Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Hi all

I have severe Bronchiectasis and colonised pseudomonas and I’ve been referred for a course in Pulmonary Rehabilitation. I was wondering if anyone else has done this where they live and Dis they find it useful. I want to exercise but I get very breathless and the respiratory physio I got to says that with this course I will be able to breath better and manage exercise. Wondering what all you lovely people think 🤔

Thanks

Hi Michaela - I cannot remember anyone on this forum who has been to a pulmonary rehabilitation course who has not benefitted and enjoyed it. It is some years since I went to one and it was really helpful and nice to meet other people who needed the same kind of help. The people who ran the course - respiratory physio, OT and nurse were so supportive and watchful so that no-one did more than they could safely do. There was also a follow up testing after a year. So, go for it!

I did the course at the beginning of this year.

I had the same concerns as you,but they assessyoucarefully and keep a close eye on you..

There’s a load of education which is really useful.

My husband used to come in for the education,he found it useful,as did I.

When the course finished theyofferyou12 weeks free gym ember ship.

That was good.

I signed up for the gym.

I try togotwice weekly, even if I feel rough. Need to keep my body in some short of shape.

Don’t be intimidated by the superfit.i just go at my own pace, however slow it is.

I have a rare lung condition- NSIP.

I Did find that there was a lot of emphasis on COPD,as it’s more prevalent, but the course is good for anyon with a lung condition.the education and advice are invaluable. Go for it,wear trainers if you’ve got any.

I did one a few years ago now. I would say the exercise part was excellent but the talks were very much geared towards copd. Some were useful but no mention of lung clearance and abs were advised as 7 days.

It may have changed now and may also vary from a post code point of view but I feel there should be a PR which takes bronch much more into account, as I believe they do at the Brompton.

That being said you will benefit greatly from the exercise and you might find the talks more useful than I did.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi ... I see a respiratory physio and she has referred me and yes she feels that the talks wouldn’t be that useful for me as tbh I’ve done a lot of it with her over the last two years. She said I don’t have to do them but the exercises would be good for me. So if I can get the time off work I will give it a go! It’s just a pain that it’s in the day! 😔I wish they would facilitate things.l for people that work, as yes I’m poorly and very at times like us all but working keeps me getting up every morning and living 😁

The pr course. I went on had loads about chest clearance

It’s what Hopefully what keeps us well.

If you can get rid of the sputum it’s not a breeding ground for infection

Yes I fully realise the improtance of lung clearance, having had bronchiectasis since babyhood.

As I said in my post Oshgosh PR varies and I can only go on the one I attended.

I am glad your PR course appeared to be much more enlightended.

Hi Michaela I am the same bronchiectasis with pseudomonas, I did pulmonary rehab and I did find it useful I felt better after it but I don’t think it made my stats any better but it did help my breathlessness. I really enjoyed it and really felt the benefit after but it is something you need to keep up, which isn’t always possible when you are ill. You take it all at your own pace. I also learnt a lot and got many tips. Worth having a look. X

Thanks patsy that’s really helpful I get very breathless and the congestion isn’t so much a problem as I take meds for those and they work 😁 do you? If I can get the time off work I think I will go as would like to exercise so I am lose weight and the consultant was positive about it ☺️

I don’t take meds for it but I am struggling to do a sputum test for my appointment in december so if I mention that he may give me some. I don’t work as I am retired but they wouldn’t ring me to tell me if it was cancelled so I went there and one of the nurses would be there to tell me to go home. It was at our local health centre but depends where yours is going to be. The health centre would cancel the room not the other way around. 😡. Good luck with it x
