Cycling with COPD

I was diagnosed with COPD about 10 years ago and it has, as expected, got worse over time. I also have ME/CFS which means I tire very easily when trying to exercise. Also kidney cancer which will all add to the tiring factor. I couldn't ride a normal bike but wondered if anybody had tried one of the e-bikes where you can set the assistance level.

I need to do something as I looked in the mirror before my bath last week and all I saw was saggy skin and no muscle whatsoever. This hit me hard as I was a rugby playing lumberjack in my youth and had always been fit until a few years ago.

So, the bike. Thoughts please.

Andy

Hello, I am new to this site. I was diagnosed with COPD about 7 yrs. ago believe it or not. I didn't pay too much attention to it until recently! But, at the time, my doctor said I had COPD and left the room. Heavy smoker for about 40 yrs,

quit about 12 yrs. ago.

But, after reading and questions a brand new pulmonologist, I was really scared last week, to find out all the things I didn't know. I honestly thought, and was hinted at by my regular DR. (grrr), that it won't get worse once I quit smoking...OK!!

So here, I am with 44% FEV1, and ration of FEV!/FVC at 65%.

Bless this pumonologist. She is putting me thru respiratory rehab. I didn't even know it existed and answered any question I could think of and explained everything to me. I wish I had met her 12 years ago.

So, my goal is to get back in shape. It made it harder as I had ruptured 2 disks in my back and had surgery and is considered failed back surgery.

My goal is to bring up my numbers

.

Don't laugh, but I have a 3 yr. old rescue dog, and that last thing I want to do is abandon her. She already has had that happen. She is my pal, along with ummm...4 rescue cats! LOL..I do have a son out there, he is 41 and as usual, is so busy, he forgets to call..he lives in another state so I don't get to see him very often. He does not know about this, I will tell him eventually, when I feel my health is really deteriorating...but I don't need to heap worry on him..Right now, I can still walk in the AM 30 MINS, vacuum, do dishes, etc I am getting tired little easier and am noticing my breathing is not anywhere near it was even compared to last year...Have 2 different inhalers, and had 2 breathing treatments just in the past 3 months.

But I will make sure I improve my health. I have always loved good food and vegetables and fruits and have always belonged to a gym until my back surgery. All of this most likely kept this at bay for quite a while..

ps: I AM NOW 68..

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN...

TAKE CARE

Hi treecutter, if you type ' e bike' into the search box on the top right hand side of this page.

Then press Posts on the left hand side of the new page.

Then press Filter Results for My Communities on the right hand side.

You will find pasts posts on e bikes.....one from our own member ' two greys'

I have an indoor exercise bike, the BLF have a free exercise CD.

With ME I know you have to learn to pace yourself .

Have you been offered Pulmonary Rehab?

Best wishes

I bought a trike to help me. It means I don't have to work hard on the balance and I can sit and rest every time I stop.

The thing to do is to go and see if you can get a test ride or short term rental of an bike at your local bike shop before you commit to buying one. My brother uses one every day for his daily commute and wouldn't be without it. You can set the level of assistance to suit your needd

I have an e bike and absolutely LOVE it! I can zip by at up to 25 mph and the charge will last 4 hours. I can use it as totally electric or electric assist. I bought it because it's hot where I live (AZ) and riding a regular bike would be too much, but this is perfect. You let it charge overnight and you are good to go! I even have a basket on front for trips to the store for little things I need! Good luck (I bought mine on Amazon, a purchase I definitely didn't regret)!

Unfortunately, ebikes are limited to 15mph in the UK, unless you register it as a road vehicle. This is a whole load of grief I don't need. I looked at one which would do 45mph but this would cause me too many problems with red tape. Good idea though.

I ride a Focus Bold2 E-Bike, and believe me 15mph is more than fast enough.

You can get them chipped to go faster, but your legs will be spinning very fast unless you change the gearing.

I commute on mine every day 22miles, doing it on my non electric would not be possible.

Not what you're looking for?
