That is what is worrying. I am ex smoker, gave up almost 20 years ago. I was recently diagnosed mild copd. Some say you shouldn't necessarily get any worse, others say it's a progressive illness and you will worsen anyway, just quicker if you still smoke! Whatcare folks thoughts on this?

in reply to Lemon7

Hi this is a great topic of confusion which I want to know as well

Schmicter profile image
Schmicter

Lung function declines with age, that is just a fact of life. If at some time you were a smoker you might have a more rapid decline, and even get diagnosed with COPD. If you quit smoking most will will feel better and breathe better, I am sure there are a small percentage of people that quit smoking and get worse, but that is a small percentage. I quit about 2 years ago and feel much better. There is no question if you keep smoking...you are likely to die sooner. And, with a far lower quality of life.

in reply to Schmicter

But do you decline like rest of population as part of aging process or decline faster. It is confusing. And is still smoking a contributing factor.

So if only a few still smoke yet everyone has declined giving up smoking does not stop the progression it would appear. This is so so confusing. So we progress no matter what we do? Guess this question is help the newly diagnosed

Lemon7 profile image
Lemon7 in reply to

Emily I think maybe we still decline but slower by giving up smoking. Also living healthily and exercising will help us even if we still decline.

garshe profile image
garshe in reply to

It stopped mine.. I was diagnosed COPD severe 10 yrs ago .gave up smoking immediately. My lung function has improved so giving up smoking has made a huge difference. Your Lung function starts to deteriorate from around age 27. If you smoke it deteriorates more than a non smoker. Give it up and it goes back to deteriorating normally. My COPD won't go away but is controlled by me giving up smoking. I will NEVER understand why anyone with a lung condition carries in smoking .

in reply to garshe

Thank you for your response. Well all we can do is hope for a slow decline snail pace. And maintain a good quality of life

As one of those- weakness, my husband smokes so they are always there, fear of weight gain, feeling like it doesn’t t matter anyway. Right or wrong, these are all the things that go through my mind. I’m quitting again today .

Don’t bother replying rudely; I refuse to be shamed.

Would not be rude. Everyone is different and need to do what is right for themselves. Choose what you do, and when to do it, for your own reasons. All good wishes to you.

I would Never reply rudely .I found it easy to quit smoking. I swore on my Granddaughters life I would Never touch another cigarette. I didn't. I never gained weight and it's been 10 yrs now. It's will power don't need patches etc .just make the break. Really worth it. Every One has a right to choose.

Hi

That's all very well for you to say but it has been scientifically proven that nicotine is more addictive than heroin and it can be a huge struggle for smokers to give up.

By the way I gave them up 5 years ago.

Regards

Kevin

We all have different ways of coping. I suppose I was lucky as never had a problem quitting once I was diagnosed with COPD. I wanted to be around to see my Granddaughter grow up. Happy you gave up also as will slow the progression of this horrible disease.

Sheila.

You may not get many responses as those who continue to smoke will progress their condition far more rapidly than the natural depletion of lung capacity which is quite small and tolerated by those without a condition ?

Regards Ski's who still craves tobacco after almost a year of quitting. :) x

in reply to skischool

It's a shame because this forum is about support trust and family I would have thought.

Emily,If people continue to smoke with a progressive disease then not many of them will be about to respond to the post was what i meant.

in reply to skischool

Hi I knew what you meant I meant it's a shame people won't as this helps us newbies. I agree with what you are saying just feel it's a shame

skischool profile image
skischool in reply to

I think maybe you are over thinking this and although it's a bit gloomy up north for some reason i think you are in a southerly location and that you should be out and about enjoying life and the sunshine, :) x

hypercat54 profile image
hypercat54

A lot of it depends on luck. Copd is a progressive disease so will get worse over time. This is due to natural aging and also the illness. However smoking will make it progress faster. We are all different and no one can tell you exactly how fast you will decline. Some people, despite doing all the right things, will progress more quickly than others at the same stage. On the other hand I haven't progressed much at all (yet) despite still smoking. It's a matter of having some good lung genes as well as bad which I obviously do.

The best thing to do is not to worry so much about it, accept you have an illness and take care of your lungs, then go and live your life. Life is uncertain anyway and you never know what might get you in the end. That's what I do and let the future take care of itself. If you live in the past you live with regret, in the future and you live with worry and anxiety. But if you live in the present you live with balance.

Life doesn't come with any guarantees or a handbook does it!. x

in reply to hypercat54

Very nicely put. I think maybe if people are still smoking and donr want to say that's fair enough and should be respected, I think though it's not a judgement question is a trying to make sense of it question.

