attend different schools. The result from that happening is totally mind boggling in how rapidly it could spread. Fingers crossed that it mutates, quickly, into a less harmful strain and not a more deadly one.

True! I have four sons four daughters all grown adults with their own children. I have 18 grands. They are my biggest fear. Saturday I drove two hrs to visit my son and four grands. As I approached the city my son texts me...the kids are still feverish and puking.😳. Now honestly, my son is 42. He knows my condition...or does he? I didn’t stop by. It ended up a wasted trip. Why didn’t he tell me the night before? Just gonna let me take my chances? He is my wife’s son from a prior. He misses his Mom so much. So my wife had to explain it all to him again. It’s like they cross their fingers and hope the kids won’t be showing symptoms and just let me in a germ storm. It seems people don’t understand alpha 1 and my being stage four!

It is universal problem with people. Even my partner forgets that it is serious illness, perhaps my own fault because I don't complain and just get on with doing things. I do get a bit fed up with the " Don't you look well" whilst feeling totally worn out.

I can't get out anyway, visitors to my house are;-

Tesco delivery

District nurse

Practice nurse

Pharmacy prescription delivery

Young neighbour who runs errands for us.

Postman

Every one else I contact on the phone.

:-)

So we can't really do any more to protect ourselves.

Hand washing and try to avoid touching your face anywhere is advice generally given to prevent the spread of colds and other viruses. Those with weaker immune systems should take additional precautions and perhaps discuss appropriate precautions with your doctor who is most familiar with your current state of health. Staying away from crowds is also advisable when possible or practical. As the say error on the side of caution.
