Iris i am not wishing to usurp you on a Sunday(it being late Saturday night)and i expect and hope i will awaken to your poem tomorrow, but knowing your passions for both Poets and Gardens i found this for you and i hope you enjoy it.

Oh and by the way before i get accused of favouritism again it is for EVERYBODY as well lol. :)

Love to all Ski's and Scruff's......... night night zzzzzzzzzzzzz

P.s sorry about the bad weather and Rudyard's reference to dodgy knees :)

The Glory Of The Garden

By Rudyard Kipling

Our England is a garden that is full of stately views,

Of borders, beds and shrubberies and lawns and avenues,

With statues on the terraces and peacocks strutting by;

But the Glory of the Garden lies in more than meets the eye.

For where the old thick laurels grow, along the thin red wall,

You'll find the tool- and potting-sheds which are the heart of all

The cold-frames and the hot-houses, the dung-pits and the tanks,

The rollers, carts, and drain-pipes, with the barrows and the planks.

And there you'll see the gardeners, the men and 'prentice boys

Told off to do as they are bid and do it without noise ;

For, except when seeds are planted and we shout to scare the birds,

The Glory of the Garden it abideth not in words.

And some can pot begonias and some can bud a rose,

And some are hardly fit to trust with anything that grows ;

But they can roll and trim the lawns and sift the sand and loam,

For the Glory of the Garden occupieth all who come.

Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made

By singing, "Oh, how beautiful," and sitting in the shade

While better men than we go out and start their working lives

At grubbing weeds from gravel-paths with broken dinner-knives.

There's not a pair of legs so thin, there's not a head so thick,

There's not a hand so weak and white, nor yet a heart so sick

But it can find some needful job that's crying to be done,

For the Glory of the Garden glorifieth every one.

Then seek your job with thankfulness and work till further orders,

If it's only netting strawberries or killing slugs on borders;

And when your back stops aching and your hands begin to harden,

You will find yourself a partner In the Glory of the Garden.

Oh, Adam was a gardener, and God who made him sees

That half a proper gardener's work is done upon his knees,

So when your work is finished, you can wash your hands and pray

For the Glory of the Garden that it may not pass away!

And the Glory of the Garden it shall never pass away!

Well it is now Sunday in the UK and has been Sunday for a while in various places. In fact in Auckland it's almost Sunday lunchtime. Whereas in Hawaii it's lunchtime on Saturday now.

I just realized I measure my life in mealtimes.

Anyway thanks for the poem Skis 🌱☘️🌷🌻🌼🌾🌿

Well HH by my reckoning and rising late it is now half past breakfast and ten to lunch.:) x

Thankyou for sharing that ski's. I could just see Bateman's which I visited a couple of years ago and poignantly, my Nan in my grandparent's beautiful but much humbler garden on her hands and knees digging weeds out of the lawn with a broken, bone handled dinner knife. Lovely

LP,I am the proud possessor of an inherited bone handled butter knife,it probably belonged to my grandparents?i only have the one but it is a well guarded treasure.the rest of my cutlery at some time or other has been utilised in the garden as some time in it's life. :) xx

With lashings of salt and vinegar and of course don't forget to ask for the free 'scratchings' as we kids used to call them. happier days.:) xx

Ugh no vinegar! And unless the pork scratchings are veggie you can have mine! :D xx

skischool profile image
skischoolβ€’ in reply tohypercat54

Vinegar only on the chips and the 'scratchings' were the little bits of batter that the fish and chip man used to clear off the top of the frying oil and were the tastiest bit of what was once a nice and cheap meal.:) x

Oh that's ok then - hands off my scratchings :D xx

skischool profile image
skischoolβ€’ in reply tohypercat54

If i remember rightly we used to ask for a pennies worth of scratchings cos we couldn't afford the fish or chips on occasions. :) x

Remember them well skis, they were a treat, being the youngest of four had to fight to get some but being the smallest I learned to fight dirty early on lol x

Thank you skis, that is a lovely poem to wake up to and one I can relate to. And what a beautiful morning this is with the sun streaming through the windows an unexpected joy. Hope all is well with you x

Glad you enjoyed the repeat Irene, can you possibly stream some of that sunshine our way as here we have wandering grey clouds and hints of more of the wet stuff. :( xx

Izb1β€’ in reply toskischool

Ha! Sunshine lasted long enough to re-pot some aloe vera cutting's. I can't believe you didn't have any sun this morning, your only up the road, although that has gone for the day now. That is typical as I have now finished the cleaning, cooking the dinner and now sitting down to a cuppa.

