A Warning for Dodderers.

I fell down the stairs last Monday, a silly thing to do.

Luckily nowt got broke but a warnings here for you.

When we get old and doddery, we must take special care.

Cos if you fall and break something, it's difficult to repair.

Even if you don't break owt you will have had a nasty clout.

And end up like poor Elvis, of that there's little doubt.

Good morning Mr.D and you gave me my first chuckle of the day! How did Elvis say "A, ha ha, oooh ....I'm all shook up" (ok so you need to imagine the music, his voice or better still watch the video link you gave us) For goodness sake,I can feel my brain is taking its time in making any connection to the rest of me!

Thanks for that eloquent reminder, Don, and the lovely Elvis song! I do hope you’ve settled by now.

It’s a real bruiser falling down the stairs. When I did it last, a few years ago now, it gave me a nasty whack on the head and two sprained ankles (was in my high heels!) and couldn’t drive for a while. Nasty 🤕 xx

in reply toYatzy

Oh....very nasty. I was lucky, just a few bruises and a bit stiff. I was half way down when I missed my footing and landed on the floor, next to the stair lift (which I'm sure had a grin on it's face).

Good to hear you got away so well in the end- and thanks both for the poem & the lovely Elvis-reference!

Thanks. Just a bit stiff, Cas, and a lesson well learnt.🙄

I don't know if this is an autobiographical poem but if so, I hope you're recovering from the whole ordeal. I don't have any stairs in my house but still find things to trip over 🙄

in reply toHungryHufflepuff

When my wife was alive we discussed moving to a bungalow but decided to stay and buy a stair-lift instead, which I still have. I mainly avoid using it because I need the exercise and also because it is so slow. I came down lot faster on this particular occasion so will in future use it more often. It was quite painful at first and I was afraid that I might have damaged my right knee joint, but everything seems to be working normally and the pain has just merged in with the others I have. 🙂 My regards to the 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑 (How about some photos of them, you've only posted one up to now?)

I’ll go out later with my iPad even though it’s very windy. All my more recent photos are on my phone, and for some reason recently I can’t post pictures from my phone. I just get some error message. I will give them your regards anyway.

I’m glad you don’t appear to have damaged yourself but sorry to know it’s painful. Hopefully it’s somet that will ease. Have you tried arnica gel/cream? It really does work. I think so anyway, even if it is psychological, if it works it works.

in reply toHungryHufflepuff

I had never heard of Arnica products before but I see it's something that would be handy to have around the house. Thank you. I find that if you really believe in something it usually works. 🙂

Arnica is good - witch hazel will reduce or prevent bruises if applied soon after the damage - Tiger Balm can alleviate pain - and stair lifts can eliminate falls or failing that put the items you wish to transport on the stair lift if you don't want an actual ride - but please just use it - much safer!

Oh Don, As long as you didn't hit your Head and we get Scrambled Poems. I do hope your not too much in Pain and By now it has eased up, I know about "Knees" mine do not belong to me I'm sure. they do need a bit of TLC with "Ibuprofen" Gel every few hours. I have heard of Arnica, though not tried as Yet. Keep giving us your Worldly Writings Dear Don. Love n Hugs and a Kiss for your pain. xxxxx

in reply toHacienda

Well my knees really don't belong to me, they are on loan from the NHS and I was concerned that the nuts, bolts and adhesive hadn't shifted, but all seems well. Normal service has now resumed. Thank you. 🙂

Have known many people who swear by Arnica for bruising and bone pain, please watch your feet, do not want hospital time.

in reply toSORRELHIPPO

Bruising is strange when you get old. It used to be black & blue with a bit of yellow thrown in, now it's big patches of purple which look like birthmarks.

I think it is to do with the skin getting thinner as you age, and of course worse if have taken lots of steroids over the years, thinning the skin even more. I spent years giving advice on falls prevention, most often poor condition carpets and bad shoe choices. Had a lovely 80 year old lady, I advised her that the cream sling back shoes she was wearing, that had 3" cuban heels, were a little dangerous. She drew herself up to her full 5' and said " if they are good enough for the dear Queen Mother they are good enough for me".

in reply toSORRELHIPPO

🤣 I reckon the Queen Mum would have had a lot more people to hold her up than she did.

majji profile image
majji in reply to

I am sure she needed rather more people to hold her up - was it due to the gin or Dubonnet?

in reply tomajji

I avoided mentioning that, Ma'am, if you happen to be watching from up there! 😮

Monday wasn't a good day for me either don. At the rehab session, picked up the half kilo weights to do the arm curls, as you do, and broke two fingers. Both very black and

strapped together. Glad your still in one piece. Jane🤟🏨

in reply tochubby2x22

Good heavens! I always thought swinging those things about was asking for trouble. That must be so very painful. 🙁 I didn't do much damage at all and have fully recovered, I think.
