Inhaler change again!!

Hi all, had an AN appt today, quite overwhelming really & just shows how we don’t take all the information in in one go.

I thought it really was my asthma overlap not being controlled but it seems it is the mild end of moderate emphysema (shocked!!!)

Now changed to fostair100/6 twice a day & spirive respimat once.

Anyone on similar, did it help?? Advice gratefully received 😀

Vx

Hi, I have emphysema/asthma overlap. I have been on Fostair for several years and found that it does help me although I know that it doesn't suit everyone. When it was first prescribed it was about a month before I felt the full benefit. I also have Spiriva respimat but can't honestly say that I have felt any benefit at all from that although, again, I know that some find it beneficial. I hope that they help you.

Thankyou for your advice, i’m hoping it helps.

Kind regards, Vx

I'm on Fostair for my Bronchiectasis. It was changed from Seretide several years ago. I can't say it makes any difference for me really.

Hi, i’m hoping it helps. Could they not try you on something else? Vx

How do they know if it's your asthma or emphysema? Did they explain? Hope it works for you! 🤞😁

I thought it was more my asthma, apparently fev1 results at 65% put me at the mild end of moderate...so confusing...i’m just getting my head round it 🤦‍♀️

do you have some trouble to talk? i am also 65%,but they kept saying i have asthma. i have trouble to talk loud.

Vee70 profile image

I have asthma overlap, i don’t have any trouble talking, my family might wish i had!!

Hope things improve for you, i have been told to gargle/rinse mouth straight after, worth a try.

I used the 100/6 for 2 1/2 years, now on Fostair 200/6 for a year (higher dose of corticosteroids) because of a high Eosinophil count. It definitely helped me to work full time and I will be off sailing again for a week in October. My FEV1 is 28%. As said by CDPO16 give it a month to start working to full effect. It doesn't suit everyone though.

Thankyou, so much helpful info, i’m praying it helps....don’t think sailing’s my thing, but would be nice to feel better & book a few days away 😀

Sailing, it was just to give you an idea of just how useful it can be, if it suits you. Not a miracle cure, all you can do is give it a go and see.

I usually take my husband to consultant appointments.he functions as an extra pair of ears.

Often I am concentrating so hard on 1 aspect of my diagnoses that. I miss other bits.someof it is due to lupus fog i think

I was changed from Sirdupla to Fostair had terrible reaction and side effects. Made my breathing worse, rash on bottom of legs, and terrible panic attacks. I stopped it myself and my respiratory nurse agreed it was Fostair caused the problems. I am now back on Surdupla. I have taken for Spiriva for 8yrs and no problems. I know quite a lit on here had problems with Fostair but it might be ok for you. Any side effects stop it immediately and contact your GP or respiratory team. Sheila.

I use Seretide 500 and was put on Spiriva Respimat a few years ago when my asthma was not controlled. It felt really weird when I first took it, because in the spring/summer when my hay fever kicked in, I realised how ill my allergies actually made me but my asthma was controlled. A few years down the line, I find my COPD is now kicking in during the summer. OSA has now been diagnosed, so I will be getting a CPAP next week - just in time for starting uni! 🤗

Oh wow you’ve certainly been through the mill. I hope everything settles for you. Good luck at uni x

I've just moved onto the same medication as you and since changing to the Fostair inhaler, I have noticed a big difference. I am far less breathless although I do have a persistent sore throat, not sure if its linked. Hope you find the same benefit.

Vee70 profile image

That’s good to know, thankyou.

I think i could cope woth a sore throat if everything else gets easier.

Wish you well 😊

Asthma & mild Bronch. On fostair for nearly 3 years now. I find it utterly brilliant so much so that A. I rarely need ventolin & B. my fragile thin skin - from Seretide usage - is almost back to normal. Changed my life 😀. All the best with it. P

Ooh sounds promising, hopefully i will get the same results.

Nice to hear positive news, thankyou 😁

PS I always gargle with water both before & after using.

For me it was Seretide that gave me a husky voice & sore throat.

Weird how not one suits us all

Results depend on the individual. I have had asthma since I was seven years old (71) now and COPD approx 12 years. Am on Spiriva, which helps. Was on Seretide and it was changed to Fostair which made my lungs much, much worse and made me feel totally psychotic, with panic attacks. Back on Seretide now. I find exercise helps more than anything else. Good luck.

Vee70 profile image
Vee70 in reply toAnnieLouisa

I heard about panic attacks from somebody else, after reading advice on here, i will certainly know what to look for. Seretide didn’t suit me!Thankyou, hope you stay well 🙂

Vee70 - do you use a spacer with your inhalers? I exercise at the hospital and have been told that the spacer is much better because the stuff in it gets into your lungs better than not using one. Also I rinse my mouth after using my inhaler.

I am on Spiriva Respimat, Symbicort and Ventolin. None seem to help and have never been changed by pulmonary doctor. Have been told I have emphysema with asthma overlap, but I just feel that it is the emphysema that bothers me most. I'm beginning to suspect that nothing really helps emphysema much. Do others feel this way? I would switch in a minute if I thought another inhaler might do better. I believe my stage is moderate.

Vee70 profile image
Vee70 in reply tochallny

I am just trying to find the right meds to hopefully bring some relief.

Have you been back to see if they can give you anything else? So many inhalers, i’m determined to exhaust all avenues. Only 49 with a 10yr old to look after, i need to be as well as is possible.

Good luck
