Hard work pays off!

See where healthy living gets me.....

12 years ago, when I was diagnosed with COPD- lung disease, my lung function FEV1 was 49% pretty low! last year FEV1 was 60% and today it was 64% ....that is magic! Intensive healthy living .... balanced exercise, fresh healthy food ( no meat ) no smoking, very little alcohol, always take my medication and practice meditation. Smile and laugh a lot too..just think where my lungs will be if I continue like this! Yay! Very Happy....:-)

Well done. It is amazing how a little (!) hard work improves lung function, especially when combined with healthy living. Congratulations! :)

Thanks everyone, I really wasn't expecting such good results, and really as someone has already commented it doesn't take too much to improve and maintain that improvement. It really is about a balance of all aspects of self care and if I can then anyone can.

Come on people. yes we can eh?

Wahooooo.

Thanks everyone, when we are diagnosed with COPD we are often told to take our meds and that's it! No one ever said to me well if you tackle the whole of your lifestyle then the possibility of better health can become a reality.

A PMA or stubbornness or determinedess me has always been me and sometimes it works against my health, because I didn't pace myself. Rest has been tricky for me, but I've got it now though don't wish to be part of the sitting down epidemic either ;-)

Have lost my dog too now, so am a dogless walker :-(

I may have COPD but it doesn't have me!

I will post separately a book I came across very recently.......as I write this just hearing about how 30 mins of gardening can bring real benefits.

Take care y'all

Fantastic news!!

Hi Polly, that is fantastic! I've never heard of anyone with COPD whose FEV1 increases over time - usually the opposite.

I presume you were moderate or mild COPD 12 years ago and it sounds like the illness has not progressed further at all?

Could you share your exercise and diet regime with us all?

Yes, laughing a lot is a big contributor to beating illness and I agree meditation is very good for one's well emotional and spiritual being.

James :)

PollyP profile image
PollyPβ€’ in reply toJames48

No,no,no James! was diagnosed 12years ago as moderate to severe ( pants!) which why I am soooo chuffed with the latest results...remarkable

I had never thought it would be possible either but the computer said yes!

I was so ill 12 years ago when diagnosed I couldn't smoke anymore and gave up there and then :-) I have had ups and downs since, with a spell in hospital with double pneumonia in 2006 or 2007 ( can't recall now exactly when it was)

If you think it would help to share my healthy living programme will do so later. :-)

Have a great day.

P.

I certainly would agree that sharing your 'program' would be beneficial and a help for us all. Even if we just used it as a guide it could help. Be proud of yourself, I hope I can make similar improvements over time.

Thanks for reply Polly. I'm sure it would be good idea to post exercise and diet information. It may help the folks on this site. It's such a great site for tips, information and support .

Thanks, James :)

That's great Polly, I sure hope the improvement continues for you. Do you feel the difference physically to go along with the improved numbers?

PollyP profile image
PollyP

Hi there,

Yes I do feel the improvement is partially attributable to regular exercise. I completed a PR programme 3 and a bit years ago, before that I walked a lot! 2 years ago I moved to a smaller house, easier to manage and less stress with easier access to great local facilities.

So that may have contributed to things as they are now, I know how to exercise in a beneficial way and I am happier in my new environment.

Let's see if I can keep this progress up eh?

Keep well and happy :-)