I like the site that you sourced for us, I will look at that when I get time. Dont know how you find these things, I am hopeless x

That is a lovely poem Skis, have to point out that I posted that one in April this year but it is always worth another reading. Now I must get today's poem up. I'm not an early riser you may have noticed unlike Tony who is up, showered and peeled the potatoes and carrots already! Love Iris x

skischoolβ€’ in reply toLyd12

Iris,i knew my memory was bad and now you have confirmed that, gosh was it only as recently as April? i can't even say 'how time flies' it is so recent.nevertheless as you say the good ones are always worthy of a repeat,a motto of the bbc i believe?

Enjoy your Sunday, the rain you craved for your parched garden must have even arrived in the sub tropics of Hertfordshire by now and your garden, although resplendent in colour will need some knee damaging tlc now.

Love Ski's and Scruff's xx

A garden is a lovesome thing, God wot -

With such gay garnishings for dish and pot.

We have had rain and now it is possible to pull out weeds without a clump of dry earth attached, and all the dead foliage from the Spring bulbs needs cutting back, which the birds love as it reveals all the insects, snails, etc. underneath. Wish I could do more but do a bit, rest a bit, gets it done eventually. Love Iris x

HungryHufflepuff profile image

Doh ... I didn't remember it either. I think the BBC refer to it as From the Archives, which makes it sound more prestigeous than a cheap repeat.

I hope Scruffy is found now? Not that she probably considered herself lost, she knew exactly where she was.

skischool profile image
skischoolβ€’ in reply toHungryHufflepuff

Scruffy has plonked herself within the desired arms length comfort zone as a default position in lieu of a nice warm lap. :) x

The sub tropics of Hertfordshire SirSki? Now that is news to me!

skischool profile image
skischoolβ€’ in reply tomajji

For much of my life i lived in the very same tropical paradise of Hertfordshire,in fact as a child my playground was the studio plot of the then MGM studios marveling at the set of Ivanhoe and clambering over Cliff Richard's bus from summer holidays,oh happy days and such a wonderful climate. :) x

Aha - a Boreham Wood boy?

skischool profile image
skischoolβ€’ in reply tomajji

You are the only other person on the planet to have heard of Borehamwood and you almost got the name right lol :) x

majji profile image
majjiβ€’ in reply toskischool

Oops Borehamwood! Sincere apologies SirSki - almost asleep now so climbing the wooden stairs - Wishing everyone a peaceful night.

skischool profile image
skischoolβ€’ in reply tomajji

Actually so belittled was Borehamwood that the train station is called Elstree and Borehamwood cos Elstree only a small village was considered posher than my home town. :)

majji profile image
majjiβ€’ in reply toskischool

Oh well what did the inhabitants of Elstree know - I assume they were peeps who considered one was above the other in the poshness stakes ;-) ?

skischool profile image
skischoolβ€’ in reply tomajji

They were to busy competing with Radlett in the other direction which was even posher, though Shenley just up the road was famous as a village built around a mental asylum but they had a nice bus service, :) x

But you had to be somewhat potty to want to live there and ride the bus???

Thank you skis, very good of you to post such a wonderful poem.

I’m very happy because my family are home from Kos after a wonderful holiday. Their cat Sybil was very pleased to see them.

Have a lovely day and look after Scruffy. XxxxπŸ’–πŸ˜˜

Dear Carole,i bet you will be reluctant to hand back Sybil and i imagine she will have had a better holiday in your company than the family did in Kos.

Majt,I can remember chips and scratchings and plain crisps with little blue bags of salt in them but ask me to remember even a relatives name from the distant past and i am flummoxed.:) x

β€’ in reply toskischool

Yes I can remember the little blue bag with Smith's crisps we are still asked if we want scrapings with fish and chips. Funny how we can remember some things and not others. 😊 x

skischool profile image
skischoolβ€’ in reply to

I am afraid that fish and chips don't hold the same magic anymore.i think most chip shops have just lost the technique in preparation and frying and it could also be the oil that is used but isn't that just the story of life and part of getting old. :) x

Yes I agree things don't taste the same anymore there is only one fish shop that you can say are really nice it's a place called Barned castle and they have a fish shop in Bridlington best fish and chips ever. No fun in getting old 😒

Unfortunately both a bit of a treck from my part of lancashire but already penciled into the new Ski's guide to fish and chip shops yet to be published.more research required. :) x
