Does anyone know how accurate a hand help spirometry test is compared to the good big phone boothe spirometry test...i recently went to a allergy asthma clinic and they gave me a hand held spirometry test which i had to blow into 3 times and the results were excellent... are these results as accurate as the one i took in my lung doctors office which is were you sit in a booth and blow into it ?

No! Big fat NO! Handheld is not as specific or detailed as booth spirometry.

BUT! You will find plenty for both sides.

My first spirometry was 51%, my next one at heart clinic on handheld was 41%, so, half the world believe in God! Half don't, 🤗🤔🤗🤗🌈🌈

thanks for the reply ... i noticed that the hand held they had me do at the ashtma clinic was fv1 was 100 % on best of 3 trys and at my lung doctors office the month before my boothe fev1 was 86% best on 3 trys .. so i dont know what to believe

Honestly mate! My personal situation changes almost every hour, literally! Your fev can be similar, it depends on so many factors.

Because copd can vary so much, in my case certainly! 20yrs ago, they would have put me in hospital for weeks if not months! I weighed up the modern day alternative, I could go into a home (where it is a lottery, whether you get hotel Hilton, or hotel California) or struggle along at home for as long as I can.

Besides, in my own home, I can stay up late & watch overseas sports, in a home, I would be dictated bedtime etc. No thanks

There is some variations from different places. Mine are all done in the same place, same time of day, same equipment, same physiologist. And show a steady decline. Apparently at Newcastle the readings are consistently higher. And at the Royal Brompton my readings were waaaay down. The trend may be more important than the actual numbers.

yes im doing ok except for a lot of coughing in the mornings and at night with a lot of mucus... they said back in 2015 my xray was clear but a ct scan show some mild emphysema in my upper lungs... Havent quit the fags yet but cut down to less than a pack daily .. my fev1 yesterday was 100 and back in 2015 it was 77... i have had many hand held and boothe spirometry tests since 2004 and i will post my chart as a new topic because i cant seem to up load the pic chart on this comment showing all my results from 04 until yesterday ... what do you think

Hi

They are both accurate in the test they perform. The booth is a full lung function test and offers more detailed information which can not be achieved with the normal Spirometer.

You will have noticed with the booth there are several gas cylinders which are used during the test. Which gives a better understanding of lung capacity and function.

Hello Dennis.

They are both accurate. I use a hand held daily. The difference being the hand held is very limited in it's range of abilities. For us post transplant patients we need to monitor our FEV 1 and FEV6 everyday to make sure we don't have a decline in numbers because that could mean rejection or infection. It would be too risky a chance to use a hand held if it didn't prove to be accurate. Take care. 🍀

The spirometry is the same. When you have a complete Pulmonary Function Test in the box formal name phelthysmography tests for other things like your DLCO, etc. Spirometry will give you your FEV1 and FVC. The new more portable, hand held, and small desk top, machines are very accurate. (So, say my respiratory friends!). The "box" just tests more things.. Also, your FEV1/FVC, can change hourly...we are human bodies!!

Take good care, stay well, p.s. both numbers are very good, celebrate them. If you stop smoking you will never regret it. That I know for sure!🌻🌻🌻
