I was diagnosed in 2005 and carried on smoking for 5yrs , worst decision I ever made Micky, those 5yrs saw my lung function drop from 38% to 25% and my copd to go from stage 2 to 4 , since stopping in 2010 I've been religiously taking my meds eating well and exercising ( gently of course) .I'm convinced those 5 yrs have accelerated my copd ,for me the decision was life or death

Not me I stopped 10 years ago. I am not condemning anyone that hasn't though as I know how hard it is, if you can do it it will help.x

It is hard to give up those lung muckers! I was diagnosed the copd but then developed pneumonia with severe respiratory failure; ended up in icu for two weeks and then the ward and then rehab. I have not smoked since. Now easy to say, but please stop. Please do not wait for a nasty incident to happen, which by smoking you are amping up that possibility. Let us know how you go. Best of luck.

On and off can't seem to stop completely stop for a mth then have a couple I think there is something more in them than usual since the plain packets came in how do we know they aren't knock offs ?

I don't anymore! I stopped 2 yrs ago, but I know I should have stopped 2 yrs before, as I self diagnosed, I knew I had copd, when l first went to the hospital. Just needed official diagnosis! The symptoms had been there since about 2010 really, just had a lot of dogs and employment problems, and all smokers know that it is impossible to stop under stress! I only finally gave up because of a really, really bad flu! It nearly killed me. Ironic, hey?

I was diagnosed 10years ago and carried on smoking. My brother and sister was also diagnosed around the same time. I finally gave up 7yes ago after seeing my sister and brother both hospitalised with breathing problems. Unfortunately my brother and sister continued to smoke even though they were slowly getting worse, now they are both severe and given up too late to help much though.

My sister has been admitted to resus three times and we were told nothing they could do for her, but she survived each time SO FAR.

It is up to the individual to stop the habit but I know I am better for it , unfortunately too late for my brother and sister. x

I feel for you. Feeling guilty about it just makes you smoke more. I would never have managed to stop without vaping.

Neither would I Phyll - everything else failed but quit overnight with an e-cig; that was 10 years ago and no cravings, completely painless. Considering I smoked a pack a day for 60+ years I thought that pretty amazing.

Diagnosed 15 years and still smoking. I have tried everything to help me stop but nothing has worked. I have now given up giving up and enjoy my wine and cigs without beating myself up.

Even though it is 2 years! I dream every night! EVERY NIGHT! of having a bloody cigarette, I am positive, I only get a good night's sleep, because of the desire(&you know how there is debate about the real world being our dream time), I often wake up scared rotten, I have actually, really lit a cigarette and it takes a few minutes to realise it was a dream.

A packet of 20 cigarettes is about $30-35 a pack now! Most people can't afford them.

I would LOVE to have a cigarette, but, my breathing is terrible now, jesus, if I had 1, it would be the end!
