Hi all. Had my first and last visit to the Royal Brampton Hospital last Tuesday . I have end stage COPD and nothing they can do for me and I have a 50% chance of not making the next three years. I guess it's live life to full from now on.
PS. I am Kevin and Poppy was the name of my beloved dog who is on longer you us .
Regards Kevin

Morning kev, sorry you've had this time span thrown at yer, but no one knows the future and lots of folk on here outlive their prediction. Hope you try to enjoy life , lots of inhalers and tissues, love and laughter. Jane
So sorry to hear your news. Here’s to you being in the other 50% that will make it passed the 3 years with as much quality of life as possible, surely the quality is something they can assist with? Gentle hugs to you x
Hi Kevin, sorry to know you had bad news. Hopefully the hospital gave you some advice and support after that, and didn't just tell you goodbye. As has been said, you have a 50% chance of living longer than 3 years, and anyway many of us outlive predictions and have a better quality of life than predicted. Don't let some crummy prediction determine how you live your life other than to encourage you to live it to the fullest. None of us know how long we have or what tomorrow will bring. Hopefully you will get some good medical care from your doctor, and support and friendship here. Sending you very best wishes.
Hi Kevin, I don’t know why these people come out with their strange predictions. Were they sure it was %50 and not %49 or even %51? What purpose do they serve? Any of us could go tomorrow. I’d be inclined to tell them to stick their crystal ball up their.... jumper, forget it and get on with enjoying life as best you can as you appear to have decided to do. My very best wishes to you. Don 🤜🤛
Hi Kevin, live life to the full and enjoy every day. Nothing to do with any predictions, life is worth living. Thinking of you and wishing you well. Xxxxx
I agree with everyone here Kevin, A lot of us here are still here after the silly "Prediction" it's what you make of your Life, by doing all the right things to Have a Happy and Longer Life. Best wishes and Cheers, my Glass is Half Full. xxxxx
Hello and welcome. I was told last year by a consultant that there was nothing more he could do but he didn't give a life expectancy. I'm not sure if you having been given one is a good or bad thing, but none of us have a crystal ball. I hope you are able to make the best of each day without dwelling too much on the future. Best wishes.
I have said this before and I will happily reiterate, there is no way for anyone to predict the lifespan of another, doctor or no doctor. The only time a doctor can tell death is imminent is days and hours before passing. The rest is just unknown. Doctors go by statistics and you are not a statistic! Keep yourself moving, eat well and enjoy life. None of us have forever and to be honest that's fine by me. 😉
I’m back after three intensive weeks of marking the 11 yr olds test papers. I’m unfolding gradually from laptop position, ten hours a day! The immobility and lack of fresh air hasn’t done my lungs much good, stepping up the meds a bit before my asthma goes into freefall. Fingers crossed! Hope you’re going well yourself?
Having worked in the health service for many years I found that Doctors predictions were often wrong. Personally I trust the doctor who says I cannot answer that rather than quoting a percentage from research.
I'm so sorry for your news Kevin, yes that's my motor, live life to the full and every day is beautiful. I have moderate copd, which has got worse very fast over last 6 months. My doc has changed my inhaler to a much stronger one. Day to day life can be so hard. I hope you feel a bit better soon, though I know how you feel. Chin up Kevin. P. S, poppy is a lovely name for a dog.
When my mum was first diagnosed with copd aged 50 a consultant said she'd be lucky to reach 60. She's still here, copd severe now, aged 83. Has had hip replacement and diabetes. Still soldiers on. Here's hoping you are in the 50% that do go beyond 3 years. Take care of yourself, get best care and advice you can from doctors. Wishing you all the best.
Here's to three busy, fun packed years and hopefully a few more after that. Live, enjoy and try to keep in touch with all of us somehow in your busy life time xxx
Remember one thing there is always hope. There may not be a cure but there is always medication to keep you ticking over. I have had COPD for over ten years and now down to only 20% lung function but my consultant has not given me a time scale. I don’t know how old you are but I’m 68 and set my target to reach 75. When I reach that I will reset it to 85. Whilst there is no cure there is always hope.
Whilst life is a pain being SOB and lugging oxygen equipment around I find looking on the bright side keeps me going during my darkest hour.
For your own sake and sanity dust yourself off. Pick up the pieces of your life ad keep smiling as there are many of us just like you and indeed worse. So come on put a smile on your face and look on the bright side.
The power of positive thinking works every time. Good luck
Hi Kevin sorry about your bad news but you know the old saying, where there's life there's hope and I got one firmly believe that. Always live your life to the full Kevin enjoy every moment of it
Please keep posting and keep fighting Hun. Have a lovely day and take care of yourself 😊 Bernadette xx
"You do not have an expiration date stamped on your forehead." That is not my original line...I borrowed it, but it still is true, Kevin! Try to improve your immune system....have your Vitamin D level checked, and if low, take Vitamin D3 supplement. Take Vitamin C. Local honey and Elderberry syrups are good immune boosters. Do all that you can to avoid others who have colds, flus, wear a mask when going into crowded areas (shopping malls, big box stores.) keep hand sanitizer in your pocket and use it after touching door or cart handles (wearing gloves helps) In other words, protect yourself as much as possible against coming into contact with germs. Make the best of it whether it is 5, 10, 20 more years. All good wishes. J
So sorry to hear this poppy. There was a lovely member on here who has sadly passed now who was also given 3 years. She made 11 so please don't give up hope. x
Make it your target to prove them wrong Kevin, they don’t know everything by a long chalk, although they make out they do. Believe that you’ll outdo their prediction, and you will!
What a meaningless statistic anyway. A 50% chance! So presumably you have a 50% chance of living more than 3 years or 5 or 10!
None of us is privy to that information. Follow all the good advice you've been given above and ignore him, look after yourself, stay postive and enjoy each day.
I've got pah and was very keen to know how long I'd last. I asked a guy at the brompton. He wasn't keen and waffled on for ten minutes. I told him i really wanted to know and he said without medication the 50% death rate is two years, with medication ten years. What he was describing was a bell curve. Ok, I'm severe so it will be less than ten years, potentially quite a bit less. It's maths
There are a number of us here who are "end stage". This month, I get to revise my End of Life plan for the fifth time... In my humble opinion, I think you need to acknowledge that your lungs are pretty lousy, then get on with as much exercise as you can, eat well, go out when you can -- and enjoy life.
