Passed out?

challny profile image
28 Replies

I have this thing going on where I sometimes feel as though I'm going to pass out. Mostly when standing from a sitting position. I never have actually passed out. Oddly, when I was young, in my early 20s, I passed out a few times for no apparent reason. One time I face-planted in a restaurant. Never went to a doc back then. Kind of scares me now. With COPD (emphysema), nothing surprises me anymore.

It might be an idea to speak to your doctor and tell him what’s going on just to be on the safe side. Hope you’ll be ok. Xxxx

Thanks, sassy59 I don't know what it is, but it's kind of scary. I just went to the pulmonologist last week. She seems to think I'm doing wonderful, but that's not how I feel. I really like her, but I'm beginning to wonder. Hope you and Pete are good.

Hi you might have low blood pressure as this can cause this. Usually this is a good thing to have but standing up suddenly can cause you to feel a bit faint. x

As hypercat said it could be low blood pressure. Getting up slowly from lying down or sitting gives more time for your body to adjust. No harm in getting doc to check it out though.

Thanks for all the replies. I actually have high BP, for which I take meds. I just don't know. My breathing is not good either. Just saw my pulmonologist last week. Did 6-minute walk, breathing test and chest x-ray. She checked me out with her stethoscope. BTW, I DO have COPD. They say moderate.

Hello challny .

My mum has high blood too. She passed out in a supermarket last winter. I will tell you what I told her. No rushing about, everything slowly please. 😃😊xx

I suspect your HP meds are causing this. Most people's blood pressure varies during the day, and if yours has reached a relatively low level for you, then the meds might just kick it over the edge. This is very difficult to judge and predict, and you obviously need to be careful when standing up, but might be worth asking your GP if you can reduce the HP meds a little to compensate.

Do you mind if I ask how many meters you did in the six minute walk test?

challny profile image
challny in reply tojackdup

jackdup Sorry, not sure. I didn't even realize that they kept track of that. All I know is that my 02 reading was 99 percent when I walked in the door, and 95 percent after the walk. I didn't have to stop during the walk.

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply tochallny

They do as far as I know, but your O2 only dropping to 95% is certainly good.

jackdup I know it's good; that's why I'm so perplexed that I'm feeling so bad. Good FEV1, good 02 sats -- why do I feel so bad?

In what way do you feel bad?

A doctor or nurse can check your blood pressure when you are sitting, and again when you stand up. I have seen it done with patients in hospital.

I can't stand for long without feeling faint, but now I can feel faint if I get even a minor shock....maybe it's a side effect of years of steroids , I don't know. But scarey. I also am mildly anaemic ....my GP arranged a blood test.

Mind you , my three daughters and my late mother all have or had a tendency to pass out .One only has to have an injection and she's gone.

I would get your health professional to check your blood pressure sit to stand, and a blood test maybe.

I would make a appointment with my GP, if I were you, high and low blood pressure both have that symptom.

Have it checked out!! Better to be safe!!!

Hi chally,

I am in the same position. I have been on Amlodopine for some time but have been experiencing dizzyness and a very wanny unstable feeling as though I am going to pass out for a while now.

On examination my BP was dropping quite dramatically from sitting to standing and so dx with positional hypertension.

They have taken me off the Amlodopine to see if it makes a difference, which it hasn’t. I have had a 24 (well actually it was 12 hours ambulatory BP monitoring. I have now been referred to a cardiologist 10 Sep, prior to this I have to have a 24 hour ambulatory BP monitoring at the hospital.

They do say get up very slowly. Well I know I’m getting on a bit but life isn’t like that. Bending all the time (feeding the cat, putting in washing etc. Taken me 3 days to do the front garden as I’m up and down weeding etc).

Please get this looked into. You might want to ask about ambulatory BP monitoring as a few isolated BP checks will not really reveal much.

Good luck and I hope you get sorted out soon.

Love cx

@cofdrop-UK I am also on Amlodopine along with Losartan HTC for BP. Just checked BP a little while ago. It was 112/71. I believe that's decent. If I take just the Losartan my BP remains high.

Did you do a sitting/standing BP? If it were me I would defo get this checked out by the medics.

Good luck

Low blood sugar? I used to faint a lot as a teenager, e.g. rushing for a train without having had breakfast.

Hi challny

I have that problem I went to the doctor and he explained it to me. When people stand up they get a burst of adrenaline to the brain. I don't get that because of my meds so when I get up to fast I feel faint and have to sit down again. It's just at that moment my bp drops but then it's right back to normal.

you should ask your gp about it I was scared until he tested it , he took my bp sitting down then told me to stand up and took it again and it had dropped.

But as we are all different I would ask your Gp about it just to put your mind at rest.

Regards Eian
