Being proactive or just plain gobby

Back in October 2019 I started all the signs of a flare up. I suffer from bronchiectasis and bronchiolitis obliterans. Suddenly my chest hurt, mucus became thicker than usual and was a real effort to budge. I checked my oxygen level, down to 88 and peak flow was 100. (normal 94/96 and 120) So got out 'the big guns' ciprofloxacin and took a dose then off to bed. Woke a little later covered in nettle rash. stopped antibiotics and got an appointment with my gp.

Gp prescribed doxicyclone as a one off but said permanent change must come from consultant, gp contacted hospital.

I got a letter saying I'd hear soon, I didn't so rang hospital, was promised a call back, nothing, rang dr again eventually got another 1 off week of doxicyclone as rescue,

I finally saw consultant 03/01/2020, told him I was very unhappy being left without rescue pack it being winter, flu season etc.

I checked yesterday and... Doxicycline has now been added to my repeat prescription list.

I dread to think how long I'd have been without rescue meds if I hadn't been so gobby.

Neither my husband or I drive so although there are out of hours drs, hospital etc the time and energy it would take to get seen, explain my needs and collect prescriptions would be horrendous.

So for once I did nag and moan and it paid off.

It does pay to moan at times but very frustrating to have to keep

chasing up people. Xxxx

Yes. That's why I did it when I was well following the gp's prescription, I didn't want all that to do if I was unwell again.

Not gobby... just proactive and assertive. A lesson I must learn!

Remember, when you stick up for yourself you are also acting for others, the shy, nervous and to ill to speak up for themselves. If we push for the treatment we should be getting we are reminding doctors of what they can do for all. xx

Well done you. I'm afraid that it is fact of life, especially with bronch that we have to be very proactive and vociferous in sourcing the right treatment. I hope that you are back on an even keel soon

Well done Wheezyof for being proactive!

Being unwell and trying to chase consultants, consultants secretaries, registrars is so stressful and can make one feel very low and that no one cares, it is an absolute minefield to say the least!

Don't get me wrong, once one does finally get the care they deserve it can be amazing, but when the NHS get it wrong, it is the pits!

I am pleased to hear you got your rescue pack now and it is all finally on record, mine is also Doxy for my bronchiectasis, Cipro did something wierd to all my body muscles!!

I had the flu jab in September and am on my second chest flare up already, I usually find it's the same thing every year and the jab does nothing to prevent me getting sick, happy days!

Stay well X

Hi wheezyof,

So frustrating to have to go through that. I hope your meds are sorted so you don’t have to worry again.

It’s hard enough dealing with a flare up without the added stress of what you experienced.

Hope you are starting to feel much better now.

Good wishes.

Well done. But it’s not nagging or moaning just reasonable persistence. Good for you.

It pays to be gobby wheezy. Glad you got it sorted.

We have to be proactive and speak up. It is hard at times to do I know. But if not we are the ones who suffer. Good on you wherzyof.
