Forced gardening

For some reason I don't quit understand, my breathing has been abnormally poor for the last couple of weeks. Nevertheless, I dragged my butt out into the year to weed a side garden bed and plant a foxtail fern we bought at a flea market. I accomplished all this in 95 degree Gulf Coast heat, and I'm rather proud of myself. I had to rest every few minutes. I must say, my yard is looking lovely.

You’ve been through a lot just recently with the pain of the sciatica and the lack of sleep because of it and the emotional burden of it all. It’s no wonder your breathing has deteriorated somewhat. Being in pain all the time is exhausting. Be patient with yourself and give your body the chance to recover from the ordeal it’s been through. But yes your yard does look lovely, congratulations 👍

Thank you HungryHufflepuff and I hope you are doing well. It's so nice to get replies from the wonderful people on this forum who understand what COPD is like. I am proud of my little yard and it gives me pleasure to keep it up. Back yard is not so pretty, but that's the domain of the dogs, Kevin and Mr. Big, both 70-plus pounds. Good boys, but tough on the yard. I don't allow them in the front!

Thank you Damon1864 that's the first time I ever posted a pix on this forum. Now, I might be doing it all the time.

Very pretty garden, Challny. I have read your post about sciatica. Sorry for that, but glad you have some relief. I too have that pain periodically. Unpleasant is putting it mildly, though stretching does help. J

Hi challny, your yard looks lovely and well worth the effort it takes. Your poor breathing could be down to the heat. I too suffer from sciatica sometimes so know what a drain this is, but do think the bending and stretching in the garden is good exercise, also for your breathing. Now lets see what the Big boy and Kevin look like x

I lived/worked a couple of years in Houston in my early career and wondered how anyone could garden in that climate.

But now here I am in Thailand - even hotter this time of year (but a little less humid). I'm often outside 2 hours in the garden, but usually before 10am.

As it happens I'm also facing a change in symptoms - moderate inflammatory pain at centre of my chest when excercising. Went to the local pulmonology specialist yesterday but he waved away my requests for an X-Ray; having listened to my lungs he said they were in great form and said I should have a check on my heart. Thankfully the ECG was clear and he said - you're good, come back if it gets worse.

Not the point - could have an emerging cancer, or my lung lymphoma could be returning. Ah well, need to get back to UK for my annual check-up double quick time I think.

Hello santisuk ...I live in Mobile, Al., about 6 hours east of Houston, so our weather is pretty similar. The summers are just brutal on the Gulf Coast. Fall and Spring are quite pleasant. High temps, high humidity. I don't know how it would be possible to live here without AC, but just 50 years ago or so most people did. Can you imagine?

Prefer Garden to Yard, but it does look tidy. Working in that heat and pollen all around

is not a good idea.I believe you do more damage than good.

But l suppose it is your choice !!!