I was diagnosed 3 years ago, as moderate. I quit smoking for 3 months, picked up again, now am quit 1 year. A&E visits and infections all the time after diagnosis. None, in past year since quitting. Still some breathing problems especially on exertion. Not hacking all the time though.

in reply to pepapod

Thank you for responding this is so helpful for us newly diagnosed who may feel not smoking has no purpose thank you so much for that thank you

in reply to pepapod

Can I ask are you still moderate

Yes, I work full time, exercise, and take care of my grandchildren sometimes. I am short of breath often when active, but it is more annoying than anything at this stage for me now that I am not sick all the time.

I stopped in 2010 after being advised to in 2005 ,I regret not stopping in2005 as I know this extra 5 yrs accelerated the decline in lung function, at present I'm losing just over 1% lung function per year and tbh since stopping I've never considered taking another drag

I don't think they are lying. It seems some who stop smoking or give up an occupational cause etc might stabilise and not worsen much. On the other hand some will deteriorate no matter what. The dr is not a fortune teller and can't know what you will be. Maybe they do spirometry yearly for that reason, to discover if you are deteriorating and change your treatment accordingly to help you all they can. I don't know for sure but just applying common sense. A respiratory nurse at pulmonary rehab I'm attending said we would decline in lung function with copd a bit more than never smoker with aging. That's why exercise etc is important.

Lemon7 profile image
Lemon7

Maybe, although why tell you you will deteriorate and worry you and then if you stabilise and dont worsen you will be angry with doc for worrying you unnecessarily. Just a thought.

Lemon7 profile image
Lemon7

You're probably right. Fingers crossed we are the fortunate slow decliners. Meanwhile I am gonna do all I can to try to prevent myself from getting worse quickly. Best wishes to you.

Hello smoking is a toxin we have too deal with but there are other toxins we deal with day in day out they are all around us what we all have is a wonderful organ ,the liver this organ works day and night to rid us of these toxins storing all the poisons it can to keep us safe , when are livers get over burdened it can’t protect us .when this happens these toxins are released into our bodies and cause havoc if you can detox your liver gently through eating fruit and vegetables drinking plenty of water this will reverse your liver load and allow it to protect you again from these toxins

Hi Scottish65lass, I tried and failed so many times to stop smoking and must admit always felt bad with coughs and colds, i finally stopped in 2009 and have never looked back. I just wish I had done it earlier and perhaps my lungs would be in a better condition, but cant complain I am feeling quite good.I have bronchiectasis not copd. I hope you manage to quit soon and feel good x

I finally quit smoking after about 35 years on and off and it felt great, taste, smell, easier breathing, cycling, swimming just running around with my daughter.

Then 12 months after I quit I started to get out of breath walking up hill, then up the stairs. I couldn't believe it when told about copd.

Three years now and I feel guilt everyday as I watch my daughter growing into an athletic young woman.

I seem to get worse every couple of months so this summer I'm not sure if I'll even be able to walk on the beach with her let alone go for a dip.

So, cigarette for me?

Absolutely not. I've deprived my daughter of too much already.

each to their own, enjoy whatever you do xx

I gave up over 20 years ago (20 years @ 20 a day) and jogged regularly between 50 and 60. Hit 60, became breathless and discovered I had COPD and bronchiectasis followed by late onset asthma and chronic pseudomonas infection. Been pretty ill but am now on the way up thanks to the amazing consultants I have.

It is a different situation for everyone. I expected my COPD to progress slowly. Instead I had two very bad bouts of illness over the winter and my COPD rating went from 41% to 34%, and now I worry that another bout would take me into a zone where I need to cared for, which I do not like. I am an ex smoker [gave up 5 years ago]. It felt great for a year then the COPD took over. I still long for a fag. Good luck to all. Lets enjoy the summer while we can.

I am an ex smoker.

I was diagnosed with COPD. I used to cough every day. I read about all the orange veggies, getting rid of copd. I ate them, So much.

No cough anymore, and I was re tested, and told I was misdiagnosed. It's only asthma.

Was it the veggies? Can someone else also give them a go? Please keep me informed, of you do.

Yes. If we expect our doctors to help us we must be willing to help ourselves. However, folk have to choose if and when they decide to stop smoking, select healthy foods etc not everyone has will power. I stopped smoking nearly 20 years ago, eat healthily, normal weight, exercise, swim etc. I just hope this and help from docs with flu vaccine, antibiotics etc if have infections will be enough to stop me deteriorating rapidly. All good wishes to you and hope you keep well too.
