Here's something to think about the next time you put a cigarette to your lips: The skin around those lips is going to look older, faster.

You're also more likely to get bags under your eyes sooner. And jowls. And more wrinkles around those lips.

Researchers in Ohio studied the physical differences between the faces of nonsmokers and their twins who smoked and found confirmation of a long-held belief: Smoking does indeed age you.

Hi 2greys ,i've pressed the "like" button and thought to myself,well I don't actually "like" what your post was about but I'm afraid that it is so very true! Alas I'm a victim of all that you've mentioned but I hold only myself responsible(or me being irresponsible in my younger days/years). Well, I’m nearly 60 smoked since I was 14ish (blame boarding school!)

I don’t have one single wrinkle or bags under my eyes.

Guess it’s my good genes whoever they came from.

Anecdotally, that's been known for some time and the reason is nicotine inhibits the proper absorption of oxygen from the blood thereby causing the skin to age quicker (because it is 02 deprived) .

So on top of risks of cancer, COPD and gum disease, you loose your looks too.

It really is such a stupid habit.

Of course it’s also well known that sun worshipping ages the skin too but I’m supposing these twins had similar lifestyles.

As a clone myself I am able to speak from comparative personal experience. My twin died twenty years ago from cancer. Our lifestyles were very different. My brother smoked and drank, I did not. The nature/nurture analogy comes in here although we grew up together as mono zygotic siblings, later separated by marriage and occupations. It goes without saying that I am very conscious of the effect of genes and their impact in our lives, as well as culture and mores.

We two shared so much in our childhood, memories which cannot easily be undone by the passage of time. It has taken me two decades to get used to not being a clone. Your article is apposite for me in that deeply internal sense of childhood love and bonding
