Bronchiectasis

Hi.

I have Bronchiectasis, unfortunately I have the Aspergillosis allergy as well, which makes my Bronchiectasis worse by the mould attacking my lungs.

The specialist has given me Itraconazole capsules to take.

I'm reluctant to take them due to the side affects as most tablets affect my tummy.

Is there anyone who has taken these tablets? and did they work?

I'm so tired of getting infections, and the mould allergy has now affected my nose and mouth.

Hi, I have had itraconazole prescribed twice now as I also have similar problems to yourself. Unfortunately I had to discontinue use after a while due to the elevation in of my liver function tests (I also have gallstones). The doctors do monitor your liver function levels whilst taking this.

Yes I have read all the side effects, they is a lot to consider, i suffer with diverticulitis, so I'm wondering if it will upset that, to be honest I dare not take it.

There are existing threads on this which you might find helpful. You can find them by typing aspergillosis in the search box.

Thanks.

I have read all about it, and I'm not happy at taking this.

There must be another alternative.

Hi Jan ..yes I have been taking Itraconazole for about three years now. I have been able to give up on my heavy oral prednisilone. Down to 2.5 mgs every other day and probably will give that up shortly. So it has definatly helped my lungs.

I still take my ventolin and Fostair daily. But am much much better.

Down side... I have to cut right back on my beer intake , and more seriously I have developed tinnitus, which is probably due to the medication. But , on balance I would rather have this than struggle with my breathing and constant infections. Have adapted to it now and it doesnt worry me too much.

So, my experiance has been good overall. I take 200mgs per day ( half the recomended dose) which works for me.

Best wishes and good luck Gerry Hanrahan
