Heart attack at 49!

So i just thought i would update you lovely folks.

After an ambulance being called to my work on thurs, after a couple of days feeling as though i had tight chest (as usual) then awful pain in head, chest & overwhelming dizziness & pins/needles.

I was admitted overnight.

So today i went to my gp to find out if i needed a sick note etc, also to find out why i had been given certain meds, i took my mum as i knew i would get emotional.

Only for her to say that i had actually had a heart attack!!!

She assured me i am on all the right meds, awaiting an angiogram. I survived as i’m 49!! Smoking caused it (have now stopped)

She was, like me, more concerned that my asthma is still so unstable.

I have been signed off for 2 wks, review booked for 20sept, hoping to be referred as i’m apparently on the highest regime at surgery level.

So sorry for long post, just this has all happened since may 😢

Wow, what a shock for you. At least they sound on top of things. Hope you get sorted later this month and keep positive. I too have my emotional moments. But thats ok. To let these emotions out. Keep us posted how you are doing all here for you BRIAN

Omg Vee that must have been a shock, cant think why they wouldnt have told you this is in the hospital and gone through your meds with you. Good job you stopped smoking, so now it is onwards and upwards. Take very good care of yourself x

Hi, yes it was a shock, i saw 3 consultants at the hosp, all very lovely....for the few mins!!

Sadly it was left to my gp (whom i’d never seen before)

Who’d have thought that my initial Copd/emphysema would be taking a back seat!!

We haven’t corresponded previously but I feel I must write to you today.

The first thing that came into my mind when I read your post was how wonderful that you survived without knowing what was happening and that the docs have caught it and you have the right treatment.

That must have been so frightening for you.

Do take great care of yourself whist off work and concentrate on resting.

I hope that your asthma is soon well controlled and that your follow up appt goes well for you.

Vee I did look at your profile before I posted and saw that you have 3 lovely boys. I have 2 (though now they are much older than yours) and I too was a single parent.

Trust me when I say that your boys will sustain you, support you, and surprise you.

I am so lucky to have such a supportive family, currently in the process of moving back into my mum’s. We only moved out in feb!!

My eldest son still lives there, so at least i will have people on hand to look after my youngest.

He needs to be 10, not needing to be stressing about me xx

You went to the hospital, were admitted, had a heart attack, were discharged, went to your gp to find out you had a heart attack? What was the hospital's problem? THEY couldn't tell you? Is it part of your Official Secrets Act? I wish you all the best in your recovery but if it were me that hospital staff would hear a few choice words from me. God spare us over here (U.S.) the "benefits" of socialism.

Sorry, but the exact result in Charlotte, NC, USA. Exact same dilemma. Only difference was I owed 21,000. afterwards. That almost gave me another heart attack.

Yes mrmelley radical capitalism has been known to induce cardiac arrest,especially if you can't afford the transportation to your insurers hospital. x

I'm not complaining. After paying my monthly insurance fee of 1200., insurance took care of 8,000, so I only had to pay 13,000. Not bad when my yearly salary is 32,000.

😢 I have never minded contributing to our medical system in Japan even when I was healthy, because I suppose I believe medical benefits are and should be for everyone. Even those who haven't two pennies to rub together. I have never heard anyone complain about it either. Our cousins across the water in the U.S. pay astronomical amounts for medical care. 2.8 trillion just to be clear

If the American health care system was to become an independent economy It would be the fifth largest economy in the world.

The price of medication is not regulated by the government. It is up to the individual insurers and they don't seem to do very well at it. Doctors make money by prescribing treatments. Lots of treatment does not necessarily mean good health care.

I'm not going to go on about it, but I am rather tired of the smugness of some putting down the system of another country when the stark reality is there is a lot to be said for their own flawed system. Now I am tired and slightly disgruntled (but not at you dear mellyme ) .

Hear -hear you brilliant young lady. You know more than the majority of the cousins. I shall stall the authorities for at least another week. Just don't give them ideas about me paying for their insurance. And I'm hoping the poor workers on your construction sites have some decent medical options.

I had a heart attack a few years back. Was rushed to hospital. Surgery performed. (Insertion of stent) was kept for several days. My bill: NOTHING! (Private insurance.)

Good for you. In U.K. ambulance to hospital, surgery, transplant, tests whatever cost is also NOTHING. Not too bad I think. I'm sure your insurance also costs NOTHING. Enjoy your day.

I'm 52, healthy BMI, reasonably active considering the job (I walked several miles a day to load and unload cars) and four years ago was still doing the John O'Groats- Land's End-John O' Groats bike rides in 10 days for charity.

A 30 year love affair with the ciggies resulted in a diagnosis of stage 4 COPD late last year. I had a heart attack in Feb this year.

I'm slowly getting back to it but side effects of meds plus COPD don't make it easy. In my case there were no real clues beforehand, no alarm bells rang so no ongoing treatment, in a way the heart attack triggered some positive changes and medical intervention.

I have mild copd but very unstable asthma. All since May this year....time to slow down, which i struggle with!!

I had Cardio physio quite soon after but only recently started pulmonary rehab which I find isn't challenging enough, while I appreciate it has different aims and the range of clients is huge, eg a chap of 85 with two new hips whilst I'm 52 and fairly active it can't be right for the two of us to do the same routines. I have asked for the referral to a council subsidised gym/swim membership with tailored programmes. It starts straight after the physio ends so I will have had cardio, pulmonary and gym/swim without any lapses. While I can I'm jumping at the offers, my health won't improve but I'm hoping to slow down the descent and maintain a quality of life as best I can.

I had a horrible pain in my back between the shoulders felt like muscle. Went to A&E kept me for observation next day I collapsed heart failure. Came around few days later with only 15 percent of the heart working. I'm now 57 and after bit of a hard time with trying medication I'm pleased to say that I I'm alive and kicking. Be positive be brave and most of all be kind to yourself. My heart is now working normally and my asthma much more controlled happy days 😊

Crikey, that must have been a scary time, so glad you’re feeling better. I luckily got a cancellation with AN tomorrow, so hopefully can get some more advice & am going to push for a referral.

I’m hoping tomorrows appt will bring some clarity & hoping to get referred for further asthma treatment.
