Singing

Singing is good for the lungs!!

I am very fortunate in that I have two families that have members who had singing as an important part of their life.

My birth family includes an old music hall star called Edmund Payne and also Gareth Malone who is my cousin.

My adoptive parents were both in choirs and sang frequently at the Royal Albert Hall. I was brought up on a diet of classical music, but my Mother did love the Beatles although I could not get her to appreciate Kate Bush. I loved Scott Walker.

During my life I have also had a love of singing, but until recently I could not hold a note at all as my voice started to falter.

And now to the point of this post. My voice is coming back, not completely, but so much better than it has been for several years. How did I do it? I went onto You tube and played Scott Walker songs and sang along with them. My voice has always been quite deep to it was within my range. Over time my voice improved and I could stay in tune better and hold a note longer.

Please try this if you miss singing.

The greyhound is Magpie who belonged to a friend.

I attend a singing for breathing group but also go on you tube and sing to a wide range of artists. My favourite are Ralph Mactell, John Denver and The Houghton Weavers.

I started singing with the Breatheasy group, but found I can't stand the sound of my 'new' voice which is deep and raspy. It sounds awful and I have to sing with the men. Having always been alto/soprano it really offends my ears (and probably the ears of those around me) so I have stopped singing with the group. However, when my husband is out, I have tried a few exercises from YouTube and they do seem to help a bit. If only I didn't have to listen to myself, I would do more! xx Moy

My voice has always been low, but I do understand about the croaking. I can at least stay in tune for most of the time. Some parts are too high for me so I stop at those points so I don't strain what voice I have left. x

I've got an extremely limited range and can't carry a tune anymore. Even singing songs to the grandchildren is out - and we used to enjoy a good old sing song. I think the inhalers have a lot to do with it as it only happened after I changed. Hope you continue to enjoy your singing. xx Moy

Brilliant drawing of Magpie enjoy your singing.😀 xxx Majt

Fantastic drawing x

I can't sing to save myself . I can't draw either. I can appreciate those talents in other people and I'm so thankful to them for the pleasure their talents give me. 👏

I run a singing for lung health group, and it's amazing to hear members' voices develop over time.

I love singing and am in a choir. I joined a couple of years ago and my voice has improved over time. I made a playlist on my phone of all the old songs I liked and I sing along to it. My favourited are Something Stupid by Nancy and Frank Sinatra and Perfect Day by Lou Reed. My husband who's the one with COPD loves listening to music but has never sung . Such a shame.

Keep singing
